Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Fenugreek Microgreen Seeds (Methi)

Grow aromatic fenugreek microgreens with Australian-origin Aroma seed, known for its distinctive mildly bitter, curry-like flavour. Also suited to sprouting, cooking, milling and growing mature methi leaves.

Description

Fenugreek Microgreen Seeds for Fresh Methi Greens

Fenugreek Microgreen Seeds produce distinctive tray-grown methi greens with pale green stems, fresh green cotyledons and an aromatic, earthy flavour with a characteristic mild bitterness. This Australian-grown seed is well suited to microgreen production and offers a stronger, more savoury flavour than mild crops such as broccoli or cabbage.

Fenugreek microgreens have a distinctive curry-like, slightly bitter flavour that works particularly well with Indian and Middle Eastern-inspired dishes. Use the freshly cut greens in salads, wraps, eggs, grain bowls and sandwiches, or as a finishing garnish for curries, dals, soups and other savoury dishes.

Tray-Grown Fenugreek Microgreens

For microgreen production, fenugreek is pre-soaked for approximately 6–8 hours before being spread evenly across a moist growing medium. The crop then benefits from approximately 3–4 days of covered germination before being moved into good light.

Fenugreek grows well in coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or a suitable soil-and-coco blend. Once the roots are established, bottom watering helps maintain even moisture while reducing unnecessary wetting of the foliage. A suitable coco fibre growing medium can be used for tray production.

Under suitable conditions, fenugreek microgreens are generally ready to harvest in approximately 8–12 days, once the cotyledons have opened and the crop has developed good green colour and its characteristic methi aroma.

Fresh Methi Flavour for Savoury Dishes

The young greens have an aromatic, earthy character with mild bitterness that becomes particularly useful as a contrast to richer foods. They work well with curries, lentil dishes, eggs, salads, wraps, rice dishes, soups and savoury garnishes.

Fenugreek can also be grown beyond the microgreen stage for mature methi leaves. Sow much less densely and provide additional root space if growing it as a full-size culinary herb.

Microgreen Packs for Home & Commercial Growing

OzSprout Fenugreek Microgreen Seeds are available from 250g through to 20kg, with pack sizes suited to home growers, regular tray production, market gardeners and commercial microgreen growers.

If your main goal is to grow short jar-grown fenugreek sprouts rather than tray-grown microgreens, use the separate Fenugreek Sprouting Seeds product and its sprout-specific growing instructions.

How to Grow Fenugreek Microgreens

Fenugreek is a relatively fast, substantial microgreen that is grown in trays rather than jars. Pre-soaking helps the seed absorb moisture before sowing, while several days of covered germination encourage even root and shoot establishment.

If you are new to tray growing, see the OzSprout How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide for the general microgreen process.

What You Need

  • Fenugreek Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow growing tray with drainage
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or a suitable soil-and-coco blend
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A clean container for soaking
  • A second tray or suitable blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or a suitable grow light

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

25g dry seed per tray

Measure the seed before soaking.

Avoid sowing fenugreek in thick overlapping piles. Excess density restricts airflow and can keep the seed layer unnecessarily wet.

Pre-Soak

Soak for approximately:

6–8 hours in cool water

  1. Measure the dry seed.
  2. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Place in a clean soaking container.
  4. Cover generously with clean water.
  5. Soak for approximately 6–8 hours.
  6. Drain thoroughly before sowing.

Fenugreek absorbs water readily, so extended soaking is unnecessary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the growing tray, lower tray, soaking container and blackout cover before starting.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium. Level it gently without heavily compacting it.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly before sowing. The medium should be damp throughout but not saturated.
  4. Soak the seed. Rinse and soak the measured seed for approximately 6–8 hours, then drain thoroughly.
  5. Sow evenly. Spread approximately 25g dry-seed equivalent evenly across a 25 × 50cm tray in a dense but mostly single layer.
  6. Press gently. Lightly press the seed against the growing medium to improve seed-to-medium contact.
  7. Cover the tray. Place another tray or suitable blackout cover over the crop for approximately 3–4 days.
  8. Check moisture daily. Keep the medium evenly moist without saturating it. Do not water automatically if sufficient moisture is already present.
  9. Check establishment. Germination normally becomes well established within approximately 2–3 days.
  10. Move into light. Once seedlings are pushing strongly upward and the covered period is complete, remove the cover and move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  11. Maintain airflow. Provide good airflow around the crop as the canopy develops.
  12. Bottom water once established. When roots have developed through the growing medium, switch primarily to watering from below.

Blackout

Keep covered for approximately:

3–4 days

Fenugreek benefits from a short covered germination period while the root system establishes.

Heavy weighting is not necessary. A second tray or normal blackout cover is sufficient.

Once the seedlings are pushing strongly upward, remove the cover and provide good light.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

2–3 days

Fenugreek usually germinates quickly after soaking when moisture and temperature are suitable.

Do not keep the crop excessively wet simply because some individual seeds are slower than others.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

This range provides suitable conditions for germination and steady microgreen growth.

Avoid combining high temperatures with excessive moisture and poor airflow, as this can increase crop problems.

Light & Airflow

After the covered period:

  • provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain consistent light each day;
  • allow good airflow around the canopy;
  • avoid excessive heat; and
  • do not allow dense foliage to remain continually wet.

Pale seedlings will progressively turn green after exposure to light.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist rather than saturated.

During early establishment, mist or gently surface-water only when necessary.

Once the roots have established, bottom watering is preferable because it directs moisture toward the root zone while helping keep foliage drier.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Avoid:

  • permanently standing water;
  • repeatedly soaking the foliage;
  • waterlogged growing medium; and
  • stagnant, humid conditions.

Tips for Best Results

  • Measure the seed before soaking.
  • Pre-soak for approximately 6–8 hours.
  • Drain thoroughly before sowing.
  • Spread the seed evenly rather than in overlapping piles.
  • Keep the growing medium moist, not saturated.
  • Use a short 3–4 day covered germination period.
  • Do not apply heavy weighting.
  • Maintain good drainage and airflow.
  • Move into good light once established.
  • Switch to bottom watering after the roots develop.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white growth close to healthy fenugreek roots may be normal root hairs.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly distributed; and
  • often become less visible when wet.

Possible mould is more likely to spread irregularly across seeds or growing medium and may occur with slime, decay, collapsed seedlings or an abnormal smell.

If you are unsure, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Harvest & Storage

Fenugreek microgreens are generally ready approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

Look for:

  • open cotyledons;
  • healthy green colour;
  • upright stems;
  • a fresh methi aroma; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

Cut the microgreens cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If the greens are washed before refrigeration, drain and dry them thoroughly first.

Growing as Mature Methi

Fenugreek can also be grown beyond the microgreen stage for fresh mature methi leaves.

For mature plants:

  1. Sow much less densely than for microgreens.
  2. Provide greater growing-medium depth and root space.
  3. Grow in pots or garden beds.
  4. Maintain suitable moisture and light.
  5. Harvest tender leaves and stems as required.

This method is distinct from densely sown microgreen production.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, soaking containers, growing media, water and harvesting equipment.

Good drainage and airflow are especially important when growing dense fenugreek trays.

Avoid continuously saturated growing conditions.

At harvest:

  • use clean scissors or a harvesting knife;
  • cut above the growing medium;
  • keep roots and growing medium out of the harvested crop; and
  • refrigerate promptly.

Discard any crop showing obvious mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration, collapsed seedlings or an unpleasant smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening the package to reduce the risk of condensation.
