Care information

Proper storage helps protect seed quality and maintain germination performance. Seeds should be kept cool, dry, dark and well sealed when not in use.

Everyday Storage

Keep seeds in their original resealable packaging or transfer them to a clean, airtight container. Store them away from direct sunlight, heat, humidity and large temperature fluctuations.

A cool cupboard or other consistently dry location is suitable for seed that will be used regularly.

Refrigeration for Longer Storage

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help extend seed viability, particularly in warm or humid Australian conditions.

Place completely dry seed in a securely sealed, airtight container or moisture-resistant bag before refrigerating. A refrigerator temperature of around 4°C is suitable for long-term seed storage.

Avoid repeatedly taking a large seed container in and out of the refrigerator, as temperature changes can encourage condensation. If you use seed regularly, consider keeping a smaller working quantity at room temperature while leaving the remaining bulk seed sealed and refrigerated.

Important: Allow Chilled Seed to Warm Before Opening

When removing refrigerated seed, leave the container sealed until it has returned to room temperature.

Opening a cold container immediately can allow moisture from the warmer air to condense on the seed. Moisture during storage can reduce seed quality and encourage deterioration.

Keep Seeds Dry

Moisture is one of the main causes of reduced seed storage life. Always use clean, dry hands or utensils when handling seed and reseal the package promptly after use.

For longer-term storage, a suitable food-safe silica gel or desiccant sachet can be placed inside the storage container to help control excess moisture.

Never refrigerate seed while it is damp.

Protect From Heat, Light & Pests

Do not store seeds:

  • In direct sunlight
  • Near ovens, heaters or hot appliances
  • In damp sheds or garages
  • In areas exposed to frequent temperature changes
  • In containers that allow insects or rodents to enter

Airtight containers also provide additional protection against pantry pests.

Seed Viability

Seed longevity varies considerably between species. Even under good storage conditions, germination will gradually decline as seed ages.

For the best results, use older seed first and keep packages labelled with the variety and batch information. If seed has been stored for an extended period, a small germination test can be carried out before sowing or sprouting a larger quantity.

Before Sprouting or Sowing

Inspect stored seed before use. Discard seed showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour, insect infestation or significant deterioration.

Always follow the product-specific How to Grow instructions and Specifications for soaking, growing temperature, seed quantity and harvest information.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Red Kidney Beans – Dried Beans for Cooking

Cook hearty red kidney beans for chilli, rajma, soups, salads, burritos and dips. USA-grown dried kidney beans available in convenient home and bulk sizes across Australia.

Description

Red Kidney Beans for Chilli, Curries, Soups & Everyday Cooking

Keep a versatile pantry staple on hand with our red kidney beans. These dark red beans have a mild, earthy flavour and develop a creamy interior while retaining their distinctive kidney shape when properly cooked. They are particularly well suited to hearty meals, batch cooking and recipes where you want a substantial bean with plenty of texture.

Red kidney beans are used across cuisines around the world and work particularly well in chilli con carne, rajma curry, soups, stews, casseroles, burritos, tacos, nachos, rice dishes and salads.

Dark Red Kidney Beans for Chilli & Rajma

The firm texture of red kidney beans makes them particularly suited to slow-simmered dishes where softer beans may begin to break down. They absorb the flavours of tomatoes, chilli, cumin, garlic, ginger, herbs and spices while maintaining a satisfying bite.

Use them in classic chilli con carne, vegetarian chilli or rajma, the North Indian kidney bean curry traditionally served with rice. They also work well in Mexican-inspired burritos, tacos, enchiladas and loaded nachos.

Mash, Blend or Add to Salads & Bowls

Once thoroughly cooked, kidney beans can be used whole or mashed. Add them to salads, pasta dishes, grain bowls and rice meals, mash them into bean patties or veggie burgers, or blend them with herbs, spices and other ingredients to make savoury dips and spreads.

Cooked beans can also be portioned for meal preparation and refrigerated or frozen for later use.

