Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Chervil Microgreen Seeds

Grow delicate chervil microgreens with fine green foliage and a mild parsley flavour finished with subtle anise notes. A distinctive specialty micro herb for garnishes, salads, eggs, seafood and savoury dishes.

Description

Chervil Microgreen Seeds for Delicate French Herb Flavour

Chervil Microgreen Seeds produce elegant green micro herbs with slender stems and finely divided, parsley-like foliage. Often called French parsley, chervil has a delicate fresh flavour combining mild parsley character with subtle anise and fennel-like notes.

Chervil is a slower specialty crop than broccoli, radish or mustard. Its slender seeds germinate gradually, but the extra growing time produces distinctive lacy true leaves and a refined flavour particularly suited to fresh culinary use.

Delicate Flavour for Fresh Culinary Use

Chervil microgreens have a mild, fresh and lightly sweet herbal flavour with subtle anise notes. Their flavour is gentler than parsley and is easily lost during prolonged cooking, making them particularly useful as a finishing micro herb.

Use freshly harvested chervil with salads, eggs, potatoes, seafood, chicken and vegetables, or scatter it over soups and sauces immediately before serving. The fine green foliage also makes an attractive garnish for plated dishes.

A Specialty Microgreen Grown to the True-Leaf Stage

Chervil becomes particularly distinctive once its first finely divided true leaves develop. Rather than harvesting immediately after the cotyledons open, allowing additional growing time produces the characteristic feathery appearance and fuller chervil aroma valued as a culinary micro herb.

The crop prefers relatively cool conditions, steady moisture and good airflow. Sow close to the surface on a fine growing medium such as coco fibre or seed-raising mix and avoid burying the seed deeply.

Light During Germination

Unlike many fast-growing microgreens that are kept in darkness for several days, chervil seed benefits from access to light during germination. A prolonged dark blackout or heavy weighted cover is therefore unnecessary.

A clear humidity cover can be useful for maintaining surface moisture during the comparatively slow germination period while still allowing light to reach the seed. Once established, provide brighter light, good airflow and bottom watering.

Also Suitable for Mature Chervil

The same seed can also be grown beyond the microgreen stage for baby leaves or mature culinary chervil. Mature plants prefer cool conditions and consistently moist, well-drained soil and can be grown in containers or garden beds.

How to Grow Chervil Microgreens

Chervil is a slower-growing specialty micro herb that is best allowed to develop its characteristic finely divided true leaves. It prefers cooler conditions than many common microgreens and requires steady surface moisture during its comparatively long germination period.

For general tray-growing principles, see How to Grow Microgreens at Home.

What You Need

  • Chervil Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another fine microgreen medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • Optional clear humidity dome
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, start with approximately:

14–20g dry seed per tray

Chervil seed is long, narrow and relatively lightweight.

Spread it evenly rather than creating thick overlapping patches. A moderately open canopy provides room for the delicate true leaves to develop and improves airflow.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow the seed dry.

Pre-soaking is unnecessary and makes the slender seeds more difficult to distribute evenly.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean the equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the trays, humidity cover and tools.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another suitable fine-textured medium.
  3. Moisten before sowing. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be consistently damp without being saturated.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 14–20g for a 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Sow close to the surface. Spread the seed evenly and avoid thick clusters.
  6. Press gently. Ensure good contact with the moist growing medium.
  7. Cover only very lightly if required. Do not bury the seed deeply.
  8. Mist gently. Use a fine spray so the seed is not washed into piles.
  9. Provide light during germination. Place the tray in a bright position away from excessive heat or harsh direct sunlight.
  10. Use a clear humidity cover if needed. This can slow surface drying while still allowing light to reach the seed.
  11. Ventilate regularly. Avoid creating stagnant, continuously wet conditions beneath the cover.
  12. Maintain surface moisture. Check regularly during the relatively long germination period.
  13. Remove the humidity cover after establishment. Once seedlings are emerging well, provide unrestricted airflow.
  14. Bottom water once roots establish. Switch primarily to watering from below as the crop develops.

