Mr Fothergill’s Microgreens Growing Tray – Soil-Free
Description
Description
Soil-Free Microgreens Growing Tray
The Mr Fothergill’s Microgreens Growing Tray is a compact, reusable system for growing fresh microgreens on a kitchen benchtop, windowsill or other bright indoor growing area. Instead of using loose soil or coco fibre, seeds are supported on a thin paper liner while developing roots extend towards the water reservoir below.
Measuring approximately 27cm long × 15cm wide × 4cm high, the tray provides a convenient option for growing smaller batches of microgreens indoors without the mess associated with loose growing media.
Reservoir-Based Microgreen Growing
The system consists of a black upper growing tray and clear lower water reservoir. During germination, seeds are kept moist with a fine water mist. Once the roots extend through the upper tray and reach the water below, the reservoir supplies moisture directly to the root zone.
This transition from surface misting to root-zone watering helps keep the system simple while allowing the developing plants to access moisture as they grow.
Suitable for a Range of Microgreens
The tray can be used for many common microgreen varieties, including broccoli, radish, kale, mustard, rocket, beetroot, amaranth and other suitable crops.
For colourful, fast-growing greens, try our Purple Radish Microgreen Seeds. For a larger crop with thick stems and a mild nutty flavour, Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds can also be grown using an appropriate seed quantity and preparation method.
Different microgreens vary considerably in seed size, seeding density, pre-soaking requirements, germination method and harvest time, so always follow the instructions for the particular crop being grown.
Compact Growing for the Kitchen Bench
Because the system does not require loose growing medium, it is particularly useful for growers wanting a small, tidy microgreen setup for indoor use.
Simply add suitable microgreen seed, a thin paper liner and clean water. A fine mist sprayer and temporary germination cover may also be useful during early establishment.
Grow & Harvest Fresh Microgreens at Home
Many fast-growing microgreens can be harvested within approximately 7–14 days, although the exact timing depends on the variety and growing conditions.
Microgreens are normally harvested by cutting the stems above the seed and root zone, leaving the roots and remaining seed material behind in the tray.
Use freshly harvested microgreens in salads, sandwiches, wraps, bowls and savoury dishes, or as a fresh garnish immediately before serving.
For broader guidance on seeding, germination, lighting, watering and harvesting, see our How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide.
Reusable & Easy to Clean
After each crop, remove the roots, seed remains and used paper liner, empty the water reservoir and thoroughly wash both tray components.
Allow the tray and reservoir to dry completely before beginning another crop.
