Care information

Proper cleaning, drying and storage will help keep your sprouting equipment hygienic and in good working condition. Always follow any product-specific care instructions supplied with the item.

Cleaning: Wash reusable jars, trays, lids, screens and other growing components thoroughly before first use and after every crop. Use warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse well with clean water.

Sanitising: Equipment used for growing edible sprouts or microgreens should be sanitised regularly using a suitable food-contact sanitising method that is compatible with the product material. Rinse where required by the sanitiser instructions.

Drying: Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling or storing. Trapped moisture can encourage mould, odours and microbial growth.

During Growing: Keep drainage holes, mesh screens and ventilation areas clear so water can drain freely and air can circulate around the crop. Remove seed residue and organic matter between growing cycles.

Handling: Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals or excessive force that may scratch, warp or damage plastic, glass, mesh or other components. Do not expose equipment to high heat unless the product is specifically rated for it.

Inspection: Check reusable equipment regularly for cracks, chips, damaged screens, worn seals or other deterioration. Replace damaged components that can no longer be cleaned effectively or used safely.

Storage: Store clean, completely dry equipment in a dry, well-ventilated area away from excessive heat, direct sunlight and contamination.

Best Care: Product materials and cleaning requirements can vary, so follow any specific washing, dishwasher, temperature or maintenance instructions shown on the product packaging or product page.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Coco Fibre Growing Medium – 2kg & 5kg Coir Blocks

Compressed coco fibre growing medium for wheatgrass, microgreens, seed raising, propagation and container growing. Lightweight, moisture-retentive coir expands substantially when hydrated and stores compactly between uses.

Description

Compressed Coco Fibre Growing Medium

Our Coco Fibre Growing Medium is a compact, plant-based growing substrate made from compressed and dehydrated coconut husk fibre. Also known as coco coir or coco peat, it expands into a light, fibrous medium when water is added, making it suitable for wheatgrass, microgreens, seedlings, propagation and container growing.

Available in 2kg and 5kg compressed blocks, coco fibre takes up considerably less storage space before hydration than loose growing media. Break off only what you need for smaller crops or hydrate a complete block when preparing multiple trays or containers.

Ideal for Wheatgrass & Microgreens

Coco fibre works particularly well in shallow growing trays for wheatgrass, sunflower microgreens, pea shoots and many other tray-grown crops. Its fine, fibrous structure helps hold moisture around developing roots while maintaining air spaces within the growing medium.

Pair it with a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray for a practical tray-growing setup.

For wheatgrass growing, see our How to Grow Wheatgrass: Step-by-Step Guide.

Suitable for Seed Raising, Pots & Propagation

Beyond microgreens, hydrated coco fibre can be used for seed raising, propagation, pots and containers, or incorporated into potting and garden-media blends.

Where additional moisture retention is useful, coco fibre can also be blended with Vermiculite Growing Medium to create a lightweight growing mix suited to selected propagation, seed-raising and tray-growing applications.

Coco fibre is primarily a growing medium rather than a complete fertiliser. Longer-term crops may therefore require an appropriate fertiliser or nutrient program according to the needs of the plant being grown.

Compact Block Expands with Water

The 2kg compressed block is specified to expand to approximately 35 litres after hydration with around 10 litres of water. Use a container with a capacity of at least approximately 40 litres to provide adequate room for expansion.

Add water gradually, allow the fibre to expand, then separate and fluff the hydrated coir before use. The finished medium should be evenly moist without excessive free-standing water.

The 5kg block should also be hydrated in a suitably large container. Because expansion and water requirements can vary, add water progressively until the fibre is fully expanded and evenly hydrated rather than relying on a fixed volume.

Use Only What You Need

You do not need to hydrate an entire block for a small crop. Dry coco fibre can be separated into smaller portions, allowing you to prepare only the quantity needed for one or two trays or containers.

Keep unused compressed coco fibre dry and protected from moisture until required.

How to Prepare & Use Coco Fibre

Compressed coco fibre must be hydrated before use. It expands considerably when water is added, so always use a container substantially larger than the dry block.

Hydrating a 2kg Block

  1. Choose a large container: Use a clean tub or container with a capacity of at least approximately 40 litres.
  2. Add the block: Place the compressed 2kg coco fibre block inside.
  3. Add water gradually: Pour approximately 10 litres of clean water over and around the block.
  4. Allow it to expand: Give the fibre time to absorb the water and loosen naturally.
  5. Separate compressed sections: As the block softens, gently break apart remaining compressed areas by hand or with a clean tool.
  6. Fluff the fibre: Mix and loosen the hydrated coco until the texture is even.
  7. Check moisture: The finished medium should be evenly moist rather than saturated.
  8. Remove excess water: Drain away excessive free-standing water before filling trays or containers.

A 2kg block is specified to produce approximately 35 litres of hydrated coco fibre.

Hydrating Part of a Block

You do not need to hydrate the whole block at once.

  1. Separate the amount required while the coco fibre is dry.
  2. Place it in an appropriately sized container.
  3. Add clean water gradually.
  4. Allow the fibre to absorb the water and expand.
  5. Add more water only if compressed dry sections remain.
  6. Separate and fluff the fibre thoroughly.
  7. Remove excessive free water before use.

This method is particularly useful when preparing only one or two wheatgrass or microgreen trays.

Hydrating a 5kg Block

The 5kg block requires a substantially larger container.

  1. Place the block in a clean container with ample room for expansion.
  2. Add water progressively rather than all at once.
  3. Allow the block time to absorb the water and soften.
  4. Break apart compressed sections as they loosen.
  5. Continue adding water only as required.
  6. Fluff thoroughly once fully expanded.
  7. Remove excessive free water before use.

Do not assume the water requirement for the 2kg block scales exactly to the 5kg block.

Using Coco Fibre for Wheatgrass

  1. Prepare a clean drainable grow tray.
  2. Add a paper liner across the base where required.
  3. Add approximately 1–2cm of hydrated coco fibre.
  4. Level the surface gently without heavily compacting it.
  5. Spread prepared wheatgrass seed evenly across the medium.
  6. Maintain appropriate moisture during germination.
  7. Once the root mat is established, bottom-water where practical.
  8. Harvest according to the wheatgrass growing method.

Using Coco Fibre for Microgreens

For microgreens:

  1. Add hydrated coco fibre to the grow tray at the depth appropriate for the crop.
  2. Level the surface without compacting it heavily.
  3. Sow at the crop-specific seeding rate.
  4. Follow the required germination or blackout method.
  5. Keep the medium evenly moist without waterlogging it.
  6. Move the crop into suitable light once germination is complete.
  7. Bottom-water established crops where appropriate.
  8. Harvest at the correct stage for the variety being grown.

Other Uses

Hydrated coco fibre can also be used for:

  • Seed raising
  • Propagation
  • Pots and containers
  • Potting-medium blends
  • Wheatgrass
  • Barley grass
  • Microgreens
  • Selected soil-conditioning blends

Fertilising

Coco fibre is primarily a growing medium rather than a complete source of plant nutrition.

Short-duration crops such as many microgreens and wheatgrass may have relatively modest nutrient requirements, depending on the seed and growing method.

Longer-term plants generally require an appropriate fertiliser or nutrient program.

Always follow the directions for the specific fertiliser being used rather than applying nutrients at an arbitrary concentration.

Storage

Keep unused compressed coco fibre:

  • dry;
  • clean;
  • protected from rain and moisture;
  • away from contamination; and
  • stored in a suitable dry location until required.

Hydrated coco fibre should ideally be used promptly rather than stored wet for extended periods.