How to Prepare Dried Red Kidney Beans

Red kidney beans must be soaked and thoroughly cooked before eating. Sort and rinse the dried beans, soak them for approximately 8–12 hours, then discard the soaking water and rinse again.

Cook the soaked beans in fresh water and bring them to a vigorous boil for at least 30 minutes before continuing to cook until completely tender. Raw or undercooked kidney beans naturally contain lectins and should never be eaten.

Refer to the How to Cook Red Kidney Beans tab for the complete preparation method.

Dried Kidney Beans for Cooking – Not Sprouting

This product is supplied specifically as a dried bean for cooking and is not intended for sprouting. Customers looking for beans selected for edible germination should choose a dedicated sprouting product such as Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.

If you regularly cook with dried beans and pulses, you may also like Adzuki Beans, Chickpeas, Green Mung Beans or Large Red Lentils. Each can also be cooked as a versatile pantry pulse, with different flavours and textures suited to curries, soups, stews, salads and other savoury dishes.

How to Cook Red Kidney Beans

Red kidney beans must be thoroughly cooked before eating. Soaking helps hydrate the dried beans and reduces cooking time, but soaked kidney beans still require proper boiling before they are safe to eat.

What You Need

  • Dried red kidney beans
  • A large bowl or container for soaking
  • A large saucepan
  • Clean, drinking-quality water
  • Your preferred herbs, spices and seasonings

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sort and rinse: Check the dry beans and remove any damaged beans, stones or other foreign material. Rinse thoroughly under clean running water.
  2. Soak: Place the beans in a large bowl and cover generously with water. Soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  3. Discard the soaking water: Drain the beans completely and rinse them again with fresh drinking-quality water. Do not use the soaking water for cooking.
  4. Add fresh water: Transfer the soaked beans to a large saucepan and cover generously with fresh water.
  5. Boil thoroughly: Bring the beans to a full, vigorous boil and continue boiling for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Simmer until completely tender: Reduce the heat and continue cooking at a steady simmer until the beans are soft all the way through. Total cooking time will vary, but soaked kidney beans commonly require approximately 60–90 minutes or longer depending on their age and size.
  7. Check the water level: Keep the beans covered with water during cooking and add additional hot water if required.
  8. Check for doneness: A properly cooked kidney bean should be completely tender throughout, with no hard or chalky centre.
  9. Drain and use: Once fully cooked, drain if required and add the beans to your chosen recipe.

Ways to Use Cooked Red Kidney Beans

  • Chilli con carne or vegetarian chilli
  • Rajma curry
  • Soups and stews
  • Tacos, burritos and enchiladas
  • Nachos
  • Rice and bean dishes
  • Salads and grain bowls
  • Pasta dishes and casseroles
  • Bean patties and veggie burgers
  • Mashed beans
  • Savoury dips and spreads

Other OzSprout pulses suitable for cooking include Adzuki Beans, Chickpeas, Green Mung Beans and Large Red Lentils.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always discard the soaking water.
  • Cook the beans in fresh water.
  • Do not eat beans that remain hard or chalky inside.
  • Acidic ingredients such as tomato, vinegar or lemon can slow softening, so they can be added after the beans have begun to become tender.
  • Older dried beans may take considerably longer to soften.
  • Do not rely solely on low-temperature slow cooking for raw dried kidney beans.

Batch Cooking & Storage

Cool cooked kidney beans promptly after cooking.

Transfer them to a clean covered container and refrigerate within approximately 2 hours. Use refrigerated cooked beans within around 3–5 days.

Cooked beans can also be divided into suitable portions and frozen for longer storage.

Important Food Safety

Never eat red kidney beans raw or undercooked.

Red kidney beans naturally contain phytohaemagglutinin, a lectin that can cause illness when beans are eaten raw or inadequately cooked.

Soak the dried beans, discard the soaking water, rinse them, then boil them vigorously in fresh water for at least 30 minutes before continuing to cook until completely tender.

Do not cook raw dried kidney beans solely in a slow cooker at low temperature. If using a slow cooker recipe, soak and thoroughly boil the beans on the stovetop first before transferring them to the slow cooker.
