Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Rye Grass Microgreen Seeds

Grow dense trays of fresh green rye grass from Australian organic grain. A fast cereal microgreen with a mild grassy flavour, ideal for cutting, juicing and regular home microgreen production.

Description

Organic Rye Grass Seeds for Dense Tray-Grown Greens

Organic Rye Grass Microgreen Seeds are grown in shallow trays to produce dense stands of upright green cereal grass. Similar in growing style to wheatgrass, barley grass and oat grass, rye develops long narrow blades, vigorous roots and a fresh, mild cereal-grass aroma.

This product is specifically positioned for tray-grown rye grass. The grain is soaked before sowing, spread densely across a supportive growing medium and grown under bright light until a thick green canopy develops. Under suitable conditions, rye grass can generally be harvested in approximately 7–10 days.

Fresh Green Rye Grass for Cutting & Juicing

Young rye grass develops upright, narrow green blades with a mild, fresh and slightly earthy cereal flavour. Unlike tender leafy microgreens such as broccoli or radish, cereal grasses become increasingly fibrous as they mature.

For this reason, rye grass is particularly suited to cutting and juicing rather than being eaten whole as a conventional salad microgreen. Harvest while the blades are fresh, bright green and upright.

Dense, Vigorous Growth in Microgreen Trays

Rye develops a substantial root mat and performs well in a moisture-retentive growing medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium. A Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray provides a suitable shallow growing format for producing a dense stand of grass.

After soaking, sow the grain densely and evenly, keep it covered briefly while roots establish, then move the tray into bright light. Once rooted, bottom watering and good airflow help support vigorous growth while limiting unnecessary moisture around the grain and foliage.

Harvest a Thick Crop of Bright Green Blades

Rye grass grows quickly once established, changing from pale emerging shoots into a dense green canopy. Harvest is generally best when the blades are approximately 10–15cm tall and remain fresh and upright.

Cut cleanly above the growing medium, leaving the roots and grain behind. For the best quality, use the harvested grass promptly after cutting.

Looking for Rye Grain for Sprouting?

If you want rye primarily for short grain sprouts, cooking or home milling rather than growing green grass in trays, see our Organic Rye Grain.

How to Grow Rye Grass Microgreens

Organic Rye Grass is grown densely in trays to produce upright green cereal grass for cutting and juicing. Unlike jar-grown rye sprouts, the grain is rooted into a growing medium, exposed to bright light and harvested by cutting the green blades above the tray.

What You Need

  • Organic Rye Grass Microgreen Seeds
  • A 25 × 50cm tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium
  • A clean soaking container
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A second tray or suitable germination cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

180–220g dry rye grain per tray

Measure the grain before soaking.

Spread the soaked grain densely and evenly across the growing surface without creating deep piles.

Pre-Soak

Pre-soak for approximately:

8–12 hours

  1. Measure the required dry grain.
  2. Rinse thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water.
  3. Place the grain in a clean container.
  4. Cover generously with cool water.
  5. Soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  6. Drain thoroughly before sowing.

Use a container with sufficient room for the grain to expand as it absorbs water.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, soaking containers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread the soaked and drained rye evenly across the surface.
  5. Press gently to establish good contact with the growing medium.
  6. Cover with another tray or suitable germination cover.
  7. Keep covered for approximately 2–3 days while roots establish.
  8. Remove the cover when shoots are rooted and beginning to push strongly upward.
  9. Move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  10. Maintain good airflow.
  11. Bottom water once the root mat establishes.
  12. Harvest the green blades at approximately 7–10 days.

Covered Germination

Keep the tray covered for approximately:

2–3 days

Heavy weighting is unnecessary.

Remove the cover once the grain has rooted and the emerging shoots are beginning to lift upward.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

2–4 days

Roots generally emerge first, followed by pale shoots.

Avoid keeping the swollen grain permanently saturated. Consistent moisture is required, but stagnant water around the grain can encourage deterioration.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

16–22°C

Rye performs well under cool to moderate conditions.

Light & Growth

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The pale emerging shoots should quickly develop into upright green blades.

Adequate light helps produce:

  • strong green colour;
  • upright growth;
  • a dense canopy; and
  • sturdy grass blades.

Watering

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without leaving standing water beneath the tray.

Dense cereal-grass trays can retain considerable moisture, so check the root zone before watering again.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

7–10 days from sowing

Rye grass is generally ready when:

  • blades are bright green;
  • growth is upright and dense;
  • shoots are approximately 10–15cm tall; and
  • the grass remains fresh rather than coarse or ageing.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

The grain and root mat remain in the tray.

For more information, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

For the freshest result, harvest close to the time the grass will be used. If storing after harvest, refrigerate promptly in a clean container and keep the blades as dry as practical.

Using Rye Grass

Rye grass is a cereal grass rather than a tender leafy microgreen.

As the blades mature they become fibrous, so this crop is particularly suited to:

  • cutting fresh;
  • processing through a suitable grass juicer; and
  • growing as an alternative to wheatgrass, barley grass or oat grass.

It is not intended to be eaten whole in the same way as tender broccoli, radish or mizuna microgreens.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Rye produces a dense fibrous root system, and fine white root hairs can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between grains;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur with soft grain, slime or sour smells.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Rye Grass vs Rye Sprouts

This method is specifically for tray-grown rye grass.

Rye grass:

  • is rooted into a growing medium;
  • is grown under light;
  • develops long green blades; and
  • is harvested by cutting above the growing medium.

Rye sprouts use a different growing and harvesting method.

For sprouting, cooking or milling, see Organic Rye Grain.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean soaking containers, trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow and avoid standing water around the grain.

Discard rye grass showing visible mould, slime, deteriorating grain, abnormal discolouration or sour or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused rye grain sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated grain sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
