Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Chickpea Sprouting Seeds

Grow crunchy chickpea sprouts in 3–6 days with Australian-grown chickpea sprouting seeds and current 90–91% germination. Available in convenient home and bulk sizes.

Description

Australian Chickpea Sprouting Seeds for Sprouting & Cooking

Grow substantial, crunchy sprouts or cook them as a versatile pantry pulse with our Australian chickpea sprouting seeds. Chickpeas have a mild, earthy and nutty flavour and are suitable for both home sprouting and everyday cooking.

For sprouting, chickpeas produce thick, satisfying shoots with more substance than delicate leafy sprouts. They can be grown indoors using a Glass Sprouting Jar or purpose-built sprouter and are generally ready to harvest in approximately 3–6 days.

OzSprout's current Kabuli variety is grown in Australia and has a listed germination rate of 90%. Current batch, origin and growing specifications are available in the Specifications tab.

Crunchy, Nutty Chickpea Sprouts

Chickpea sprouts have a firm, crisp texture with a mild, nutty flavour. Their larger size makes them particularly useful when you want a substantial sprout for cooked meals rather than a light leafy garnish.

After sprouting, chickpeas can be thoroughly cooked and added to stir-fries, curries, soups, stews and other savoury dishes. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.

Cook Chickpeas as a Versatile Pantry Pulse

These chickpeas do not need to be sprouted before use. The dry beans can also be soaked and cooked until tender for use in curries, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, soups, casseroles, salads and savoury bowls.

Their creamy texture when cooked also makes chickpeas particularly well suited to homemade hummus, dips and other blended preparations.

Best Grown Separately From Smaller Sprouting Seeds

Chickpeas can be enjoyed alongside sprouted lentils, peas and other legumes, but their large size and longer soaking requirements mean they are generally easier to grow in their own jar. Growing different varieties separately allows each crop to receive the appropriate soaking, rinsing and harvest time.

If you enjoy substantial legume sprouts, you may also like Adzuki Bean Sprouting Seeds or Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.

Home & Bulk Chickpea Seeds Australia

OzSprout chickpea seeds are available from 500g through to 20kg bulk quantities, making them suitable for home sprouters, regular cooks, retailers, resellers and commercial users across Australia.

How to Grow Chickpea Sprouts

Chickpeas are large sprouting seeds that expand considerably during soaking and produce thick, crunchy sprouts. They can be grown indoors throughout the year using a clean Glass Sprouting Jar or purpose-built sprouter.

Because chickpeas expand substantially, leave enough room in the jar and pay particular attention to thorough drainage. If you are new to jar sprouting, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for an overview of the general method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 5 tablespoons of chickpea sprouting seed for a 500ml jar
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or purpose-built sprouter
  • A sprouting lid, mesh screen or suitable draining cover
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and any utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 5 tablespoons of dry chickpeas to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged or deteriorated beans.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse the chickpeas thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water, then cover generously with fresh water and soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Empty the soaking water, rinse the chickpeas again and drain completely. Position the jar at a downward angle so excess water can escape while air continues to circulate.
  5. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the chickpeas approximately 2–3 times each day. Avoid leaving standing water in the jar.
  6. Allow the sprouts to develop: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. Continue rinsing and draining regularly as the root tips emerge.
  7. Give them room: Chickpeas expand considerably during germination. If the jar becomes tightly packed, use less seed in your next batch rather than compressing the developing sprouts.
  8. Harvest: Chickpea sprouts are generally ready after approximately 3–6 days. Harvest when the beans have softened and short, crisp shoots have developed. Remove any hard, unsprouted or damaged chickpeas before use.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not overcrowd the jar; chickpeas swell considerably during soaking and germination.
  • Keep the jar tilted between rinses so excess water can continue to drain.
  • Large legumes can retain moisture between individual beans, making thorough drainage particularly important.
  • Maintain good airflow, especially during warm or humid conditions.
  • Keep the jar away from hot direct sunlight.
  • Grow chickpeas separately from smaller sprouting seeds that require different soaking and harvest times.
  • Discard the batch if the sprouts become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop an unusual sour, rotten or strongly musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Remove any hard, unsprouted or damaged chickpeas, transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard the sprouts if their smell, colour or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria, and careful home-growing practices cannot guarantee that sprouts will be bacteria-free.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts. Chickpea sprouts are particularly well suited to cooked dishes such as curries, soups, stews and stir-fries.

For another substantial bean sprout, see Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.

I just soak my chickpeas overnight and leave it for half a day and cook it. I tried before lots of time cannot get it to sprout.

This last batch, I'm happy with. They're sprouting like my previous batches except for the last batch which seemed to stay soggy and not sprout as they should.

I had trouble with the first batch and reached out to the company. The support was exceptional and they confirmed they had subsequently found a problem with the batch, gave me targetted instructions on how to sprout chickpeas generally, and took the trouble also to send me a total replacement from the new batch! Excellent customer service, knowing that problems do happen. Thanks guys, great to see customer service still being upheld; also the second batch worked a treat.

Hi Carla, you were absolutely right about that batch of chickpeas, thank you for bringing it to our attention, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience. The good news is we’ve received a fresh batch, and we'll be sending them out this week.
