Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Lemon Balm Microgreen Seeds

Grow aromatic lemon balm microgreens with tiny green leaves and a clean lemon-citrus flavour. A slow-growing specialty micro herb for desserts, drinks, salads and garnishes, with mature herb growing as an additional use.

Description

Lemon Balm Microgreen Seeds for Fresh Citrus Flavour

Lemon Balm Microgreen Seeds produce an aromatic specialty micro herb with fresh green foliage, a distinctive lemon fragrance and a clean citrus-herbal flavour. Unlike fast crops such as broccoli or radish, Lemon Balm develops slowly, rewarding patient growers with a highly aromatic microgreen that offers something quite different in the kitchen.

The small seeds germinate gradually and the crop becomes increasingly fragrant as its first textured true leaves develop. Allow approximately 24–30 days from sowing to harvest, depending on temperature, light and preferred harvest stage.

Fresh Lemon Flavour & Aromatic True Leaves

Lemon Balm microgreens have a noticeable lemon-citrus flavour with mild herbal sweetness and subtle mint-like notes. Their refreshing flavour and delicate texture make them particularly useful where stronger peppery microgreens could overpower a dish.

Use freshly harvested Lemon Balm microgreens with fruit, desserts, yoghurt and salads, or as a fresh garnish for cakes, drinks and plated desserts. They can also add a fresh citrus note to dressings, sauces and savoury dishes.

A Slow-Growing Specialty Micro Herb

Lemon Balm seed is small and should be spread evenly over a fine, consistently moist growing medium. No pre-soaking is required. The seed should remain at or very close to the surface because access to light helps support germination.

A fine medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium works well for the small seed. Maintain steady surface moisture during germination, then switch to bottom watering once the roots are sufficiently established.

Light During Germination

Unlike many fast microgreens that are placed beneath an opaque blackout cover, Lemon Balm benefits from light during germination. A clear humidity dome can be useful for slowing surface drying while still allowing light to reach the seed.

Once established, provide bright light and good airflow. Allowing the first small, textured true leaves to develop produces the characteristic Lemon Balm appearance and stronger citrus aroma.

Grow Lemon Balm Beyond the Microgreen Stage

The same seed can also be grown into mature Lemon Balm herbs. At wider spacing, the plants develop into bushy perennial herbs with aromatic green foliage that can be harvested repeatedly.

For mature herb production rather than dense microgreen trays, see our Lemon Balm Herb Seeds growing information.

How to Grow Lemon Balm Microgreens

Lemon Balm is a slow-growing specialty microgreen with a fresh lemon aroma and delicate textured foliage. It requires no pre-soaking and is best allowed to develop its first true leaves before harvest.

What You Need

  • Lemon Balm Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another fine microgreen growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • Optional clear humidity dome
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, start with approximately:

10–15g dry seed per tray

Lemon Balm seed is small, with approximately 1,500–2,300 seeds per gram.

Spread the seed thinly and as evenly as possible across the growing surface. Avoid concentrated patches because Lemon Balm remains in the tray considerably longer than fast-growing microgreens and needs adequate airflow as its foliage develops.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow Lemon Balm seed dry.

The small seeds become more difficult to distribute evenly when wet.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse trays, covers and growing tools.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another suitable fine-textured medium.
  3. Moisten before sowing. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The surface should be consistently damp without being saturated.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 10–15g for a standard 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Surface sow. Distribute the seed as evenly as possible over the growing surface.
  6. Press gently. Ensure good contact between the tiny seed and moist growing medium.
  7. Do not bury deeply. Leave the seed exposed or apply only a very light dusting of fine vermiculite if required.
  8. Mist carefully. Use a very fine spray to avoid washing the small seeds into clusters.
  9. Provide light during germination. Place the tray in a bright position away from harsh direct sunlight or beneath suitable grow lights.
  10. Use a clear humidity dome if needed. This can help reduce surface drying while still allowing light to reach the seed.
  11. Check moisture regularly. Lemon Balm germinates slowly, so maintaining steady surface moisture is important.
  12. Remove the humidity dome as seedlings establish. Increase airflow once germination is well underway.
  13. Bottom water once roots establish. Switch primarily to watering from below as the crop develops.

