Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Large Red Lentil Sprouting Seeds – Persian

Grow crisp red lentil sprouts at home with Australian-grown whole lentils. Also suitable for cooking, microgreens and milling into lentil flour, with bulk sizes available Australia-wide.

Description

Red Lentil Sprouting Seeds for Quick, Crunchy Sprouts

Grow fresh, substantial sprouts at home with our red lentil sprouting seeds. These whole Persian red lentils retain the seed structures required for germination and produce crisp young sprouts with a mild, earthy and slightly nutty flavour. They are generally ready to harvest in approximately 3–6 days.

Red lentils are straightforward to grow indoors using a Glass Sprouting Jar or another suitable sprouter. Unlike the split or dehulled red lentils commonly sold for cooking, these are whole viable lentils suitable for sprouting.

Whole Red Lentils for Sprouting

Whole red lentil sprouts have a firm, crunchy texture and more substance than delicate leafy sprouts such as alfalfa or clover. Their mild savoury flavour works well in salads, wraps, grain bowls, stir-fries, soups and other savoury meals.

They can also be combined after harvest with other sprouted lentils, beans or peas. Growing different varieties separately is generally preferable when their soaking times and harvest periods differ.

Designed for Jar-Grown Red Lentil Sprouts

This listing is specifically focused on growing short red lentil sprouts in a jar or sprouter. The lentils are soaked first, then rinsed and thoroughly drained several times each day while the roots develop.

Shorter sprouts generally provide the firmest texture. Harvest according to your preferred root length while the sprouts remain fresh, crisp and pleasant in flavour.

Cook Whole Persian Red Lentils

These whole lentils do not need to be sprouted before use. They are also a versatile dried pulse for cooking, with a firmer texture than split red lentils and a greater ability to retain their shape after cooking.

Use cooked whole red lentils in dhal, curries, soups, stews, casseroles, salads, grain bowls and savoury fillings. They can also be mashed or blended into dips, spreads, lentil patties and other pulse-based recipes.

Whole red lentils generally do not require overnight soaking for conventional cooking. Rinse thoroughly and simmer in fresh water until completely tender, typically around 20–40 minutes depending on the lentils and your preferred texture.

Other Uses for Whole Red Lentils

The same viable seed can also be grown for longer in trays to produce lentil microgreens, although that method differs from the jar-sprouting instructions provided on this page.

Dry whole lentils can also be milled using suitable equipment to produce lentil flour for flatbreads, savoury batters, crackers and other cooking and baking applications.

How to Grow Red Lentil Sprouts

Whole red lentils can be sprouted indoors throughout the year. Unlike split or dehulled red lentils, whole viable lentils retain the seed structures required for germination.

If you are new to jar sprouting, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for an overview of the general method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 3 tablespoons / around 35g of whole red lentils
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 3 tablespoons of whole red lentils to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged or broken seeds.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse thoroughly, then cover generously with clean drinking-quality water. Soak for approximately 10–12 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse the lentils again and drain completely.
  5. Position for drainage: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess moisture can escape and air can circulate.
  6. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times each day.
  7. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. A growing temperature of approximately 18–23°C is suitable.
  8. Watch for germination: Small white roots will emerge first and continue developing over the following days.
  9. Harvest: Red lentil sprouts are generally ready in approximately 3–6 days. Harvest earlier for shorter, firmer sprouts or allow them to develop further according to your preferred texture.

Tips for Best Results

  • Only whole viable lentils will sprout; split or dehulled red lentils will not germinate.
  • Do not overcrowd the jar.
  • Maintain thorough drainage between rinses.
  • Do not leave the developing sprouts sitting in standing water.
  • Maintain good airflow throughout the growing period.
  • Shorter sprouts generally have the firmest, crunchiest texture.
  • Grow varieties with substantially different soaking or harvest times separately and combine them after harvest.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop a sour, rotten or unusually musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
