Wheatgrass Grow Kit 3 contains the seed, growing medium, reusable tray system, paper liners and liquid fertiliser needed for repeated wheatgrass crops.

You Will Also Need

• Clean drinking-quality water
• A bowl, jar or container for soaking the wheat
• A suitable container for hydrating coco fibre
• Clean scissors or a sharp knife for harvesting

Seed Quantity

Use approximately 150–200g of dry wheatgrass seed per grow tray as a practical starting rate.

Adjust slightly according to seed size, growing conditions and your preferred crop density.

Aim for dense, even coverage without creating thick overlapping piles, as excessive density can reduce airflow around the developing crop.

Step 1 – Rinse & Soak

1. Measure approximately 150–200g of wheatgrass seed.
2. Rinse thoroughly with clean, cool drinking-quality water.
3. Cover generously with fresh water.
4. Soak for approximately 6–12 hours.
5. In warmer conditions, the shorter end of the range is generally sufficient.
6. In cooler conditions, a longer soak may be appropriate.
7. Drain thoroughly after soaking.

Step 2 – Pre-Germinate

1. Leave the drained wheat in a clean container.
2. Keep the seed moist while allowing excess water to drain.
3. Rinse and drain as required during this stage.
4. Allow approximately 12–24 hours for small white roots to begin emerging.
5. Sow while the roots are still short and easy to spread.

Step 3 – Hydrate the Coco Fibre

The supplied coco fibre is compressed and must be hydrated before use.

1. Break off or separate only the amount required for the crop.
2. Place the compressed fibre in a sufficiently large container.
3. Add clean water gradually.
4. Allow the fibre time to absorb the water and expand.
5. Separate and fluff the hydrated coco fibre.
6. Drain or squeeze away excessive free water if necessary.

The coco fibre should be evenly moist but not dripping wet before it is added to the grow tray.

Step 4 – Prepare the Grow Tray

1. Start with a clean drainable grow tray.
2. Place one paper liner flat across the bottom.
3. Add approximately 1–2cm of hydrated coco fibre.
4. Level the growing medium gently without compacting it heavily.
5. Place the drainable grow tray inside the matching solid drip tray.

Step 5 – Sow the Wheat

1. Spread the pre-germinated wheat evenly across the coco fibre.
2. Aim for dense coverage without excessive overlapping.
3. Water sufficiently to settle the seed and growing medium.
4. Allow excess water to drain through the upper tray into the drip tray below.
5. Empty excessive standing water where necessary.

Step 6 – Cover During Germination

1. Place a second paper liner directly over the freshly sown wheat.
2. Mist the paper until evenly damp.
3. Keep the paper and seed moist during approximately the first 48 hours.
4. Check regularly and do not allow the upper paper to dry completely.
5. Remove the sheet once the young shoots reach approximately 1–2cm and begin lifting it.

Step 7 – Light & Watering

Once the upper covering has been removed:

• Move the tray into bright indirect light.
• Maintain good airflow around the crop.
• Keep the coco fibre evenly moist without waterlogging it.
• Avoid prolonged hot direct sunlight.
• Once a healthy root mat develops, begin bottom watering through the solid drip tray.

Bottom Watering

To bottom-water established wheatgrass:

1. Lift the drainable grow tray briefly.
2. Add a moderate amount of clean water to the solid drip tray.
3. Replace the upper tray.
4. Allow the roots and coco fibre to absorb moisture through the drainage openings.
5. Check moisture regularly.
6. Add more water only when required.

Avoid leaving the crop continuously sitting in excessive water.

Step 8 – Optional Fertiliser

Supplementary fertiliser is optional.

If using the supplied liquid fertiliser:

1. Follow the dilution and application directions on the fertiliser label.
2. Do not exceed the recommended concentration.
3. Apply only when appropriate for the crop and growing conditions.
4. Never apply concentrated fertiliser directly to young wheatgrass.

Step 9 – Harvest

Wheatgrass is generally ready to harvest approximately 7–10 days after sowing, depending on temperature, light and other growing conditions.

The crop will typically have developed dense, upright green blades by this stage.

To harvest:

1. Use clean scissors or a sharp knife.
2. Cut the wheatgrass just above the growing medium.
3. Avoid cutting into the coco fibre or root mat.
4. Wash the harvested wheatgrass thoroughly under cool running drinking-quality water.
5. Use promptly after harvesting.

Staggering Two Crops

The two-tray system allows you to maintain overlapping wheatgrass crops.

For example:

1. Start the first tray normally.
2. Begin the second tray several days later.
3. Harvest the first crop when ready.
4. Clean and prepare that tray for another crop.
5. Continue rotating the trays as required.

This can provide a more regular supply than starting both trays at the same time.

Cleaning Between Crops

After harvest:

1. Remove the wheatgrass root mat.
2. Dispose of the used coco fibre and paper liner.
3. Empty the drip tray.
4. Wash both trays thoroughly.
5. Rinse with clean water.
6. Allow all components to dry completely.
7. Use fresh coco fibre and a new paper liner for the next crop.