Blackout

No conventional dark blackout is recommended.

Lemon Balm seed benefits from access to light during germination.

Rather than using an opaque blackout tray:

  • surface sow the seed;
  • press it gently into the moist medium;
  • provide light from sowing;
  • use a clear humidity dome if moisture retention is needed; and
  • remove or ventilate the dome regularly once germination begins.

Heavy weighting is unnecessary.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Some seedlings may take longer under cooler or less favourable conditions.

Lemon Balm naturally germinates more slowly and less uniformly than crops such as broccoli or radish.

Do not discard a tray simply because emergence is gradual.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

This range is well suited to Lemon Balm germination and early growth.

Avoid excessive heat combined with saturated growing media or stagnant humidity.

Light

Lemon Balm should receive light during germination and stronger light as the seedlings establish.

Provide:

  • bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • consistent daily light;
  • good airflow; and
  • protection from excessive heat.

The initial cotyledons are small. As the crop develops, the first textured, mint-like true leaves begin to appear and the characteristic lemon aroma becomes stronger.

Watering

During germination:

  • use a fine mist when required;
  • keep the seed surface consistently moist;
  • do not allow repeated drying;
  • avoid flooding the tiny seeds; and
  • avoid saturated growing media.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

When bottom watering:

  • add a shallow amount of water to the lower tray;
  • allow the growing medium to absorb the moisture;
  • check moisture before watering again;
  • avoid permanent standing water; and
  • maintain good airflow around the foliage.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use approximately 10–15g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Do not pre-soak.
  • Surface sow the seed.
  • Do not bury deeply.
  • Provide light during germination.
  • Do not use a prolonged opaque blackout.
  • Maintain consistent surface moisture.
  • Use a clear humidity dome if required.
  • Germinate at approximately 18–22°C.
  • Expect gradual and sometimes uneven emergence.
  • Provide good airflow as the crop develops.
  • Bottom water once roots establish.
  • Allow the first true leaves to develop before harvest.

Common Problems

Slow or Uneven Germination

Lemon Balm is naturally a slow microgreen.

If emergence is patchy:

  • allow more time;
  • check that the surface has not dried;
  • maintain approximately 18–22°C;
  • ensure the seed is not buried deeply; and
  • make sure germinating seed receives light.

Seedlings Stretching

Weak or elongated seedlings usually need stronger light.

Move established seedlings closer to an appropriate grow light or into brighter indirect natural light.

Excess Moisture

Because Lemon Balm remains in the tray for up to a month, persistently wet conditions can cause problems.

Maintain drainage and airflow and avoid keeping the medium permanently saturated.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs may occasionally be mistaken for mould.

Healthy root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly;
  • become more noticeable as roots dry slightly; and
  • become less visible immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between seedlings;
  • form web-like patches;
  • remain obvious after watering; or
  • occur with slime, decay or an unpleasant smell.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

24–30 days from sowing

Lemon Balm is best allowed to develop some of its characteristic textured true foliage rather than being harvested immediately at the cotyledon stage.

Look for:

  • fresh green foliage;
  • upright healthy seedlings;
  • developing textured true leaves;
  • a noticeable lemon aroma; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium with clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before storage, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Culinary Use

Fresh Lemon Balm microgreens work particularly well with:

  • fruit;
  • yoghurt;
  • desserts;
  • cakes;
  • salads;
  • cold drinks;
  • dressings;
  • sauces; and
  • fresh garnishes.

Add them near the end of preparation or immediately before serving to preserve their fresh lemon aroma and delicate texture.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain:

  • consistent but controlled moisture;
  • good drainage;
  • adequate airflow;
  • clean harvesting tools; and
  • prompt refrigeration after harvest.

Discard crops showing visible mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration or an unpleasant smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
