Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds

Australian-grown whole unhulled buckwheat seed for fast-growing microgreens, cover cropping and green manure. Produces tender green shoots with colourful stems and a mild, fresh tangy flavour.

Description

Whole Unhulled Buckwheat Seeds for Microgreens

Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds are whole Fagopyrum esculentum seeds with their natural dark hull intact. The current seed is Australian-grown and particularly suited to producing tender buckwheat microgreens, where the intact hull supports normal germination and early seedling development.

Buckwheat grows quickly into broad, soft green cotyledons carried on pale stems that may develop pink, red or yellow tones. The shoots have a mild, fresh and slightly tangy flavour and work well in salads, wraps, bowls and colourful garnishes.

Fast-Growing Buckwheat Microgreens

Whole buckwheat seed benefits from pre-soaking before sowing. Soak for approximately 6–12 hours, drain thoroughly and spread the seed evenly across a moist soil or coco-based growing medium.

Germination usually begins within approximately 1–2 days, followed by several days of covered growth while the roots and shoots establish. Once exposed to good light, the initially pale cotyledons quickly develop their normal green colour.

A drainable microgreen grow tray with a suitable medium such as coco fibre provides a practical setup for growing buckwheat microgreens and allows bottom watering once the roots are established.

Buckwheat microgreens are generally ready to harvest in approximately 8–12 days, although cooler growing conditions may extend the crop to around 14 days.

Mild, Tender Greens for Culinary Use

The broad cotyledons have a soft texture and mild flavour that makes them easy to combine with stronger microgreens. Use freshly harvested buckwheat greens in salads, sandwiches, wraps, bowls and mixed microgreen dishes, or as a colourful garnish.

Buckwheat greens naturally contain fagopyrins, so they are best enjoyed in normal culinary portions rather than consumed in unusually large quantities or used routinely in concentrated green juices.

Also Suitable for Cover Crops & Green Manure

Buckwheat is a fast-growing annual broadleaf crop that can also be planted outdoors as a cover crop, green manure and flowering crop for beneficial insects. Its rapid establishment provides groundcover and can help compete with weeds before the crop is cut down.

Unhulled Seed vs Buckwheat Kernels

This whole unhulled seed is primarily suited to microgreen production and planting. It is different from hulled buckwheat kernels or groats used for cooking, milling and short kernel sprouting. If your main purpose is culinary use rather than planting, a hulled kernel product is the more appropriate choice.

Available from 500g through to 20kg, the range suits home growers, microgreen producers, market gardeners and larger-scale crop production.

How to Grow Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreens

Buckwheat is a fast-growing, large-seeded microgreen that benefits from pre-soaking and several days of covered establishment before moving into light. The whole hull-on seed produces broad, tender cotyledons and is best grown on a moist, well-drained growing medium.

For the general tray-growing process, see the OzSprout How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide.

What You Need

  • Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds
  • A clean drainable tray, such as the Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Fine seed-raising mix, coco fibre or another suitable microgreen growing medium
  • Clean, drinking-quality water
  • A container for soaking
  • An inverted tray or suitable cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, start with approximately:

120g dry seed per tray

Measure the seed before soaking.

After soaking, spread the swollen seed in an even, dense layer with minimal overlapping. Excessively thick areas can restrict airflow and hold unnecessary moisture around the hulls and stems.

Pre-Soak

Soak for approximately:

6–12 hours in cool water

  1. Measure the dry seed.
  2. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Place it in a clean container.
  4. Cover generously with clean, cool water.
  5. Soak for 6–12 hours.
  6. Drain completely.
  7. Rinse once more before sowing.

Avoid unnecessarily prolonged soaking, particularly in warm conditions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean the equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse trays, soaking containers, covers and tools before beginning.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of suitable medium to the tray. Fine seed-raising mix or Coco Fibre Growing Medium are suitable options.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly before sowing and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be moist but not saturated.
  4. Sow the soaked seed. Spread the drained seed evenly across the surface in one dense layer with minimal overlapping.
  5. Press gently. Ensure good contact between the seed and growing medium. There is no need to bury the seed deeply.
  6. Cover the tray. Place an inverted tray or suitable cover over the crop for approximately 3–4 days while the roots and shoots establish.
  7. Monitor moisture. Check the tray regularly. Buckwheat hulls can hold moisture, so avoid repeatedly saturating the crop during covered growth.
  8. Move into light. Once the shoots are established, remove the cover and place the tray in bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  9. Maintain airflow. Good airflow helps prevent stagnant moisture from remaining around the dense stems and hulls.
  10. Bottom water once established. Once the roots have developed well, water primarily from below rather than repeatedly soaking the foliage.

