Organic Grey Striped Sunflower Microgreen Seeds

Grey Striped Sunflower produces thick stems, broad green cotyledons and a mild nutty flavour. Its large seed and substantial hull benefit from soaking and gentle tray pressure during early germination.

What You Need

• Grey Striped Sunflower Microgreen Seeds
• A 25 × 50cm tray with drainage holes
• A solid lower tray for bottom watering
• A second tray for weighted germination
• Coco coir, seed-raising mix or another supportive growing medium
• A clean soaking container
• Clean drinking-quality water
• Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
• Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm tray, use approximately:

60–85g dry seed

Measure before soaking.

Spread the hydrated seeds in a dense, even layer without creating thick overlapping piles.

Pre-Soak

Soak for approximately:

8–12 hours

As a guide:

• around 8 hours in warmer conditions
• up to 12 hours in cooler conditions

Rinse the seed first, cover generously with cool drinking-quality water, then drain thoroughly before sowing.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, soaking containers and growing tools.
2. Add approximately 2–4cm of coco coir, seed-raising mix or another supportive growing medium.
3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
4. Spread the soaked and drained seed evenly across the surface.
5. Press the seed firmly against the growing medium.
6. Place a second tray directly on top and apply light-to-moderate pressure.
7. Keep covered for approximately 3–4 days.
8. Remove the upper tray when the seedlings are strongly rooted and beginning to lift it.
9. Move the crop into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
10. Maintain good airflow.
11. Switch to bottom watering once the root mat is established.
12. Remove loose hulls as the cotyledons open.
13. Harvest at approximately 8–12 days.

Weighted Germination

Keep the tray covered under light-to-moderate pressure for approximately:

3–4 days

This helps maintain seed-to-medium contact and encourages strong rooting.

Remove the weight once the seedlings are actively lifting the upper tray. Do not continue compressing established shoots.

Germination

Expect visible germination in approximately:

2–5 days after soaking

Keep the growing medium moist, but avoid saturating the large seed and hull layer.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Avoid excessive warmth combined with stagnant humidity.

Light

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The pale seedlings should quickly develop thick stems and broad green cotyledons.

Watering

Watering changes as the crop develops.

During covered germination:

• Start with an evenly moist growing medium.
• Check moisture daily.
• If the surface begins drying, mist or water gently around the seed.
• Do not keep the seed layer continuously wet.

Once the roots are established:

• Switch primarily to bottom watering.
• Add a shallow amount of water to the solid lower tray.
• Allow the growing medium to absorb it from below.
• Check the tray before watering again.
• Do not leave standing water beneath the crop.
• Avoid repeatedly wetting the leaves and hulls from above.

Sunflower uses a reasonable amount of water once established, but the root zone should remain moist rather than waterlogged.

Hull Management

Grey Striped Sunflower has a relatively thick hull, so some seed coats may remain attached after emergence.

Allow the cotyledons to expand and loosen the hulls naturally.

If necessary, lightly mist stubborn hulls, allow them to soften, then gently brush away those that detach easily.

Do not pull firmly attached hulls from tender leaves.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

The crop is generally ready when:

• cotyledons are fully open;
• leaves are broad and green;
• stems are thick and crisp;
• most loose hulls have detached; and
• large true leaves have not yet developed.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Remove loose hulls before storage and refrigerate promptly. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Grey Striped vs Black Sunflower

Grey Striped Sunflower has larger seed and a heavier hull than Black Sunflower and generally produces a more substantial tray-grown shoot.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Sunflower develops vigorous white roots that can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs usually grow directly from individual roots and become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between hulls or seedlings, persist after watering, or occur with soft seed, slime or unpleasant smells.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Growing Sunflowers to Maturity

Grey Striped Sunflower seed can also be planted outdoors.

1. Choose a position in full sun.
2. Sow once conditions are suitably warm.
3. Plant approximately 10–20mm deep.
4. Allow generous spacing between plants.
5. Maintain moisture during establishment.
6. Allow flower heads to mature naturally if desired.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean soaking containers, trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow, particularly around the large hull-bearing seed.

Discard microgreens showing mould, slime, deteriorating seed, abnormal discolouration or sour or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Grey Striped Sunflower seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
