Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds

Grow fast buckwheat microgreens with tender pink-red stems, broad green leaves and a mild, slightly tangy flavour. Australian Blonde kernels suited to home trays and larger-volume microgreen growing.

Description

Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds – Hulled Groats for Growing

Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds are hulled buckwheat groats selected for growing tender tray-grown microgreens. After soaking and germination, they develop pale to pink-red stems topped with broad, fresh green cotyledons, creating a distinctive crop with more substantial leaves than many fine-seeded microgreens.

Buckwheat establishes quickly and can generally be harvested in approximately 7–12 days. The young shoots have a mild, fresh flavour with lightly tangy and subtle nutty notes, making them suitable for salads, wraps, bowls and colourful garnishes.

Hulled Buckwheat Groats for Tray-Grown Microgreens

Unlike whole unhulled buckwheat seed, these groats have had the tough outer hull removed. For microgreen growing, they are soaked briefly, drained thoroughly and spread evenly across a moist growing medium.

A short covered germination period helps the roots establish before the crop is moved into good light. A drainable microgreen grow tray is well suited to this method, allowing excess moisture to drain and making bottom watering practical once the roots are established.

Tender Pink-Stemmed Greens with Broad Leaves

Buckwheat microgreens develop broad, soft cotyledons and succulent stems that may show attractive pink to reddish colouring. Their mild flavour provides freshness and texture without the stronger heat of radish or mustard microgreens.

Use freshly harvested buckwheat microgreens in salads, sandwiches, wraps, grain bowls and vegetable dishes, or combine them after harvest with stronger microgreens for contrasting flavour and colour.

Microgreen Growing vs Short Buckwheat Sprouts

This product is specifically positioned for tray-grown buckwheat microgreens, where the seedlings are grown on a medium and harvested above the surface after the cotyledons have opened.

If you want short buckwheat sprouts grown primarily by soaking, rinsing and draining rather than tray growing, see the separate Buckwheat Sprouting Kernels product and its sprout-specific instructions.

How to Grow Buckwheat Microgreens

Buckwheat microgreens can be grown from hulled groats by briefly soaking them, spreading them evenly over a moist growing medium and allowing them to establish under cover before moving the crop into light.

If you are new to tray growing, see the OzSprout How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide for the general process.

What You Need

  • Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds – Hulled Groats
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium
  • A clean soaking container
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A second tray or suitable blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

90–120g dry groats per tray

Measure the groats before soaking.

Spread them in a dense but even layer after soaking and avoid thick piles or excessive overlapping.

Pre-Soak

Soak for approximately:

4–6 hours

  1. Measure the dry groats.
  2. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Cover generously with cool, clean water.
  4. Soak for approximately 4–6 hours.
  5. Drain completely.
  6. Allow excess water to drain before sowing.

Avoid excessively long soaking periods.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the tray, lower tray, soaking container and cover.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable medium.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be damp but not saturated.
  4. Soak the groats. Pre-soak for approximately 4–6 hours and drain thoroughly.
  5. Sow evenly. Spread approximately 90–120g dry-groat equivalent across a 25 × 50cm tray.
  6. Improve contact. Press gently so the groats make good contact with the growing surface.
  7. Cover the tray. Place another tray or suitable blackout cover over the crop.
  8. Keep covered for approximately 3–4 days. Light pressure from the upper tray can help maintain seed-to-medium contact.
  9. Check moisture daily. Keep the growing medium evenly moist without leaving the groats sitting in excess water.
  10. Move into light. Once most seedlings have established and are beginning to push upward, remove the cover.
  11. Maintain airflow. Provide good airflow around the crop as the broad cotyledons open.
  12. Bottom water once established. Once the roots are developed, switch primarily to watering from below.

Blackout

Keep the crop covered for approximately:

3–4 days

A second tray or blackout cover is sufficient.

Light pressure can help maintain good contact during early establishment, but heavy weighting is unnecessary.

Remove the cover once the seedlings are established and pushing upward strongly.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

2–4 days

Buckwheat generally establishes quickly after soaking.

Some variation between individual groats is normal.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

20–25°C

Moderately warm conditions encourage quick establishment.

Avoid combining excessive heat with saturated growing media or stagnant airflow.

Light & Airflow

Once uncovered:

  • provide bright natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain good airflow;
  • avoid excessively hot direct sunlight; and
  • rotate the tray if required for even growth.

The cotyledons may initially appear pale after covered growth and should green quickly after exposure to sufficient light.

Watering

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the medium consistently moist without leaving it saturated.

Avoid:

  • permanent standing water;
  • repeated heavy surface watering;
  • continually wet foliage; and
  • stagnant, humid conditions.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use approximately 90–120g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Pre-soak for approximately 4–6 hours.
  • Drain thoroughly before sowing.
  • Spread the groats evenly.
  • Avoid thick overlapping piles.
  • Maintain good contact with the growing medium.
  • Cover for approximately 3–4 days.
  • Avoid heavy weighting.
  • Provide good light after germination.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Bottom water once roots establish.
  • Harvest while the shoots remain tender.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs may develop around germinating buckwheat and can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly;
  • become more visible as the root zone dries slightly; and
  • become less obvious after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between groats or across the growing surface and may occur with slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

If you are unsure, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

7–12 days from sowing

Look for:

  • fully opened cotyledons;
  • healthy green leaves;
  • tender upright stems;
  • pink to reddish stem colouring; and
  • the preferred size and flavour.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Harvest when the foliage is relatively dry where practical.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Culinary Use

Buckwheat microgreens have broad, tender foliage with a mild, fresh flavour and subtle tangy and nutty notes.

Use them in:

  • salads;
  • sandwiches;
  • wraps;
  • bowls;
  • vegetable dishes;
  • mixed microgreen blends; and
  • garnishes.

Buckwheat greens naturally contain fagopyrins, so use them in normal culinary portions rather than unusually large quantities or concentrated daily juices.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, soaking containers, growing media, drinking-quality water and harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow throughout the crop.

Discard any tray showing visible mould, slime, decay, collapsed seedlings or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused groats sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening the package to reduce condensation.
