Care information

Proper storage helps protect seed quality and maintain germination performance. Seeds should be kept cool, dry, dark and well sealed when not in use.

Everyday Storage

Keep seeds in their original resealable packaging or transfer them to a clean, airtight container. Store them away from direct sunlight, heat, humidity and large temperature fluctuations.

A cool cupboard or other consistently dry location is suitable for seed that will be used regularly.

Refrigeration for Longer Storage

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help extend seed viability, particularly in warm or humid Australian conditions.

Place completely dry seed in a securely sealed, airtight container or moisture-resistant bag before refrigerating. A refrigerator temperature of around 4°C is suitable for long-term seed storage.

Avoid repeatedly taking a large seed container in and out of the refrigerator, as temperature changes can encourage condensation. If you use seed regularly, consider keeping a smaller working quantity at room temperature while leaving the remaining bulk seed sealed and refrigerated.

Important: Allow Chilled Seed to Warm Before Opening

When removing refrigerated seed, leave the container sealed until it has returned to room temperature.

Opening a cold container immediately can allow moisture from the warmer air to condense on the seed. Moisture during storage can reduce seed quality and encourage deterioration.

Keep Seeds Dry

Moisture is one of the main causes of reduced seed storage life. Always use clean, dry hands or utensils when handling seed and reseal the package promptly after use.

For longer-term storage, a suitable food-safe silica gel or desiccant sachet can be placed inside the storage container to help control excess moisture.

Never refrigerate seed while it is damp.

Protect From Heat, Light & Pests

Do not store seeds:

  • In direct sunlight
  • Near ovens, heaters or hot appliances
  • In damp sheds or garages
  • In areas exposed to frequent temperature changes
  • In containers that allow insects or rodents to enter

Airtight containers also provide additional protection against pantry pests.

Seed Viability

Seed longevity varies considerably between species. Even under good storage conditions, germination will gradually decline as seed ages.

For the best results, use older seed first and keep packages labelled with the variety and batch information. If seed has been stored for an extended period, a small germination test can be carried out before sowing or sprouting a larger quantity.

Before Sprouting or Sowing

Inspect stored seed before use. Discard seed showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour, insect infestation or significant deterioration.

Always follow the product-specific How to Grow instructions and Specifications for soaking, growing temperature, seed quantity and harvest information.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Black Turtle Beans – Dried Black Beans

Cook rich, creamy black turtle beans for chilli, soups, burritos, tacos, salads and dips. Versatile dried black beans available in home and bulk sizes across Australia.

Description

Black Turtle Beans – Dried Black Beans for Cooking

Black turtle beans, also widely known as black beans, are a versatile dried pulse with a rich, earthy flavour and creamy interior. They hold their shape well when cooked, making them a useful pantry staple for soups, stews, chilli, Mexican and Latin American-style meals, rice dishes and everyday cooking.

Unlike OzSprout products specifically selected for germination, these black turtle beans are supplied for cooking and culinary use. They can be cooked whole, mashed, puréed or blended for a wide variety of savoury dishes.

Rich, Earthy Black Beans for Everyday Cooking

Cooked black turtle beans develop a tender, creamy centre while retaining enough structure for dishes where you want the beans to remain intact. Their mild, earthy and slightly sweet flavour pairs particularly well with chilli, cumin, garlic, tomato, lime and fresh herbs.

Use cooked black beans in chilli, tacos, burritos, nachos, enchiladas, soups, casseroles, rice dishes, grain bowls and salads. They can also be mashed for refried-style beans, shaped into bean patties or veggie burgers, or blended into savoury dips and spreads.

How to Prepare Dried Black Turtle Beans

For conventional stovetop cooking, sort and rinse the dried beans before soaking them for approximately 8–12 hours. Drain and discard the soaking water, rinse again and cook thoroughly in fresh water until completely tender.

Black turtle beans naturally contain lectins, so they should not be eaten raw or undercooked. Bring soaked beans to a vigorous boil before reducing the heat and continuing to cook until tender. Refer to the How to Cook Black Turtle Beans tab for the complete method.

Cooking Beans – Not for Sprouting

This product is sold as a dried cooking bean and is not intended for sprouting. Customers looking for beans specifically selected for edible germination should choose a dedicated sprouting product such as Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.

If you regularly cook with dried beans and pulses, you may also like Adzuki Beans, Chickpeas or Large Red Lentils. Each can also be cooked as a versatile pantry pulse, with different flavours and textures suited to curries, soups, stews, salads, grain bowls and other savoury dishes.

How to Cook Black Turtle Beans

Black turtle beans should be thoroughly cooked before eating. Soaking first helps the beans hydrate more evenly and generally reduces the time required to cook them until completely tender.

What You Need

  • Dried black turtle beans
  • A large bowl or container for soaking
  • A large saucepan with room for the beans to expand
  • Fresh drinking-quality water
  • Your preferred herbs, spices and seasonings

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sort and rinse: Check the dry beans and remove any damaged beans, stones or other foreign material. Rinse thoroughly under clean running water.
  2. Soak: Place the beans in a large bowl and cover generously with water. Soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  3. Drain and rinse: Discard the soaking water and rinse the beans thoroughly with fresh drinking-quality water.
  4. Add fresh water: Transfer the soaked beans to a large saucepan and cover generously with fresh water. Leave plenty of room because the beans will continue to expand during cooking.
  5. Boil thoroughly: Bring the beans to a vigorous rolling boil and continue boiling for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Simmer until completely tender: Reduce the heat and continue cooking at a steady simmer until the beans are soft all the way through. Total cooking time after soaking is commonly around 60–90 minutes, although older beans can take longer.
  7. Check the water level: Keep the beans covered with water during cooking and add additional hot water if required.
  8. Check for doneness: A fully cooked bean should be tender throughout without a hard, gritty or chalky centre.
  9. Drain and use: Once completely tender, drain the beans if required and use them in your chosen recipe.

Tips for Best Results

  • Soaking for 8–12 hours generally promotes more even cooking.
  • Always discard the soaking water and cook the beans in fresh water.
  • Do not eat black turtle beans raw or undercooked.
  • Add acidic ingredients such as tomato, vinegar, lemon or lime after the beans have begun to soften, as acidic ingredients can slow softening.
  • Cooking time varies with the age and moisture content of the dried beans.
  • Do not rely on low-temperature slow cooking alone for raw dried black turtle beans. Boil the soaked beans thoroughly on the stovetop first before transferring them to a slow cooker.

Ways to Use Cooked Black Turtle Beans

  • Chilli and bean stews
  • Tacos, burritos and enchiladas
  • Nachos and Mexican-style bowls
  • Black bean soup
  • Rice and bean dishes
  • Salads and grain bowls
  • Casseroles
  • Mashed or refried-style beans
  • Bean patties and veggie burgers
  • Puréed dips and spreads

Storage After Cooking

Cool cooked beans promptly and transfer them to a clean, covered container.

Refrigerate cooked beans within approximately 2 hours and use within around 3–5 days. Suitable portions can also be frozen for longer storage.

Food Safety

Do not eat black turtle beans raw or undercooked.

Black turtle beans belong to the common bean group and naturally contain lectins that are substantially reduced by adequate moist-heat cooking. Soak the dried beans, discard the soaking water, cook them in fresh water and boil thoroughly before reducing the heat.

Beans should be completely tender before eating. If using a slow cooker, boil the soaked beans thoroughly on the stovetop first rather than relying on the lower slow-cooker temperature alone.

If you are looking for beans specifically suitable for edible sprouting, see Green Mung Bean Sprouting Seeds.
