Care information

Proper cleaning, drying and storage will help keep your sprouting equipment hygienic and in good working condition. Always follow any product-specific care instructions supplied with the item.

Cleaning: Wash reusable jars, trays, lids, screens and other growing components thoroughly before first use and after every crop. Use warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse well with clean water.

Sanitising: Equipment used for growing edible sprouts or microgreens should be sanitised regularly using a suitable food-contact sanitising method that is compatible with the product material. Rinse where required by the sanitiser instructions.

Drying: Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling or storing. Trapped moisture can encourage mould, odours and microbial growth.

During Growing: Keep drainage holes, mesh screens and ventilation areas clear so water can drain freely and air can circulate around the crop. Remove seed residue and organic matter between growing cycles.

Handling: Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals or excessive force that may scratch, warp or damage plastic, glass, mesh or other components. Do not expose equipment to high heat unless the product is specifically rated for it.

Inspection: Check reusable equipment regularly for cracks, chips, damaged screens, worn seals or other deterioration. Replace damaged components that can no longer be cleaned effectively or used safely.

Storage: Store clean, completely dry equipment in a dry, well-ventilated area away from excessive heat, direct sunlight and contamination.

Best Care: Product materials and cleaning requirements can vary, so follow any specific washing, dishwasher, temperature or maintenance instructions shown on the product packaging or product page.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Vermiculite Growing Medium & Soil Conditioner

Vermiculite is a lightweight mineral growing medium used for seed raising, propagation, potting mixes, microgreens and improving moisture retention in growing media. The mineral is expanded using heat to create porous granules that absorb water while still maintaining air spaces around developing roots.

Available in 15L and 30L bags, OzSprout vermiculite can be used on its own for selected germination applications or blended with coco fibre, seed-raising mix, potting mix or perlite depending on the crop and the balance of moisture retention and drainage required.

Ideal for Seed Raising & Propagation

Vermiculite is particularly useful during germination because it helps maintain consistent moisture around seeds. A thin layer can be spread over newly sown seeds where appropriate, while vermiculite can also be incorporated into propagation and seed-raising mixes.

Its high moisture-holding capacity makes it useful for growing media that dry too quickly. Vermiculite can also help retain positively charged plant nutrients within the root zone as part of an appropriate growing mix.

Mix with Coco Fibre

For wheatgrass, microgreens, seedlings and other tray-grown crops, vermiculite can be combined with Coco Fibre Growing Medium to create a lightweight, moisture-retentive growing mix.

As a practical OzSprout starting combination, mix 15L of vermiculite with one hydrated 2kg coco fibre block, or 30L with one hydrated 5kg block.

These ratios are starting points rather than fixed requirements. Crops that prefer faster drainage may benefit from a lower proportion of vermiculite or the addition of a more freely draining component such as perlite.

Suitable for Microgreens & Wheatgrass

Vermiculite can be incorporated into growing media for tray-grown crops where additional moisture retention is useful. It can be blended through coco fibre or another suitable medium, or used as a light seed covering for selected crops.

For tray growing, use the mixture in a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray or another suitable propagation tray with appropriate drainage.

Vermiculite vs Perlite

Although vermiculite and perlite are both lightweight horticultural minerals, they perform different roles. Vermiculite is primarily used for moisture retention, while perlite is generally chosen where additional drainage and aeration are required.

Many growing mixes use both materials to balance moisture retention with airflow and drainage around the root zone.

Use in Pots & Containers

Vermiculite can also be incorporated into potting and container-growing mixes where the existing medium dries too quickly or requires greater moisture retention.

For plants that prefer very free-draining conditions, use vermiculite conservatively and balance the mix with a suitable drainage component.

How to Use Vermiculite

Vermiculite can be used for seed raising, propagation, microgreens, wheatgrass, potting mixes and other growing applications where additional moisture retention is useful.

Using Vermiculite with Coco Fibre

Vermiculite combines well with coco fibre when you want a lightweight growing medium with increased moisture-holding capacity.

Practical OzSprout starting combinations:

15L vermiculite + 1 hydrated 2kg coco fibre block
30L vermiculite + 1 hydrated 5kg coco fibre block

These are starting ratios rather than fixed horticultural rules. Adjust the mixture according to the crop, environment and watering requirements.

How to Mix with Coco Fibre

Hydrate the coco fibre separately until fully expanded.
Break apart and fluff the hydrated fibre.
Measure the required amount of vermiculite.
Add the vermiculite gradually to the coco fibre.
Mix thoroughly until it is evenly distributed.
Check the overall moisture level.
Fill the grow tray, propagation tray, pot or container without heavily compacting the mixture.
Water according to the needs of the crop.

Seed Raising

Vermiculite can be useful during germination where consistent surface moisture is required.

To use it as a seed covering:

Fill the tray or pot with an appropriate seed-raising medium.
Sow the seeds at the recommended depth.
Apply a thin layer of vermiculite over the surface where suitable for the crop.
Water gently using a fine rose, mist or another method that will not displace the seed.
Maintain even moisture without saturating the growing medium.
Provide the appropriate temperature and light conditions for germination.

Do not bury seeds more deeply than recommended simply because vermiculite is being used.

Propagation & Cuttings

Vermiculite can be blended into propagation media where increased moisture retention is useful.

It can be combined with:

Coco fibre
Perlite
Seed-raising mix
Potting mix
Other suitable propagation media

Adjust the proportion according to how much moisture the particular plant or cutting requires.

Microgreens & Wheatgrass

For tray-grown microgreens and wheatgrass, vermiculite can be used as:

an amendment to coco fibre or another growing medium;
a light seed covering where appropriate; or
a moisture-retaining component of a soil-free mix.

Different crops have different moisture requirements.

Avoid creating an excessively wet vermiculite-heavy mix for crops that are sensitive to saturated growing conditions.

Potting Mixes & Containers

Mix vermiculite through suitable potting or container-growing media when additional moisture retention is desirable.

A growing mix that already retains substantial moisture may require only a small amount.

For plants that prefer faster drainage, use less vermiculite and consider incorporating an appropriate drainage component.

Watering

Vermiculite can hold substantial amounts of moisture.

Check the actual growing medium before watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

The presence of vermiculite does not prevent waterlogging, so avoid repeatedly adding water when the root zone is already sufficiently moist.

Handling Vermiculite

Dry vermiculite can produce fine mineral dust during handling.

Pour and mix gently.
Avoid deliberately creating airborne dust.
Work in a well-ventilated area.
Lightly dampen the material if dust becomes excessive.
Avoid breathing dust.
Follow any safety directions supplied on the product packaging.

Storage

Keep unused vermiculite:

dry;
protected from rain;
sealed or covered where practical;
away from contamination; and
stored so the granules are not unnecessarily crushed or compacted.

Allow opened bags to remain dry between uses.
