Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Grow dense, vivid green barley grass at home with our organic barley grass seeds. Barley is a fast-growing cereal grass that performs well in shallow trays and is generally ready to harvest in approximately 6–10 days.

The grain is soaked before sowing, then spread densely over a suitable growing medium where it develops into a thick mat of upright green blades. A Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray is well suited to this style of growing.

Fresh, Grassy Flavour for Juicing

Fresh barley grass has a clean, grassy flavour with a slightly bitter finish. The young blades are most commonly harvested for juicing and can be used on their own or combined with other fresh grasses and ingredients.

Harvest while the grass is young, green and tender, before the blades become increasingly coarse and fibrous.

How to Grow Barley Grass

Barley grass is grown densely in a shallow tray rather than as a conventional jar sprout. The grain is soaked first, then spread evenly over a moist growing medium and harvested while the blades are young and tender.

What You Need

  • Approximately 175–200g of barley seed for a standard 25 × 50cm growing tray
  • A shallow growing tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco Fibre Growing Medium, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium
  • A second tray or suitable cover for the initial germination period
  • Clean, drinking-quality water
  • Clean scissors or a sharp knife for harvesting

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the trays, soaking container and utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the seed: Use approximately 175–200g of dry barley seed for a standard 25 × 50cm tray. Aim for a dense, even seed layer without thick overlapping piles.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse the grain thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water, then cover generously with fresh water and soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  4. Drain the grain: Drain the soaking water completely and rinse again. The drained grain can be allowed to rest briefly until the first small root tips begin to appear before sowing.
  5. Prepare the tray: Add approximately 2–4cm of evenly moistened growing medium. Level the surface without heavily compacting it. The medium should be moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Sow evenly: Spread the soaked barley evenly across the surface and press gently to improve seed-to-medium contact. Do not bury the grain deeply.
  7. Cover during establishment: Place another tray or suitable cover over the crop for approximately 2–3 days while roots establish. Check the tray daily and add water only if the growing medium is beginning to dry.
  8. Move into light: Once the shoots are established and pushing strongly against the cover, uncover the tray and place it in bright indirect light or beneath suitable grow lights. Maintain good airflow and avoid excessive heat.
  9. Switch to bottom watering: Once the roots are established, water from below where practical. Add water to the solid lower tray and allow the growing medium to absorb moisture through the drainage holes. Avoid leaving the root zone continuously sitting in excess water.   10. Harvest: Barley grass is generally ready in approximately 6–10 days. Cut the blades cleanly just above the growing medium when they are green, tender and around 10–15cm tall.

Tips for Best Results

  • Spread the grain in a dense, even layer rather than piling seed on top of itself.
  • Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not saturated.
  • Dense cereal grasses need good airflow as the canopy develops.
  • Avoid prolonged hot direct sunlight.
  • Bottom watering is generally preferable once the roots are established.
  • If the crop develops obvious mould, slime, extensive decay or an abnormal sour or musty smell, discard it.
  • Harvest before the grass becomes tall, coarse and increasingly fibrous.

Harvest & Storage

For the freshest barley grass, harvest as close as practical to the time of use.

Cut the blades just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp knife. Do not harvest the roots or growing medium.

If harvested grass needs to be stored, place it in a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly. Use while fresh and discard grass that becomes slimy, heavily wilted, discoloured or develops an abnormal smell.

Food Safety

Barley grass is commonly consumed fresh or juiced, so clean growing and handling practices are important.

Use clean trays, utensils and drinking-quality water throughout the growing process. Avoid waterlogged conditions, wash harvested blades thoroughly under cool running drinking-quality water before preparation and use clean equipment during harvesting.

Discard any crop showing obvious mould, slime, decay or an unpleasant smell.
