Lemon Balm Herb Seeds for Fresh Lemon-Scented Leaves
Lemon Balm Herb Seeds grow into an aromatic perennial herb with soft green leaves and a distinctive fresh lemon fragrance. A member of the mint family, Lemon Balm is useful in kitchen gardens for herbal teas, chilled drinks, salads, desserts, fruit dishes, sauces and fresh garnishes.
The leaves combine bright citrus notes with a mild herbal and mint-like character. Harvest them fresh as required, or dry healthy foliage for later use in herbal infusions and culinary blends.
Hardy Perennial Herb for Beds & Containers
Lemon Balm forms a vigorous leafy clump and can return for multiple seasons once established. Plants perform well in full sun to partial shade and prefer fertile, moist but freely draining soil.
In hotter Australian conditions, some afternoon shade can help protect foliage from excessive heat and drying. Because Lemon Balm can spread and self-seed, container growing is a practical option where you want to keep the plant contained.
Lemon Balm vs Mint
Lemon Balm has a bright lemon fragrance with a mild mint-like background, making it particularly useful for teas, drinks, desserts and fresh garnishes. For a cooler, more traditional mint flavour, see our Mint Herb Seeds.
Both are hardy perennial herbs and respond well to regular harvesting, although Lemon Balm is generally more citrus-forward in flavour and aroma.
Grow Fresh Leaves for Repeated Harvests
Lemon Balm seed is very fine and should be surface sown or covered only lightly. Raise seedlings in trays or pots for reliable establishment, then transplant once they are large enough to handle.
Begin light harvesting once plants are well established, generally from around 60–70 days after sowing. Cut young stems and leaves regularly to encourage fresh, bushy growth.
Manage Vigorous Growth
Established Lemon Balm can expand into broad clumps and may self-seed if flowers are allowed to mature. Regular harvesting, removing unwanted flower stems and growing plants in containers are useful ways to keep growth manageable.
