Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Purple Orach Microgreen Seeds

Grow striking Purple Orach microgreens with rich burgundy-purple foliage and a mild spinach-like flavour with earthy, lightly tangy notes. Ideal for salads, sandwiches, garnishes and colourful microgreen mixes.

Description

Purple Orach Microgreen Seeds for Rich Colour & Mild Flavour

Purple Orach Microgreen Seeds produce distinctive young greens with burgundy, maroon and purple-red colouring. Also known as garden orach or mountain spinach, this unusual leafy crop provides strong colour and visual contrast while offering a much milder flavour than spicy mustard or radish microgreens.

Purple Orach is best treated as a specialty microgreen rather than an ultra-fast tray crop. The seed requires no pre-soaking and benefits from shallow sowing with a very light covering of fine growing medium. Allow approximately 14–21 days from sowing to harvest when growing for an attractive crop with developing true leaves.

Rich Purple Colour & Mild Spinach-Like Flavour

Purple Orach microgreens develop shades ranging from deep burgundy and maroon to vivid red-purple. Once the crop is established, good light encourages stronger pigmentation, compact stems and more intense foliage colour.

The flavour is mild and spinach-like with earthy, lightly salty and subtly tangy notes. This makes Purple Orach particularly useful when strong colour is wanted without the pronounced heat associated with mustard or radish microgreens.

Use freshly harvested shoots in salads, sandwiches, wraps and grain bowls, or as a colourful garnish for eggs, vegetables, seafood and plated savoury dishes. The rich foliage also contrasts particularly well with fresh green microgreens in mixed presentations.

A Specialty Microgreen Best Grown to True Leaf

Purple Orach develops its strongest visual character as the young leaves expand. For the most distinctive crop, allow the first true leaves to begin developing rather than harvesting immediately at the earliest cotyledon stage.

Sow approximately 10–20g per 25 × 50cm tray onto a fine, moist growing medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium. A very thin covering of fine growing medium or Vermiculite can help maintain seed contact and support more even establishment.

Allow for Natural Variation in Germination

Orach can produce seed of different sizes and physical characteristics, so individual seedlings may not always emerge at exactly the same time. Maintain consistent moisture, avoid deep burial and give slower seedlings time to establish before judging the finished stand.

Grow Orach Beyond the Microgreen Stage

The same seed can also be grown for baby leaf and mature leafy greens. At wider spacing, Orach develops into an annual leafy vegetable with tender young leaves that can be used fresh or cooked in a similar way to spinach.

How to Grow Purple Orach Microgreens

Purple Orach is a colourful specialty microgreen with burgundy-purple foliage and a mild spinach-like flavour. It requires no pre-soaking and is particularly attractive when allowed to develop its first true leaves.

What You Need

  • Purple Orach Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen growing medium
  • Optional fine vermiculite
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • A second tray or suitable germination cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

10–20g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the growing surface.

Orach seed can vary in size and appearance, so exact density may require some adjustment between seed lots.

Aim for even coverage without creating thick piles or heavily overlapping areas.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow Purple Orach seed dry.

Dedicated microgreen growing guidance does not require pre-soaking, and dry seed is considerably easier to distribute evenly.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse trays, covers and growing tools.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable fine-textured medium.
  3. Moisten before sowing. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The surface should be consistently damp without being saturated.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 10–20g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Sow evenly. Distribute the seed across the prepared growing surface.
  6. Press gently. Ensure good contact between the seed and moist medium.
  7. Cover very lightly. Apply a thin layer of fine coco coir, seed-raising mix or vermiculite. Avoid deep burial.
  8. Mist gently. Moisten the surface with clean drinking-quality water without flooding it.
  9. Cover during early establishment. Place another tray or suitable opaque cover over the crop.
  10. Check daily. Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the growing medium.
  11. Uncover as the seedlings establish. Remove the cover once germination is well underway and seedlings are beginning to push upward.
  12. Provide bright light. Move the crop beneath suitable grow lights or into bright indirect natural light.
  13. Maintain airflow. Good air movement becomes increasingly important as the foliage develops.
  14. Bottom water once rooted. Switch primarily to watering from below once the root system establishes.

