Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Green Basil Microgreen Seeds – Torino

Grow sweet, aromatic Torino basil microgreens with fresh green stems and leaves for salads, pesto and garnishes. Also suited to mature herb growing, with microgreens typically ready in around 12–18 days.

Description

Green Basil Microgreen Seeds – Sweet Torino Basil

Green Basil Microgreen Seeds produce tender, vivid green shoots with the fresh, sweet and aromatic flavour associated with classic basil. OzSprout's Torino basil is a sweet Genovese-type basil well suited to tray-grown microgreens as well as growing into full-sized culinary herb plants.

Basil grows more slowly than fast microgreens such as broccoli and radish, but the additional growing time produces soft green shoots with an intense fresh-basil aroma. Under suitable warm conditions, Torino basil microgreens are generally ready to harvest in approximately 12–18 days.

Sweet Basil Flavour for Fresh Culinary Use

Torino basil microgreens have a sweet, herbaceous and highly aromatic flavour with a mild peppery finish. Their tender texture makes them particularly useful in dishes where fresh basil is already a natural match.

Add them to salads, pasta, pizza, bruschetta, sandwiches, wraps and tomato dishes, or use them as a fresh garnish with mozzarella, eggs and roasted vegetables. They can also be blended into pesto and other fresh sauces. For maximum aroma and texture, use the microgreens fresh or add them just before serving.

If you want to add stronger colour contrast to basil microgreen mixes, try Purple Basil Microgreen Seeds alongside Torino.

Mucilaginous Seed Grown Without Pre-Soaking

Basil seed naturally develops a clear gel-like coating when wet. For this reason, Torino Basil Microgreen Seeds should be sown dry without pre-soaking so they can be spread evenly before the mucilage develops.

Sow onto a fine, evenly moist growing medium such as coco fibre, cover during early germination, then move the established seedlings into good light with adequate airflow. Bottom watering is preferable once the roots are established.

Also Suitable for Baby Leaf & Mature Basil

Torino basil can also be grown beyond the microgreen stage. Sow less densely for baby leaves, or raise individual plants in pots, containers or garden beds for mature culinary basil.

Mature plants produce aromatic leaves suited to pesto, pasta, salads, sauces and fresh garnishes, and can also develop edible basil flowers when allowed to flower.

For Home & Regular Microgreen Growing

OzSprout Green Basil – Torino is available from 1g to 500g, with pack sizes suited to occasional home trays through to regular microgreen production.

Because basil seed is fine and mucilaginous, even sowing, warm germination conditions, careful moisture management and good airflow are particularly important for producing a uniform crop.

How to Grow Green Basil Microgreens

Green Torino basil is a slower-growing herb microgreen with fine, mucilaginous seed. It should be sown dry rather than pre-soaked, then kept evenly moist during germination before being moved into good light.

If you are new to tray growing, see the OzSprout How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide for the general microgreen process.

What You Need

  • Green Basil – Torino Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow microgreen tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix, soil-based microgreen mix or another suitable fine growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • An unweighted blackout cover or second tray
  • Bright natural light or a suitable grow light

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

10–12g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed as evenly as possible across the growing surface.

Basil seed is fine and becomes sticky once wet, so break up any dense patches before misting.

Avoid excessive overcrowding, which can hold moisture around the seedlings and restrict airflow.

Pre-Soak

Do not pre-soak.

Torino basil seed is mucilaginous and develops a clear gelatinous coating after contact with water.

Pre-soaking causes the seeds to stick together and makes even sowing difficult.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the growing tray, lower tray, blackout cover and tools.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable fine medium.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be damp throughout without being saturated.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 10–12g of dry seed for a 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Sow evenly. Broadcast the dry seed across the surface and correct any dense patches before watering.
  6. Press gently. Lightly press the seed against the growing medium to improve seed-to-medium contact. Do not bury deeply.
  7. Mist carefully. Apply a fine mist of clean water without washing the seed into clumps.
  8. Allow mucilage to develop. A clear gel-like coating will form around the seeds after wetting. This is normal.
  9. Cover the tray. Place an unweighted blackout cover or second tray over the crop for approximately 4–7 days.
  10. Check moisture regularly. Mist lightly only when the surface actually requires additional moisture.
  11. Move into light. Once germination is well established and the seedlings are beginning to push upward, remove the cover and move the tray into bright natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  12. Maintain airflow. Provide gentle airflow around the developing crop.
  13. Bottom water once established. When roots have developed through the growing medium, switch primarily to watering from below.

