Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Adzuki Bean Sprouting Seeds

Grow crisp, sweet-nutty adzuki bean sprouts in 3–6 days with Australian-grown Ruby adzuki bean sprouting seeds and 90% current germination. Available in home and bulk sizes.

Description

Australian Adzuki Bean Sprouting Seeds for Sprouting & Cooking

Grow crisp, substantial sprouts or cook them as a versatile pantry pulse with our Australian adzuki bean sprouting seeds. Australian-grown adzuki beans have a distinctive red colour and a mild, naturally sweet and nutty flavour, making them suitable for both home sprouting and everyday cooking.

For sprouting, adzuki beans produce firm, crunchy sprouts with more substance than delicate leafy varieties such as alfalfa or clover. They can be grown indoors using a Glass Sprouting Jar or purpose-built sprouter and are generally ready to harvest in approximately 3–6 days.

OzSprout's current Ruby variety is grown in Australia and has a listed germination rate of 90%. Current batch, origin and growing specifications are available in the Specifications tab.

Sweet, Crunchy Adzuki Bean Sprouts

Fresh adzuki bean sprouts have a firm, crunchy texture with a mild, sweet and slightly nutty flavour. Their substantial texture works particularly well in stir-fries, soups, noodle dishes, curries, grain bowls and other cooked meals.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts. Refer to the How to Grow Adzuki Bean Sprouts tab for soaking, rinsing, harvesting, storage and food-safety guidance.

Cook Whole Adzuki Beans

Adzuki beans do not need to be sprouted before use. The dried beans can also be soaked and cooked until tender for soups, stews, curries, rice dishes and other savoury recipes.

Their naturally mild sweetness also makes cooked adzuki beans suitable for traditional red bean preparations. Once thoroughly cooked, they can be mashed or blended for red bean paste used in buns, desserts and other Asian-style dishes.

Australian-Grown Ruby Adzuki Beans

The current Ruby variety is Australian grown. The beans absorb considerable water during soaking and expand further as they germinate, so sufficient room, thorough drainage and good airflow are important during sprouting.

If you enjoy larger legume sprouts, you may also like Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds or Chickpea Sprouting Seeds, both of which can also be used for sprouting and cooking.

Home & Bulk Adzuki Bean Seeds Australia

OzSprout adzuki bean seeds are available from 500g through to 20kg bulk quantities, making them suitable for home sprouters, regular cooks, retailers, resellers and commercial users across Australia.

How to Grow Adzuki Bean Sprouts

Adzuki bean sprouts can be grown indoors throughout the year using a clean Glass Sprouting Jar or purpose-built sprouter. Because the beans expand considerably during soaking and germination, leave sufficient room in the jar and pay particular attention to thorough drainage.

If you are new to jar sprouting, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for an overview of the general method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 5 tablespoons of adzuki bean sprouting seed for a 500ml jar
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or purpose-built sprouter
  • A sprouting lid, mesh screen or suitable draining cover
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and any utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 5 tablespoons of dry adzuki beans to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged or deteriorated beans.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse the beans thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water, then cover generously with fresh water and soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Empty the soaking water, rinse the beans again and drain completely. Position the jar at a downward angle so excess water can escape while air circulates.
  5. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times each day. Additional rinsing may be useful during warmer conditions, but do not leave standing water in the jar.
  6. Allow the sprouts to develop: Keep the jar in a dark or low-light, well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. Continue rinsing and draining regularly as the beans soften, split and begin producing shoots.
  7. Harvest: Adzuki sprouts are generally ready in approximately 3–6 days. Harvest when the beans have softened and split and short, crisp shoots have developed. Remove any hard, unsprouted or damaged beans before use.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not overcrowd the jar. Adzuki beans expand considerably during soaking and germination.
  • Keep the jar positioned at a draining angle between rinses.
  • Thorough drainage is particularly important with larger beans.
  • Keep the developing sprouts away from strong light; deliberate greening is not necessary for adzuki sprouts.
  • Harvest while the sprouts remain crisp rather than allowing the shoots to become excessively long or chewy.
  • Discard the batch if the sprouts become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop an unusual sour, rotten or strongly musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Remove any hard, unsprouted or damaged beans, transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard the sprouts if their smell, colour or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria, and careful home-growing practices cannot guarantee that sprouts will be bacteria-free.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, rinse regularly, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with sprouts.

Adzuki sprouts are well suited to cooked dishes such as stir-fries, soups, curries and noodle dishes.

For another substantial bean sprout, see Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.

Taking ages to sprout

Hi Richard, the adzuki do take a little longer than other sprouts. They do germinate very well though. They are a little different to other sprouts in that they soften just before sprouting fully. I think they taste best at that stage (5 days) just before the sprouts fully emerge . To move them along faster, soak in hot (not boiling) water for 12 hours and rinse and drain with warm water 3 times a day.
