Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Wheatgrass Microgreen Seeds

Organic Wheatgrass Microgreen Seeds grow into dense, bright green blades with a fresh grassy flavour. Australian-grown organic wheat seed ideal for tray-grown wheatgrass, fresh cutting, juicing and regular home or commercial microgreen production.

Description

Organic Wheatgrass Seeds for Dense Tray-Grown Wheatgrass

Organic Wheatgrass Microgreen Seeds are grown in shallow trays to produce dense stands of upright, bright green wheatgrass. Unlike tender leafy microgreens, wheatgrass develops long, narrow cereal-grass blades and is grown primarily for cutting and fresh juicing.

The grain is soaked before sowing, spread densely across a supportive growing medium and allowed to establish a strong root mat before being exposed to bright light. Under suitable conditions, wheatgrass can generally be harvested in approximately 7–10 days.

Fresh Green Wheatgrass for Cutting & Juicing

Young wheatgrass develops a fresh grassy flavour with mild cereal sweetness. As the blades mature they become increasingly fibrous, so wheatgrass is generally processed through a suitable juicer rather than eaten whole like broccoli, radish or other tender microgreens.

Harvest the blades while they are bright green, upright and approximately 10–15cm tall. Cut cleanly above the growing medium and use promptly for the freshest result.

Designed for Dense Tray Growing

Wheatgrass is sown much more densely than small-seeded microgreens. After soaking, spread the hydrated grain evenly across a moisture-retentive growing medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium in a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray.

The developing roots quickly form a substantial mat beneath the crop. Good drainage, even moisture and airflow are particularly important because the dense grain layer can retain considerably more moisture than a conventional leafy microgreen tray.

From Pale Shoots to Bright Green Grass

During early establishment, the grain produces roots followed by pale shoots. Once uncovered and placed under suitable light, the blades rapidly become green and upright, forming the dense grass canopy associated with wheatgrass.

Once the root system is established, bottom watering helps supply moisture directly to the growing medium while reducing unnecessary wetting of the grain surface and grass blades.

Specifically for Growing Wheatgrass in Trays

This product page is specifically focused on growing green wheatgrass in trays. The finished crop is grown under light and harvested by cutting the grass above the growing medium, leaving the grain and root mat behind.

Wheat grown as short sprouts uses a different growing method and harvest stage, with the germinated grain harvested before a green grass canopy develops. Follow the dedicated sprouting product and instructions when your goal is wheat sprouts rather than wheatgrass.

How to Grow Organic Wheatgrass Microgreens

Organic Wheatgrass is grown densely in trays to produce upright green cereal grass for cutting and juicing. The grain is soaked before sowing, rooted into a growing medium and grown under bright light until the blades reach harvest size.

What You Need

  • Organic Wheatgrass Microgreen Seeds
  • A 25 × 50cm tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium
  • A clean soaking container
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A second tray or suitable germination cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm tray, use approximately:

200–250g dry wheat seed

Measure the grain before soaking.

Spread the hydrated grain densely and evenly without creating several deep layers of overlapping seed.

Pre-Soak

Pre-soak for approximately:

8–12 hours

  1. Measure the required dry wheat.
  2. Rinse thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water.
  3. Place the grain in a clean container.
  4. Cover generously with cool water.
  5. Soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  6. Drain thoroughly before sowing.

Allow plenty of room in the container because the grain expands as it absorbs water.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, soaking containers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread the soaked and drained wheat evenly across the surface.
  5. Press the grain firmly against the growing medium.
  6. Cover with another tray or suitable germination cover.
  7. Keep covered for approximately 2–3 days while the roots establish.
  8. Remove the cover when the pale shoots are strongly rooted and pushing upward.
  9. Move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  10. Maintain good airflow.
  11. Bottom water once the root mat establishes.
  12. Harvest when the blades are approximately 10–15cm tall, generally around 7–10 days from sowing.

Covered Germination

Keep the tray covered for approximately:

2–3 days

Light tray pressure can help maintain good contact between the grain and growing medium. Heavy weighting is generally unnecessary.

Remove the cover once strong rooting has occurred and the shoots are actively pushing upward.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect visible germination in approximately:

2–4 days

Roots normally emerge first, followed by pale shoots.

Maintain even moisture without leaving the swollen grain permanently saturated.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

Cool to moderate indoor temperatures suit wheatgrass well.

Excessive heat combined with a wet, densely seeded tray can increase deterioration and mould problems.

Light & Green Growth

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The initially pale shoots should quickly develop into:

  • bright green blades;
  • upright growth;
  • a dense grass canopy; and
  • a substantial root mat.

Rotate the tray if required for even growth.

Watering

Once the roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without leaving standing water beneath the tray.

Dense wheatgrass can retain considerable moisture, so check the root zone before watering again.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

7–10 days from sowing

Wheatgrass is generally ready when:

  • blades are bright green;
  • growth is dense and upright;
  • shoots are approximately 10–15cm tall; and
  • the grass remains young and fresh.

Cut cleanly approximately 1–2cm above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Do not harvest the roots, grain or growing medium.

For more information, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

For the freshest result, cut close to the time the wheatgrass will be used. If storing after harvest, refrigerate promptly in a clean container and keep the blades as dry as practical.

Using Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is considerably more fibrous than conventional leafy microgreens.

It is primarily suited to:

  • fresh wheatgrass juice;
  • wheatgrass shots; and
  • blending with liquid followed by thorough straining where appropriate.

A suitable wheatgrass or slow juicer is generally preferable to eating the mature grass blades whole.

Regrowth After Cutting

Wheatgrass may produce some regrowth after the first harvest if the root system remains healthy.

A second cut is sometimes possible, although it is generally less uniform than the first.

Monitor the grain and root layer carefully and discard the tray if deterioration develops.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Wheat develops a dense fibrous root system, and fine white root hairs can sometimes resemble mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between grains;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur with soft grain, slime or sour smells.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Wheatgrass vs Wheat Sprouts

This growing method is specifically for tray-grown wheatgrass.

Wheatgrass:

  • is rooted into a growing medium;
  • is grown under bright light;
  • develops long green blades;
  • remains in the tray for approximately 7–10 days; and
  • is harvested by cutting above the growing medium.

Wheat sprouts are harvested at a much earlier germination stage and use a different method.

Use the dedicated sprouting instructions when your goal is short wheat sprouts.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean soaking containers, trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Pay particular attention to good drainage and airflow because wheatgrass is grown at a high seed density.

Discard wheatgrass showing visible mould, slime, deteriorating grain, abnormal discolouration or sour or unpleasant smells.

Keep juicing equipment clean and prepare harvested wheatgrass promptly.

Seed Storage

Store unused wheat seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
