Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Thyme Herb Seeds

Thyme seeds for growing compact, aromatic perennial herbs with earthy, savoury leaves. Ideal for sunny pots and herb beds, with foliage suited to fresh or dried cooking.

Description

Thyme Herb Seeds for a Classic Culinary Herb

Thyme Herb Seeds grow into compact, aromatic perennial plants with small fragrant leaves and a distinctive earthy, savoury and slightly peppery flavour. This classic culinary herb is well suited to garden beds, raised beds, borders, rock gardens and containers.

Use fresh or dried Thyme with roasted vegetables, potatoes, mushrooms, beans, soups, stews, sauces, marinades, fish and other savoury dishes. Its concentrated flavour also works well in herb blends, infused oils and butters.

Compact Perennial for Repeat Harvests

Once established, Thyme forms a low, bushy evergreen to semi-evergreen plant that can provide repeated harvests over several growing seasons. Plants generally reach approximately 20–30cm tall, making Thyme particularly useful where garden space is limited.

Regular light harvesting and pruning encourage dense leafy growth while helping prevent older plants from becoming excessively woody.

Ideal for Sunny, Well-Drained Gardens

Thyme performs best in full sun with very freely draining soil. Young plants need consistent moisture while establishing, but mature plants tolerate drier conditions and generally prefer the soil to begin drying between waterings.

Raised beds, rock gardens and containers are particularly useful where natural garden soil stays wet for long periods.

Grow Alongside Other Mediterranean Herbs

Thyme combines well with other culinary herbs that prefer sunny, free-draining conditions. For a larger evergreen shrub with piney aromatic foliage, see our Rosemary Herb Seeds. For bold, earthy leaves and a compact woody habit, see our Sage Herb Seeds.

Grow Fresh Thyme from Seed

Thyme seed is small and is easiest to establish in seedling trays or pots before transplanting. Sow approximately 3mm deep, maintain steady moisture during germination and provide good light once seedlings emerge.

A useful established harvest generally begins from approximately 70–90 days after sowing, with light picking possible earlier once plants are firmly established.

How to Grow Thyme Herbs from Seed

Thyme is a compact perennial culinary herb that prefers full sun, excellent drainage and moderate watering once established. Its small aromatic leaves can be harvested fresh or dried for later use.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring and autumn
  • Sowing depth: approximately 3mm
  • Germination: approximately 14–21 days
  • Plant spacing: approximately 25–30cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Mature height: approximately 20–30cm
  • First established harvest: approximately 70–90 days
  • Life cycle: Hardy perennial woody herb

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow during mild to warm conditions.

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring to early summer
  • Temperate climates: spring and autumn
  • Subtropical climates: autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: favour the cooler, drier months
  • Hot and arid climates: autumn and spring

In frost-prone areas, seed can be started under protection before transplanting once severe frost risk has passed.

Sowing

Thyme is easiest to establish in trays, cells or small pots because the seed is very fine.

  1. Fill containers with fine, free-draining seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the mix before sowing.
  3. Sow thinly across the surface.
  4. Cover with approximately 3mm of fine mix.
  5. Mist gently or bottom water so the seed is not displaced.
  6. Keep evenly moist but not saturated.
  7. Provide good light once seedlings emerge.
  8. Transplant once seedlings have developed true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle.

No pre-soaking is normally required.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

14–21 days

Keep the seed-raising mix evenly moist throughout this period.

Thyme seedlings are initially very small, so use gentle watering and avoid allowing the surface to dry completely.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun

Allow approximately:

25–30cm between plants

Use light, freely draining soil with good airflow.

Watering

Keep young plants evenly moist while they establish.

Once established:

  • allow the upper soil to begin drying before watering;
  • water thoroughly rather than frequently;
  • avoid permanently wet soil;
  • reduce watering during cool or wet weather; and
  • never leave containers standing in water.

Established Thyme tolerates moderate dryness better than waterlogging.

Feeding

Thyme is not a heavy-feeding herb.

Moderately fertile soil is usually sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage soft, open growth.

Container-grown plants can be fed lightly during active growth if required.

Harvesting & Pruning

Begin an established harvest from approximately:

70–90 days after sowing

Light picking can begin earlier once plants are growing strongly.

Cut healthy leafy stems above green growth, leaving enough foliage for the plant to recover.

Regular harvesting also acts as light pruning and helps maintain a compact shape.

Avoid Cutting Hard into Old Wood

As Thyme matures, stems become woody.

Avoid severe pruning into old bare wood with no healthy foliage below the cut, as regrowth can be unreliable.

Regular light trimming from an early stage is preferable to trying to rejuvenate a heavily woody plant later.

Growing Thyme in Pots

Use a container approximately:

20–30cm wide or larger

with:

  • good drainage holes;
  • free-draining potting mix;
  • full sun; and
  • good airflow.

Allow the potting mix to begin drying between waterings once plants are established.

Thyme, Rosemary & Sage

Thyme is a compact Mediterranean-style herb suited to sunny, well-drained conditions.

For a larger woody shrub with strongly aromatic foliage, see Rosemary Herb Seeds.

For broad grey-green leaves with a stronger earthy flavour, see Sage Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest healthy Thyme sprigs as required.

Fresh Thyme can be refrigerated for short-term storage.

For longer storage, dry healthy stems completely in a shaded, well-ventilated location before stripping the leaves and storing them in an airtight container.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
