Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Buckwheat Sprouting Kernels

Grow fresh buckwheat sprouts in just 1–3 days with Australian-grown buckwheat sprouting kernels. Easy to grow at home, with bulk buckwheat sprouting seeds available across Australia.

Description

Buckwheat Sprouting Kernels for Quick, Tender Sprouts

Grow fresh buckwheat sprouts at home with our buckwheat sprouting kernels. Hulled buckwheat kernels germinate quickly, producing plump, tender sprouts with a mild nutty flavour and light crunch. They can be grown using a Glass Sprouting Jar, sprouting tray or suitable sprout bag and are generally ready to harvest in approximately 1–3 days.

These versatile kernels are also suitable for cooking, toasting and milling into buckwheat flour, making them useful both as a home-sprouting seed and as a pantry ingredient.

Despite its name, buckwheat is not a type of wheat or a true cereal grain. It is a pseudocereal with culinary uses similar to traditional grains.

Mild, Nutty Buckwheat Sprouts

Sprouted buckwheat kernels develop a tender, slightly chewy texture with a mild, pleasantly nutty flavour. Harvest them while the white root is still relatively short and the kernels remain plump and tender.

Buckwheat kernels naturally release starch and mucilage when soaked. Cloudy or slightly thick rinse water is therefore normal during the early stages, but thorough rinsing and drainage are particularly important.

Cook Buckwheat Kernels as a Whole Grain Alternative

Buckwheat kernels can also be cooked without sprouting. Simmer until tender and use them in breakfast porridge, grain bowls, salads, soups, casseroles and savoury side dishes.

The kernels can also be toasted before cooking for a deeper, nuttier flavour. Toasted buckwheat groats are commonly known as kasha and can be used in porridge and a variety of savoury dishes.

Mill Buckwheat Kernels into Flour

Dry buckwheat kernels can be milled into buckwheat flour using suitable grain-milling equipment. Buckwheat flour is traditionally used for pancakes, crêpes, blini, noodles, breads and other baked goods.

Short Sprouts vs Buckwheat Microgreens

This product is primarily intended for short buckwheat kernel sprouts harvested after approximately 1–3 days. If you want to grow broad green buckwheat shoots in trays, use Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds, which retain their natural hull and are better suited to microgreen production.

Home & Bulk Buckwheat Sprouting Kernels

OzSprout buckwheat sprouting kernels are available from 1kg through to 20kg bulk quantities for home sprouters, regular cooks, home millers, retailers, resellers and larger-volume users.

How to Sprout Buckwheat Kernels

Buckwheat kernels are among the quickest seeds to sprout. Unlike larger grains and legumes that are commonly soaked overnight, hulled buckwheat absorbs water rapidly and requires only a short soak.

A Glass Sprouting Jar, sprouting tray or suitable sprout bag can be used. If you are new to jar sprouting, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for an overview of the general method.

What You Need

  • Approximately ¼ cup / 4 tablespoons (40–45g) of buckwheat sprouting kernels for a 500ml jar
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and any utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the kernels: Add approximately ¼ cup / 4 tablespoons of dry buckwheat kernels to a 500ml sprouting jar.
  3. Pre-rinse thoroughly: Rinse the dry kernels several times with cool drinking-quality water.
  4. Soak briefly: Cover the kernels generously with cool water and soak for approximately 20–30 minutes. Do not soak overnight, as hulled buckwheat absorbs water quickly and can become overly soft or waterlogged.
  5. Rinse well after soaking: Drain the soaking water and rinse the kernels several times. Buckwheat naturally releases starch and mucilage, so the water may initially appear cloudy or slightly thick. Continue rinsing until it becomes substantially clearer.
  6. Drain thoroughly: Allow as much water as practical to escape, then position the jar at a downward angle so excess moisture can continue to drain while air circulates.
  7. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the kernels approximately 2–3 times each day. Do not leave standing water in the jar.
  8. Allow the roots to develop: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. Small white roots can begin appearing within approximately 24–48 hours.
  9. Harvest: Buckwheat sprouts are generally ready in approximately 1–3 days. Harvest while the kernels remain plump and tender and the white roots are still relatively short.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not soak buckwheat overnight.
  • Cloudy or slightly thick rinse water during the early stages is normal because buckwheat releases starch and mucilage.
  • Rinse thoroughly after the initial soak.
  • Drain very well after every rinse.
  • Avoid overcrowding the sprouting container.
  • Maintain good airflow and avoid standing water.
  • Harvest while the roots are relatively short rather than allowing the sprouts to develop into large green shoots.
  • Discard any batch that becomes slimy, shows obvious mould or decay, or develops an unpleasant sour, rotten or strongly musty smell.

Short Sprouts vs Green Buckwheat Shoots

These instructions are intended for short sprouts grown from hulled buckwheat kernels.

If you want to grow buckwheat into broad green microgreens in a tray, use Unhulled Buckwheat Microgreen Seeds and follow the separate tray-growing instructions for that product.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their smell, colour or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria, and careful home-growing practices cannot guarantee that sprouts will be bacteria-free.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.

Buckwheat sprouts and developing green buckwheat shoots naturally contain compounds called fagopyrins. Excessive consumption of buckwheat sprouts or greens may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight in susceptible people. This product is intended for short sprouts harvested at the young 1–3 day stage rather than for producing large green shoots.
