Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Rosemary Herb Seeds

Rosemary Herb Seeds grow into aromatic evergreen shrubs with fragrant needle-like leaves and a robust piney, savoury flavour. Ideal for roasted vegetables, potatoes, breads, sauces and Mediterranean cooking, with long-lived plants suited to garden beds, hedges and containers.

Description

Rosemary Herb Seeds for Fragrant Culinary Herbs

Rosemary Herb Seeds grow into aromatic evergreen shrubs with narrow, needle-like leaves and the distinctive savoury fragrance associated with Mediterranean cooking. A long-lived culinary herb, Rosemary is useful in herb gardens, raised beds, larger containers and sunny landscaped areas.

Fresh or dried Rosemary leaves add a robust piney, resinous and slightly peppery flavour to roasted potatoes, vegetables, breads, soups, sauces, marinades and savoury dishes. A small amount provides plenty of flavour, making an established plant particularly useful close to the kitchen.

Evergreen Perennial for Long-Term Harvesting

Rosemary develops into a woody perennial shrub that can remain productive for many years under suitable conditions. Regular harvesting of young stem tips encourages branching while providing fresh aromatic leaves throughout much of the year.

Under suitable conditions, plants generally reach approximately 60–120cm tall and may grow larger over time. Allow around 60–100cm between mature plants, or space more closely where Rosemary is deliberately being grown as a hedge.

Ideal for Sunny, Well-Drained Gardens

Rosemary thrives in full sun and requires excellent drainage. Young plants appreciate consistent moisture while establishing, but mature plants become relatively drought tolerant and generally perform better when the soil is allowed to dry slightly between watering.

Raised beds and containers are particularly useful where garden soil remains wet for long periods. Once established, Rosemary generally needs less frequent watering than softer leafy herbs such as basil, parsley or mint.

Well Suited to Pots & Mediterranean Herb Gardens

Rosemary grows well in large containers provided the potting mix drains freely and the plant receives plenty of direct sunlight. Its evergreen foliage and small flowers also give it ornamental value beyond its culinary use.

For another hardy Mediterranean herb suited to sunny, well-drained conditions, see our Thyme Herb Seeds.

Allow Time When Growing Rosemary from Seed

Rosemary grows more slowly from seed than many annual herbs. Germination generally takes approximately 14–25 days and can be uneven, so raise seedlings in trays or small pots and allow them time to establish before transplanting.

A useful first harvest generally begins from approximately 100–150 days after sowing. Once plants are established, young aromatic stem tips can be harvested repeatedly as required.

How to Grow Rosemary

Rosemary is a hardy evergreen culinary shrub that prefers full sun, warm conditions and excellent drainage. It grows more slowly from seed than many herbs but can provide repeated harvests for many years once established.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring and autumn
  • Sowing depth: Surface sow to approximately 3mm
  • Germination: 14–25 days; emergence may be uneven
  • Germination temperature: approximately 18–24°C
  • Plant spacing: 60–100cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Mature height: approximately 60–120cm
  • First useful harvest: approximately 100–150 days
  • Life cycle: Hardy evergreen perennial shrub

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow during:

Spring and autumn

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: favour spring after severe frost
  • Temperate climates: spring and autumn
  • Subtropical climates: autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: favour cooler, drier periods
  • Hot and arid climates: autumn and spring

Seed can also be started under protected conditions where suitable temperature and light can be maintained.

Sowing

Rosemary is best started in trays, cells or small pots.

  1. Fill containers with fine, freely draining seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the mix before sowing.
  3. Sow seeds thinly across the surface.
  4. Press gently into contact with the growing medium.
  5. Cover only lightly, no deeper than approximately 3mm.
  6. Mist gently or bottom water so the seed is not displaced.
  7. Keep evenly moist but never saturated.
  8. Place in a warm, bright position.
  9. Transplant once seedlings are well established.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

14–25 days

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Emergence can be uneven, so continue caring for the tray even if some seedlings appear earlier than others.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun

Allow approximately:

60–100cm between mature plants

Rosemary develops into a woody shrub and needs considerably more permanent space than small leafy herbs.

Use light, freely draining soil and provide good airflow.

Watering

Young Rosemary needs regular moisture while establishing.

Once established:

  • allow the upper soil to dry before watering again;
  • water thoroughly rather than frequently;
  • ensure excess water drains freely;
  • reduce watering during cool or wet weather; and
  • never leave container plants sitting in water.

Established Rosemary is relatively drought tolerant. Persistent waterlogging is a greater risk than brief periods of slight dryness.

Feeding

Rosemary does not need heavily enriched soil.

Moderately fertile, freely draining soil is generally sufficient.

Container plants can be fed lightly during active growth if required. Avoid excessive high-nitrogen feeding.

Harvesting & Pruning

A useful first harvest generally begins from approximately:

100–150 days after sowing

Light tip harvesting may begin earlier once plants are firmly established.

Cut healthy young stems above leafy growth, leaving plenty of foliage on young plants.

Regular light pruning encourages a denser, bushier shrub.

Avoid cutting heavily into old bare wood, as regrowth from leafless woody stems can be unreliable.

Growing Rosemary in Pots

Use a container approximately:

30cm wide and deep or larger

with:

  • generous drainage holes;
  • free-draining potting mix;
  • full sun; and
  • moderate watering.

Move plants into larger containers as their root system and woody framework develop.

Harvesting for Drying

Rosemary retains its flavour well when dried.

  1. Cut healthy leafy sprigs.
  2. Tie them into small loose bunches or spread them on a drying rack.
  3. Dry in a shaded, well-ventilated location.
  4. Strip the leaves once completely dry.
  5. Store in an airtight container.

Rosemary & Thyme

Rosemary has a strong piney, resinous flavour and grows into a larger woody shrub.

For a lower-growing Mediterranean herb with smaller leaves and a more earthy savoury flavour, see Thyme Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest fresh aromatic sprigs as required.

Fresh Rosemary can be refrigerated for short-term storage and also dries particularly well for longer keeping.

Store dried leaves only once completely dry and keep them away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