Blackout

No prolonged dark blackout is recommended.

Chervil seed benefits from light during germination.

Avoid:

  • prolonged opaque blackout;
  • heavy weighting;
  • deep burial; and
  • keeping germinating seed in complete darkness for several days.

A clear humidity dome can be used temporarily where needed to help maintain consistent surface moisture.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Around 10–14 days is common under suitable conditions, although emergence can vary with temperature, seed lot and growing conditions.

Chervil is naturally slower than broccoli, radish and mustard, so gradual emergence is not necessarily a sign that the tray has failed.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

16–21°C

Chervil is a cool-season herb and generally performs better under moderate conditions than in excessive heat.

Hot, dry conditions can stress the plants and encourage premature flowering if they are allowed to grow beyond the microgreen stage.

Light & Airflow

Provide light from germination onward.

Once the crop is established:

  • provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain good airflow;
  • rotate the tray if needed for even development;
  • avoid excessive heat; and
  • allow the foliage space to develop.

The first finely divided true leaves give chervil its characteristic parsley-like appearance.

Watering

During germination, careful surface moisture is important.

  • Mist gently when required.
  • Do not allow the surface to dry completely.
  • Avoid flooding the seeds into clusters.
  • Keep the medium damp rather than saturated.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is generally preferable.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

When bottom watering:

  • add a shallow amount of water to the lower tray;
  • allow the growing medium to absorb the moisture;
  • check the medium before watering again;
  • avoid permanent standing water; and
  • maintain airflow around the foliage.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use approximately 14–20g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Do not pre-soak.
  • Sow close to the surface.
  • Avoid deep burial.
  • Provide light during germination.
  • Do not use a prolonged dark blackout.
  • Keep the surface consistently moist while germinating.
  • Use a clear humidity cover only when needed.
  • Maintain approximately 16–21°C.
  • Provide good airflow.
  • Bottom water once roots establish.
  • Allow the first true leaves to develop before harvesting.

Common Problems

Chervil's slower germination makes moisture management particularly important.

Watch for:

  • surface drying before germination;
  • uneven emergence;
  • seeds being washed into clusters;
  • excessive moisture beneath humidity covers;
  • stretched seedlings from inadequate light;
  • weak growth in excessive heat; and
  • damping-off where airflow is poor.

For general troubleshooting, see Microgreen Problems: Yellow, Leggy, Wilting, Patchy or Falling Over.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs can sometimes be mistaken for fungal growth.

Healthy root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly around the root zone; and
  • become less noticeable after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between seedlings or across the growing medium and may occur with slime, decay, discolouration or an abnormal smell.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

18–25 days from sowing

Slower crops may take longer under cool conditions.

For the characteristic chervil appearance and flavour, allow the first finely divided true leaves to develop.

Look for:

  • healthy green foliage;
  • upright delicate stems;
  • developing feathery true leaves;
  • a noticeable fresh chervil aroma; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium with clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. Avoid crushing or tightly packing the delicate foliage.

Culinary Use

Chervil has a delicate parsley-like flavour with subtle anise notes.

Use it fresh with:

  • eggs;
  • seafood;
  • chicken;
  • potatoes;
  • salads;
  • vegetables;
  • soups;
  • sauces; and
  • plated garnishes.

Because chervil's flavour is delicate, add it near the end of cooking or immediately before serving rather than subjecting it to prolonged heat.

Growing Beyond the Microgreen Stage

Chervil can also be grown for baby leaves or as a mature culinary herb.

For mature plants:

  1. Sow shallowly.
  2. Maintain consistent moisture.
  3. Grow under cool to moderate conditions.
  4. Provide sun to partial shade.
  5. Thin seedlings to provide more space.
  6. Harvest tender leaves before flowering for the best texture and flavour.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain:

  • good drainage;
  • appropriate moisture levels;
  • good airflow;
  • clean harvesting tools; and
  • prompt refrigeration after harvest.

Discard any crop showing visible mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
