Wheatgrass FAQ

Find practical answers about growing wheatgrass from seed, caring for your trays, harvesting and juicing. For detailed instructions, explore the linked OzSprout guides.

How do I grow wheatgrass at home?

Soak suitable wheat seed, let short roots emerge, then spread it over moist growing medium in a draining tray. Cover during early establishment, then provide light, moisture and airflow. Follow our step-by-step wheatgrass growing guide for the full method.

Which seeds should I use for wheatgrass?

Use whole, viable wheat grain sold for growing edible wheatgrass. Cracked, cooked or otherwise processed wheat will not grow reliably. See our Organic Wheatgrass Seeds for current pack sizes and growing instructions.

How long should I soak wheatgrass seeds?

Our wheatgrass growing guide recommends approximately 6–12 hours, using the shorter end in warmer conditions. Drain and rinse, then pre-germinate for roughly 12–24 hours until short roots appear. Follow your seed or kit instructions and avoid leaving grain in stagnant water.

How much wheatgrass seed should I use per tray?

Match the seed quantity to your tray and product instructions. Our standard wheatgrass seed guide suggests about 150–200g of dry seed for a 25 × 50cm tray. Spread it evenly; several overlapping layers can restrict airflow and hold too much moisture.

Can I grow wheatgrass without soil?

Yes. Coco coir or another suitable soil-free growing medium can support the roots. The medium should retain moisture while allowing drainage. Growing without soil does not mean leaving the grain submerged in water.

Can I grow wheatgrass indoors all year?

Yes, when indoor light, temperature and airflow are suitable. After the covered stage, use bright indirect daylight or a suitable grow light. Avoid hot windowsills and enclosed, stuffy spaces.

How often should I water wheatgrass?

Check the tray daily and keep the medium evenly moist without leaving it waterlogged. The amount needed changes with temperature, airflow and tray size. Once roots establish, bottom watering can help keep foliage drier. See our tray-watering guide.

Does wheatgrass need fertiliser?

Supplementary fertiliser is often unnecessary for a short wheatgrass crop. If your growing setup calls for it, use a product suitable for edible crops and follow its directions. More fertiliser is not a substitute for suitable light, drainage and airflow.

Why is my wheatgrass yellow, patchy or falling over?

Check light after uncovering, moisture, drainage, seed density and airflow. A tray that dries out or stays saturated can grow unevenly. Our tray-growing troubleshooting guide explains common symptoms. Discard crops showing decay.

Is the white fuzz on wheatgrass mould or root hairs?

Root hairs attach to individual roots; mould can form irregular patches or spread between seeds and across the medium. A rinse test cannot prove a crop is safe. If you are unsure, or see slime or decay, discard it. Read our mould versus root hairs guide.

When and how should I harvest wheatgrass?

Under suitable conditions, wheatgrass is usually ready around 7–10 days after sowing, when blades are approximately 10–15cm tall. Cut above the growing medium with clean scissors, keeping roots and seed out of the harvest. Use the crop’s condition as well as its age.

Will wheatgrass regrow after cutting?

It may regrow, but a second crop is often thinner and less even. For predictable results, start a fresh tray. Remove the old root mat and growing medium and clean reusable trays before the next batch.

How do I juice wheatgrass?

Use a machine whose manufacturer says it can process wheatgrass. A suitable slow juicer or dedicated manual wheatgrass juicer can separate juice from fibre; a blender needs water and a straining step. See how to juice wheatgrass at home.

How should I store harvested wheatgrass and fresh juice?

Refrigerate cut grass promptly in a clean container and keep excess moisture out. Rinse with drinking-quality water before juicing. Prepare juice close to use; if keeping it briefly, refrigerate promptly at 5°C or below. Follow any supplied storage instructions and discard spoiled produce.

How should I store unused wheatgrass seeds?

Keep dry seed sealed, cool and protected from moisture and heat. If refrigerated, let the sealed container warm towards room temperature before opening to reduce condensation. Our seed-storage guide explains the details.

Can I buy fresh wheatgrass instead of growing it?

Yes. OzSprout offers fresh wheatgrass grown to order. Email admin@ozsprout.com.au with your quantity and required date so we can confirm availability and arrangements before growing.
