Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Wheatgrass Seeds

Grow fresh wheatgrass at home with Australian-grown organic wheat seed. Ideal for wheatgrass juice, short wheat sprouts, cooking and home milling, with bulk sizes available Australia-wide.

Description

Australian Organic Wheatgrass Seeds for Home Growing

Grow dense trays of fresh wheatgrass at home with our Australian-grown Organic Wheatgrass Seeds. These whole, viable wheat grains are ideal for year-round indoor growing and typically produce fresh green wheatgrass ready to harvest in approximately 7–10 days.

Wheatgrass develops upright green blades with a fresh, grassy and mildly sweet flavour and is most commonly grown for fresh juicing. The same whole wheat seed can also be grown as short wheat sprouts, cooked as wheat berries, milled into wholemeal flour, grown as pet grass or planted through to maturity.

Grow Fresh Wheatgrass for Juicing

For wheatgrass, soak the seed before sowing and briefly pre-germinate it until small white roots begin to appear. Spread the germinated grain densely over moist soil, coco fibre or another suitable growing medium, cover during early establishment and then provide bright light, good airflow and consistent moisture.

A Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray provides the drainage and shallow growing depth suited to producing a dense crop at home.

Coco Fibre Growing Medium is also well suited to wheatgrass, providing a lightweight medium that holds moisture while still allowing good root aeration and drainage.

Harvest Young, Fresh Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is generally ready to harvest when the blades reach approximately 10–15cm tall, usually around 7–10 days after sowing under suitable conditions.

Cut the grass cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp knife. Wash the harvested blades thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water before preparation.

Grow Short Wheat Sprouts

The same whole wheat grain can also be grown as short wheat sprouts without taking the crop through to the grass stage.

Soaked wheat develops small white roots and a mildly sweet, nutty flavour. Short sprouts are generally harvested within approximately 3–6 days while the roots remain relatively short and the grain retains its chewy texture.

Wheat sprouts can be incorporated into cooked grain dishes and sprouted-grain recipes. Thorough cooking provides the lowest food-safety risk.

Cook Whole Wheat Berries

Whole wheat grain can also be cooked without sprouting. Simmered wheat berries develop a firm, pleasantly chewy texture suitable for grain bowls, salads, soups, casseroles, pilafs and other savoury dishes.

Soaking the grain before cooking is optional but can help soften it and reduce cooking time.

Mill into Fresh Wholemeal Flour

Dry wheat grain can be milled using suitable grain-milling equipment to produce fresh wholemeal wheat flour. Use it for breads, sourdough, rolls and other suitable baking recipes.

Wheat contains gluten and is not suitable for people who need to avoid gluten.

Pet Grass & Mature Wheat

Wheatgrass can also be grown as fresh pet grass for suitable animals, including cats, or planted outdoors and allowed to develop into mature wheat plants under appropriate growing conditions.

How to Grow Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is best grown densely in a shallow tray using soil, coco fibre or another suitable growing medium. Soaking and briefly pre-germinating the wheat before sowing helps produce faster and more even establishment.

For additional detail, see the OzSprout How to Grow Wheatgrass – Step-by-Step Guide.

What You Need

  • Approximately 150–200g of wheatgrass seed per 25 × 50cm tray
  • A shallow growing tray with drainage
  • A second tray or suitable cover
  • Seed-raising mix, coco fibre or another suitable growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A spray bottle or gentle watering method
  • Clean scissors or a sharp knife for harvesting

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Thoroughly clean the trays, soaking container and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Use approximately 150–200g of wheatgrass seed per standard 25 × 50cm tray.
  3. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the wheat several times with clean, cool drinking-quality water. Remove any visibly damaged or deteriorated grains.
  4. Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 6–12 hours. Around 6–8 hours is generally suitable in warmer conditions, while 8–12 hours may be appropriate in cooler conditions.
  5. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water and rinse the grain again.
  6. Pre-germinate: Leave the drained wheat in a clean sprouting container for approximately 12–24 hours, rinsing and draining as required. Sow once small white roots begin to emerge.
  7. Prepare the tray: Add approximately 1–2cm of moist growing medium and level the surface.
  8. Sow densely: Spread the pre-germinated wheat evenly across the growing medium. The grains can sit close together but should not form thick overlapping piles.
  9. Cover: Place a second tray, damp paper liner or suitable cover over the crop during approximately the first 2 days of root establishment.
  10. Uncover: Remove the cover when the shoots reach approximately 1–2cm and begin lifting it.
  11. Provide light: Move the tray into bright indirect light or beneath a suitable grow light.
  12. Water carefully: Keep the growing medium consistently moist without waterlogging.
  13. Bottom-water when established: Once a strong root mat has formed, bottom watering can help provide moisture while keeping the foliage drier.
  14. Maintain airflow: Good airflow is particularly important in warm or humid conditions.
  15. Harvest: Cut the wheatgrass when approximately 10–15cm tall, generally around 7–10 days after sowing.

Tips for Best Results

  • Avoid excessive heat.
  • Do not leave the grain soaking unnecessarily long in warm conditions.
  • Drain thoroughly after soaking and pre-germination.
  • Sow densely but avoid thick piles of overlapping grain.
  • Keep the growing medium moist rather than saturated.
  • Maintain good airflow around the crop.
  • Bottom watering is useful once the root mat is established.
  • Fine white root hairs can appear around germinating wheat and should not automatically be confused with mould.
  • Harvest with clean scissors or a clean sharp knife.
  • Wash harvested wheatgrass before preparation.
  • Discard crops showing genuine mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

Growing Short Wheat Sprouts in a Jar

The same seed can also be harvested before the grass stage.

  1. Add approximately 1.5 tablespoons / 20g of wheat seed to a clean 500ml sprouting jar.
  2. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Soak for approximately 10–12 hours.
  4. Drain completely.
  5. Rinse and thoroughly drain approximately 2–3 times daily.
  6. Keep away from hot direct sunlight.
  7. Harvest when short white roots have developed, generally within approximately 3–6 days.

For wheatgrass production, transfer pre-germinated grain to a growing tray rather than continuing to grow it in the jar.

Cooking Whole Wheat Berries

  1. Sort and rinse the dry wheat.
  2. Soak overnight if desired.
  3. Drain and rinse.
  4. Cover generously with fresh water.
  5. Simmer until completely tender but still pleasantly chewy.
  6. Drain any excess cooking water.

Use cooked wheat berries in grain bowls, salads, soups, casseroles, pilafs and other suitable dishes.

Milling into Wholemeal Flour

Make sure the grain is completely dry before milling.

Use a suitable grain mill to produce wholemeal flour for breads, sourdough and other baking applications.

Wheat contains gluten.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain good drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.

Storage

Store dry wheatgrass seed tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns towards room temperature before opening the container to reduce condensation.

Have used these seeds before, and they are brilliant - great germination rate. I use them for making rejuvelac, but this time, after making the rejuvelac, I plan on dehydrating & seasoning the sprouts for a snack 😃 May also attempt growing wheatgrass for smoothies too!