Blackout

Allow approximately:

4–7 days

Use an unweighted blackout cover or second tray.

Heavy weighting is not required for basil.

The purpose is to provide a covered germination period while the seedlings establish, not to apply substantial pressure.

Remove the cover once the majority of seedlings are established and beginning to push upward.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

4–7 days

Torino basil generally germinates more slowly than fast-growing brassicas.

Warm, stable conditions encourage more consistent emergence, while cool temperatures can slow germination considerably.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

20–24°C

Basil is a warm-season crop and generally prefers warmer germination conditions than crops such as broccoli or kale.

Avoid excessive heat combined with persistently wet conditions and poor airflow.

Light & Airflow

Once uncovered:

  • provide bright natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain consistent light each day;
  • provide good airflow around the canopy;
  • avoid excessive heat; and
  • minimise prolonged wetting of established foliage.

Good light encourages compact growth and strong green colour.

Watering

During early germination, mist carefully when needed to prevent the seed surface from drying completely.

Because basil mucilage naturally retains moisture around each seed, avoid repeatedly saturating an already moist tray.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

When bottom watering:

  • add a shallow amount of water to the lower tray;
  • allow the growing medium to absorb moisture from below;
  • check the medium before adding more water;
  • do not leave the tray permanently standing in deep water; and
  • minimise repeated wetting of the developing canopy.

Mucilage

Basil seed naturally forms a clear gelatinous coating after contact with water.

This is normal and should not be confused with mould.

Mucilage generally:

  • forms directly around individual seeds;
  • appears shortly after watering;
  • is clear to translucent; and
  • helps retain moisture around the seed.

Excessive surface watering can cause neighbouring mucilage layers to merge and create an unnecessarily wet seed layer.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not pre-soak.
  • Sow the seed while dry.
  • Use approximately 10–12g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Spread the seed evenly before misting.
  • Avoid dense clumps.
  • Use a fine growing medium.
  • Maintain warm conditions during germination.
  • Keep the surface moist rather than saturated.
  • Do not use heavy weighting.
  • Provide good light after germination.
  • Maintain airflow throughout the crop.
  • Bottom water once roots establish.
  • Be patient with slower basil growth.

Common Problems

Torino basil is slower and more moisture-sensitive than many fast-growing microgreens.

Watch for:

  • slow germination in cool conditions;
  • uneven patches caused by clumped seed;
  • persistently wet mucilage around dense areas;
  • stretched seedlings from insufficient light;
  • weak growth from prolonged blackout;
  • damping-off associated with excessive moisture and poor airflow; and
  • collapsed seedlings in waterlogged conditions.

For broader troubleshooting, see the OzSprout Microgreen Problems: Yellow, Leggy, Wilting, Patchy or Falling Over guide.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

12–18 days from sowing

Look for:

  • fully opened cotyledons;
  • vivid green colour;
  • healthy upright seedlings;
  • a strong basil aroma; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

For slightly larger microgreens, allow the first true leaves to begin developing.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Growing as Baby Leaf

For baby basil leaves:

  1. Sow less densely than for microgreens.
  2. Provide additional growing medium and root space.
  3. Continue growing beyond the cotyledon stage.
  4. Maintain good light and consistent moisture.
  5. Allow the first true leaves to develop.
  6. Harvest tender leaves at the preferred size.

Growing as a Mature Herb

Torino basil can also be grown into full-sized culinary plants.

For mature basil:

  1. Sow sparsely or raise individual seedlings.
  2. Transplant once established.
  3. Grow in pots, containers or garden beds.
  4. Provide a warm, sunny position.
  5. Use fertile, well-drained soil.
  6. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging.
  7. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage bushier growth.

Mature plants can also produce edible flowers.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow and avoid continuously saturated conditions.

At harvest:

  • use clean scissors or a harvesting knife;
  • cut above the growing medium;
  • minimise growing-medium and root material in the harvested crop; and
  • refrigerate promptly.

Discard crops showing visible mould, slime, decay, collapsed seedlings or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening the package to reduce the risk of condensation.
