Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Sunflower Microgreen Seeds

Grow thick, crunchy Sunflower microgreens with substantial pale stems, broad green cotyledons and a mild, distinctly nutty flavour. An Australian-grown seed ideal for salads, sandwiches, wraps, bowls, juicing and fresh garnishes.

Description

Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds for Thick, Crunchy Shoots

Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds produce substantial young greens with thick, crisp stems, broad green cotyledons and a mild, naturally nutty flavour. Sunflower is one of the largest and most satisfying microgreens to grow, producing considerably more texture and bulk than fine-seeded crops such as broccoli, mustard or radish.

These are the same whole sunflower seeds used in our separate sprouting product. The difference is how they are grown and harvested. For microgreens, the seeds are soaked, sown densely onto a supportive growing medium, kept under light-to-moderate pressure while the roots establish and then exposed to bright light to develop thick stems and broad green cotyledons.

Crisp Texture & Mild Nutty Flavour

Sunflower microgreens have thick, succulent stems and broad green seed leaves with a fresh crunch and mild, slightly sweet nutty flavour. Their substantial texture makes them useful as more than a decorative garnish.

Add freshly harvested sunflower shoots to salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps and grain bowls, or use them as a fresh topping for soups and savoury dishes. Their mild flavour and crisp texture also combine well with smaller, more strongly flavoured microgreens.

Designed for Tray-Grown Sunflower Shoots

For microgreen production, Black Sunflower is grown as a dense tray crop rather than as a short sprout. Pre-soaking hydrates the large seed, while a weighted cover during early germination helps maintain seed-to-medium contact and encourages strong root anchoring.

For a standard 25 × 50cm tray, use approximately 100–140g of dry seed on a supportive growing medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium. A Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray provides a suitable format for producing the dense root mat and broad green canopy characteristic of sunflower microgreens.

Broad Green Leaves & Naturally Retained Hulls

Sunflower seedlings commonly emerge with parts of their black seed hulls still attached to the cotyledons. This is normal. As the leaves expand, many hulls loosen naturally and can be gently removed without damaging the tender foliage.

Once uncovered, provide bright light, good airflow and preferably bottom water. Harvest when the broad green cotyledons are fully open, the stems remain crisp and the first true leaves have not yet become large or coarse.

Compare Black & Grey Sunflower Microgreens

Black Sunflower produces the classic thick-stemmed, broad-leaved sunflower microgreen crop. If you would like to grow another sunflower type in trays, see our Grey Sunflower Microgreen Seeds.

Microgreens vs Short Sunflower Sprouts

The same Black Sunflower seed can also be grown as a short sprout, but the growing method and harvest stage are different. Microgreens are rooted into a growing medium, exposed to light and harvested by cutting the stems above the tray once broad green leaves have developed.

If your goal is short sunflower sprouts rather than leafy tray-grown shoots, use the separate sprouting product and follow the dedicated sprouting instructions.

How to Grow Black Sunflower Microgreens

Black Sunflower is a substantial tray-grown microgreen with thick crisp stems, broad green cotyledons and a mild nutty flavour. The large seed is soaked before sowing and benefits from light-to-moderate pressure while the roots establish.

For a complete crop-specific walkthrough, see How to Grow Sunflower Microgreens at Home.

Quick Start

For a standard 25 × 50cm tray:

  • Seed: 100–140g dry seed
  • Pre-soak: 8 hours
  • Growing medium: 2–4cm deep
  • Weighted germination: 3–4 days
  • Germination: approximately 2–5 days after soaking
  • Temperature: 18–24°C
  • Watering: bottom water once rooted
  • Harvest: 8–12 days
  • Harvest height: approximately 8–12cm

What You Need

  • Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds
  • A 25 × 50cm tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, seed-raising mix or another supportive growing medium
  • A clean soaking container
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A second tray for weighted germination
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Pre-Soak

Measure 100–140g dry seed before soaking.

  1. Rinse thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water.
  2. Place the seed in a large clean container.
  3. Cover generously with cool water.
  4. Keep floating seed submerged where practical.
  5. Soak for approximately 8 hours.
  6. Drain thoroughly.

Sunflower hulls naturally trap air, so some floating during the early part of soaking is normal.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, soaking containers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–4cm of coco coir, seed-raising mix or another supportive growing medium.
  3. Moisten evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread the soaked seed across the surface in a dense, relatively even single layer.
  5. Press the seed firmly against the growing medium.
  6. Place another tray directly on top and apply light-to-moderate, evenly distributed weight.
  7. Keep covered and weighted for approximately 3–4 days.
  8. Remove the upper tray once the seedlings are strongly rooted and actively lifting it.
  9. Move the crop into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  10. Maintain good airflow.
  11. Switch to bottom watering once the root system establishes.
  12. Remove loose hulls as the cotyledons expand.
  13. Harvest at approximately 8–12 days.

Weighted Germination & Blackout

Keep the tray under light-to-moderate pressure for approximately 3–4 days.

Weighting helps maintain good seed-to-medium contact and encourages strong root anchoring.

Remove the upper tray once the seedlings are actively lifting it. Do not continue compressing established shoots.

For more information about this stage, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Temperature & Light

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The pale seedlings should quickly develop thick pale-green stems, broad bright-green cotyledons and a dense upright canopy.

Watering

During covered germination, begin with an evenly moist growing medium and check it daily. Add a small amount of water only if the surface begins drying.

Once the roots are established, switch primarily to bottom watering:

  1. Add a shallow amount of water to the solid lower tray.
  2. Allow the growing medium to absorb moisture from below.
  3. Check moisture before watering again.
  4. Do not leave standing water beneath the crop.
  5. Avoid repeatedly wetting the leaves and hulls from above.

The root zone should remain moist but not waterlogged.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Seed Hulls

Black Sunflower seedlings commonly retain parts of their hulls as the cotyledons emerge.

Allow them to loosen naturally. If necessary, lightly moisten stubborn hulls and gently brush away only those that detach easily.

Do not pull tightly attached hulls from tender leaves.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

The crop is generally ready when:

  • cotyledons are fully open;
  • leaves are broad and bright green;
  • stems are thick and crisp;
  • shoots are approximately 8–12cm tall;
  • most loose hulls have detached; and
  • large true leaves have not yet developed.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Remove loose hulls before storage and refrigerate promptly. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Black Sunflower Microgreens vs Sunflower Sprouts

This method is specifically for tray-grown Black Sunflower microgreens.

The same Black Sunflower seed can also be grown as a short sprout, but sprouting uses a different growing method and earlier harvest stage.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Sunflower develops vigorous white roots that can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs usually grow directly from individual roots and become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between hulls or seedlings, remain visible after watering, or occur alongside soft seed, slime or unpleasant smells.

If uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Regrowth After Harvest

Sunflower is generally treated as a single-harvest microgreen.

After cutting the crop, clean the tray and begin a new sowing rather than relying on regrowth.

Growing Sunflowers to Maturity

Black Sunflower seed can also be planted outdoors.

For mature plants:

  1. Sow into well-drained soil during suitable warm conditions.
  2. Plant approximately 20–30mm deep.
  3. Provide full sun.
  4. Allow adequate spacing.
  5. Maintain moisture during establishment.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean soaking containers, trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow, particularly around the large seed and hull layer.

Discard microgreens showing mould, slime, deteriorating seed, abnormal discolouration or sour or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Black Sunflower seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
