Sage Herb Seeds for a Classic Culinary Garden Herb
Sage Herb Seeds grow into aromatic perennial plants with soft, textured grey-green leaves and a powerful savoury fragrance. Their earthy, slightly peppery flavour makes Sage particularly useful in hearty cooking, while the attractive foliage also gives the plant ornamental value in herb gardens and containers.
Use fresh or dried Sage with roasted vegetables, pumpkin, potatoes, beans, pasta, soups, sauces, stuffing and savoury breads. Its concentrated flavour means a relatively small amount can add plenty of character to a dish.
Hardy Perennial for Long-Term Harvesting
Once established, Sage develops into a compact woody shrub that can provide harvestable foliage over multiple seasons. Plants generally reach approximately 45–60cm tall and respond well to regular light harvesting and pruning.
Allow approximately 45–50cm between mature plants to provide enough room for branching and good airflow.
Ideal for Sunny, Well-Drained Gardens
Sage performs best in full sun with freely draining soil. Young plants appreciate consistent moisture while establishing, but mature plants become relatively tolerant of dry conditions and generally prefer the soil to begin drying between waterings.
Good drainage is particularly important during prolonged wet weather. Raised beds and containers are useful where garden soil tends to remain wet.
Grow Alongside Other Mediterranean Herbs
Sage grows well alongside other herbs that favour sunny, free-draining conditions. For a lower-growing herb with small earthy leaves, see our Thyme Herb Seeds. For a larger evergreen shrub with strongly aromatic, piney foliage, see our Rosemary Herb Seeds.
Flowers, Foliage & Culinary Use
Established Sage plants can produce attractive blue to purple-toned flowers, adding colour to the garden and providing a food source for visiting pollinators.
Begin light harvesting once plants are well established, generally from approximately 60–90 days after sowing. Cut young leaves and leafy stem tips as required, allowing the plant time to produce fresh growth between heavier harvests.