Covered Germination / Blackout

Keep the tray covered for approximately:

3–4 days

Heavy weighting is unnecessary.

A short covered establishment period can help maintain moisture and support more consistent germination.

Check the crop daily and uncover once seedlings are established rather than keeping an actively growing crop in darkness longer than necessary.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

3–7 days

Orach can be somewhat less uniform than fast brassicas such as broccoli or mustard.

Some individual seeds may emerge later, particularly where seed size and dormancy vary.

Maintain appropriate moisture and temperature rather than increasing watering simply because emergence is uneven.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

Moderate temperatures provide a practical range for indoor tray production.

Avoid excessive heat combined with persistent humidity or saturated growing media.

Light & Colour Development

Once the crop is uncovered:

  • provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain consistent daily light;
  • rotate the tray if necessary;
  • maintain good airflow; and
  • avoid excessive heat.

Good light is particularly important for Purple Orach.

Adequate light encourages:

  • stronger burgundy-purple pigmentation;
  • compact growth;
  • sturdier stems; and
  • more attractive foliage.

Watering

During early germination, mist gently when necessary to maintain even surface moisture.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

When bottom watering:

  • add a shallow amount of water to the lower tray;
  • allow the growing medium to absorb moisture;
  • check moisture before watering again;
  • avoid permanent standing water;
  • minimise unnecessary wetting of established foliage; and
  • maintain good airflow.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use approximately 10–20g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Do not pre-soak.
  • Sow evenly.
  • Keep seed close to the surface.
  • Apply only a very thin covering of fine medium or vermiculite.
  • Keep covered for approximately 3–4 days.
  • Expect germination in approximately 3–7 days.
  • Maintain approximately 18–22°C.
  • Provide strong light after uncovering.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Bottom water once roots establish.
  • Allow true leaves to begin developing.
  • Harvest at approximately 14–21 days.

Allow True Leaves to Develop

Purple Orach is particularly attractive when grown beyond the very earliest microgreen stage.

As the crop develops, the young foliage becomes more characteristic and the burgundy, maroon and purple-red colouring becomes increasingly prominent.

For specialty culinary use, allow the first true leaves to begin developing before harvest.

Natural Seed Variation

Orach can produce seed with noticeably different physical characteristics.

This means one tray may show some variation in:

  • germination speed;
  • seedling size;
  • emergence timing; and
  • early growth.

A small amount of uneven emergence does not automatically indicate poor seed quality.

Give the tray sufficient time to develop before assessing the final stand.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Healthy root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly;
  • become more visible as the root zone dries slightly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between seedlings;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur with slime, decay or unpleasant smells.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

14–21 days from sowing

Purple Orach microgreens are generally ready when:

  • seedlings are well established;
  • burgundy-purple colour is clearly developed;
  • foliage is tender;
  • the first true leaves are developing;
  • shoots are approximately 5–8cm tall; and
  • the crop has reached your preferred colour and size.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry.

For additional guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. Avoid tightly packing or crushing the delicate foliage.

Growing as Baby Leaf

For baby-leaf Orach:

  1. Sow substantially less densely than for microgreens.
  2. Allow additional room between seedlings.
  3. Continue growing beyond the microgreen stage.
  4. Provide strong light.
  5. Maintain consistent moisture.
  6. Harvest tender young leaves at your preferred size.

Growing to Full Maturity

Purple Orach can also be grown as an annual leafy vegetable.

For mature plants:

  1. Direct sow or raise young plants carefully.
  2. Sow shallowly.
  3. Thin established plants to approximately 30–40cm apart.
  4. Grow in fertile, freely draining soil.
  5. Provide full sun to partial shade.
  6. Maintain regular moisture during active growth.
  7. Harvest tender leaves progressively.

Orach can be used as a warm-weather alternative to spinach and tolerates warmer conditions better than conventional spinach.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain:

  • appropriate moisture;
  • good drainage;
  • adequate airflow;
  • clean harvesting tools; and
  • prompt refrigeration after harvest.

Discard microgreens showing visible mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Purple Orach seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
