Choose the right setup for your crop and learn how to care for your jars, trays and growing equipment.
Should I choose a sprouting jar or a growing tray?
Choose a jar for suitable jar-grown sprouts such as alfalfa or broccoli. Choose a tray for microgreens, pea shoots or wheatgrass grown on a medium. The seed’s growing instructions should guide your equipment choice.
What is included in the Sprouting Starter Kit?
The kit listing includes two reusable glass sprouting jars, six seed varieties and instructions. The varieties listed are broccoli, alfalfa, Sango radish, chickpeas, red lentils and blue field peas. Check the current kit listing before ordering.
What is the difference between Box 1 and Box 2?
Both starter-kit options include two jars and six seed varieties. Box 2 contains approximately twice the total seed quantity of Box 1. Choose according to how often you expect to grow and check the current pack details.
What else do I need with a sprouting kit?
You need drinking-quality water, a suitable place for drainage and a clean container for refrigerated harvests. Follow each seed’s instructions. A jar kit does not require soil for the included jar-sprouting method.
Can I reuse the jars and trays?
Yes, reusable equipment is designed for repeated crops. Remove old roots and seed residue, clean it thoroughly and let it dry between uses. Replace cracked or damaged components that cannot be cleaned or used safely.
What is the difference between a grow tray and a drip tray?
The grow tray holds the crop and has drainage openings. The solid drip tray sits underneath to catch runoff and support bottom watering. Our matching trays are sold separately unless a kit says otherwise. See the grow tray and drip tray.
Do I need soil or growing medium?
Jar sprouts do not need soil. Tray-grown microgreens and wheatgrass need a suitable medium or a system designed for their roots. Check whether your chosen kit includes growing medium; it is not included with every tray or kit.
How do I clean and sanitise my equipment?
Remove crop residue, wash with warm water and mild detergent, and rinse. Use a food-contact sanitising method compatible with the equipment, following its label and any required rinse instructions. Let components dry before storage. Cleaning and sanitising are separate steps.
Is the sprouting jar dishwasher-safe?
The current 650ml glass jar listing specifies that its jar and sieve lid are dishwasher-safe to approximately 85°C. Check the instructions supplied with your item. Do not assume that all trays, lids or other products have the same heat tolerance.
Why is my sprouting jar not draining properly?
Check that seed hulls are not blocking the sieve and that the jar is resting at its draining angle. Avoid overcrowding. Seeds that form a gel, such as cress, need an appropriate tray method rather than this style of draining jar.
Can I buy more seeds without buying another kit?
Yes. Choose replacement varieties from our Sprouting Seeds or Microgreen Seeds collection. Match the seed to your equipment and intended growing method.
Can I buy replacement lids or use parts from another brand?
Availability and fit depend on the item. Before ordering a replacement, contact OzSprout with the product name and a photo or measurements. Third-party lid compatibility is not specified for our 650ml jar, so check before buying.