Covered Germination

Keep the crop covered for approximately:

3–4 days

An inverted tray works well during this establishment period.

Buckwheat does not require the substantial physical pressure often used for sunflower or pea shoots. The aim is to maintain good seed-to-medium contact and allow the emerging seedlings to establish evenly.

Freshly uncovered shoots may initially appear pale. They normally develop their green colour quickly after exposure to suitable light.

Germination

Expect germination to begin in approximately:

1–2 days

Germination can vary with seed temperature, moisture and growing conditions.

Do not compensate for slower germination by continuously saturating the tray.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

Around 20°C is a useful target for steady germination and growth.

Warmer conditions combined with excessive moisture can increase problems in dense buckwheat trays, so maintain airflow and avoid waterlogging.

Light

After covered growth:

  • move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights;
  • provide consistent light each day;
  • maintain airflow around the canopy; and
  • avoid excessive heat.

The initially pale leaves should progressively become green after exposure to light.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without leaving it saturated.

During early establishment, mist or gently surface-water only when necessary.

Once roots are established, switch primarily to bottom watering. This keeps water directed toward the root zone while reducing unnecessary moisture on the foliage and hulls.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Avoid:

  • leaving the tray permanently standing in deep water;
  • repeatedly soaking the foliage;
  • waterlogged growing medium; and
  • stagnant, humid growing conditions.

Removing Seed Hulls

Some dark hulls may remain attached to the cotyledons as the crop develops.

Most will loosen naturally as the leaves open.

As harvest approaches:

  • allow loose hulls to fall naturally;
  • lightly mist stubborn hulls if needed to help soften them;
  • gently brush or lift loose hulls from the canopy; and
  • avoid pulling forcefully on hulls that are still firmly attached.

A small number of remaining hulls is normal.

Tips for Best Results

  • Measure the seed before soaking.
  • Soak for approximately 6–12 hours.
  • Drain thoroughly before sowing.
  • Spread the seed evenly with minimal overlapping.
  • Use a well-drained growing medium.
  • Avoid excessive watering during covered growth.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Move the crop into good light once established.
  • Bottom water once roots develop.
  • Remove loose hulls gently rather than pulling at the leaves.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

In cooler conditions, some trays may take up to approximately 14 days.

Look for:

  • fully opened cotyledons;
  • healthy green leaves;
  • tender upright stems;
  • good overall crop development; and
  • most loose hulls naturally separating from the canopy.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry rather than immediately after watering.

Refrigerate harvested microgreens promptly in a clean container.

Culinary Use

Buckwheat microgreens have broad, tender cotyledons and a mild, fresh flavour.

They can be used in:

  • salads;
  • wraps;
  • sandwiches;
  • bowls;
  • mixed microgreen dishes; and
  • garnishes.

Buckwheat greens naturally contain fagopyrins, which are photosensitising compounds found in the green portions of the plant.

Enjoy buckwheat microgreens in normal culinary portions rather than consuming unusually large quantities or routinely using them in concentrated green juices.

Cover Crop & Green Manure

The same whole unhulled seed can also be planted outdoors as:

  • a summer cover crop;
  • green manure;
  • fast-growing groundcover;
  • a flowering crop for beneficial insects; or
  • a full-size buckwheat crop.

For green manure, cut or incorporate the plants before mature seed develops if unwanted self-seeding is a concern.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, soaking containers, growing media, water and harvesting equipment.

Drain soaked seed thoroughly before sowing and maintain good airflow throughout the growing cycle.

Avoid continuously saturated growing conditions, particularly while the hulls remain densely packed around the young seedlings.

At harvest:

  • use clean scissors or a harvesting knife;
  • cut above the growing medium;
  • minimise growing-medium and root material in the harvested crop; and
  • refrigerate promptly.

Discard crops showing spreading mould, slime, decay, collapsed growth or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Keep unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain germination. Allow the sealed package to return to room temperature before opening it to reduce the risk of condensation forming on the seed.
