Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Brown Pea Sprouting Seeds – Maple Peas

Grow sweet, crunchy brown pea sprouts with Australian-grown seed. Also suitable for cooking, pea shoots, microgreens and mature plants, with bulk sizes available across Australia.

Description

Brown Pea Sprouting Seeds for Sweet, Crunchy Sprouts

Grow substantial, crunchy sprouts at home with our brown pea sprouting seeds. Brown Maple field peas produce firm young sprouts with a mild, earthy, slightly sweet and nutty pea flavour and are generally ready to harvest in approximately 2–4 days.

These large peas expand considerably after soaking and are well suited to growing in a glass sprouting jar or suitable sprouter. Regular rinsing, thorough drainage and good airflow help produce crisp, evenly developed sprouts.

Crunchy Brown Maple Pea Sprouts

Brown pea sprouts are larger and more substantial than delicate leafy sprouts such as alfalfa or clover. Their firm texture and familiar pea flavour work particularly well in salads, wraps, grain bowls, stir-fries, soups and other savoury meals.

Shorter sprouts generally provide the firmest texture and strongest fresh-pea character, making brown peas particularly useful when you want a hearty, crunchy sprout.

Create a Crunchy Pea, Chickpea & Lentil Sprout Mix

Brown peas combine particularly well with other large legumes for a substantial homemade sprout mix. Try them with Blue Pea Sprouting Seeds, Chickpea Sprouting Seeds and Red Lentil Sprouting Seeds.

These varieties have broadly compatible soaking and growing requirements and can be combined in the same jar. Keep the total dry seed quantity conservative because peas and chickpeas expand considerably after soaking, and always leave enough room for thorough drainage and airflow.

Brown Maple Field Peas

These brown or mottled Maple peas belong to Pisum sativum and are a traditional field-pea type. In addition to short jar-grown sprouts, the viable seed can also be grown for longer as pea shoots or planted through to maturity.

This product page is primarily focused on brown pea sprouts grown in a jar or sprouter, rather than tray-grown pea shoots.

Cook Brown Maple Peas

Brown peas do not need to be sprouted before use. The whole dried peas can also be soaked and thoroughly cooked until tender for soups, stews, casseroles, curries, savoury mash and other pulse-based dishes.

Whole dry peas generally benefit from soaking before cooking. Once tender, they can be served whole, mashed or incorporated into savoury fillings and other recipes. Dry peas can also be milled using suitable equipment to produce pea flour.

How to Grow Brown Pea Sprouts

Brown Maple peas are large sprouting seeds that expand considerably after soaking. Allow plenty of room in the jar and maintain thorough drainage and good airflow throughout growing.

What You Need

  • Approximately 5 tablespoons / around 60g of brown pea seed
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A sprouting lid or draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 5 tablespoons of brown peas to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged, split or deteriorated peas.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse thoroughly, cover generously with clean drinking-quality water and soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse again and allow the peas to drain completely.
  5. Position for drainage: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess water can escape and air can circulate.
  6. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times daily.
  7. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. A growing temperature of approximately 10–22°C is suitable.
  8. Watch for germination: Small white roots should begin emerging as the peas germinate.
  9. Harvest: Brown pea sprouts are generally ready in approximately 2–4 days, depending on temperature and your preferred sprout length.

Make a Crunchy Legume Sprout Mix

Brown peas can also be grown together with other large sprouting legumes such as blue peas, chickpeas and whole lentils.

A practical starting mix for a 500ml jar is:

  • 1 tablespoon brown peas
  • 1 tablespoon chickpeas
  • 1 tablespoon whole red lentils

Or substitute some of the brown peas with blue or white peas to vary the flavour and texture.

Soak the mixed seed for approximately 8–12 hours, drain thoroughly, then rinse and drain approximately 2–3 times each day.

Because peas and chickpeas expand considerably, keep the total dry seed quantity modest rather than using a full single-variety serving of each seed.

Begin checking the mix from around day 3 and harvest once all varieties have germinated well and reached the texture you prefer.

Tips for Best Results

  • Peas expand considerably after soaking, so avoid overcrowding.
  • Drain completely after every rinse.
  • Do not leave standing water around the sprouts.
  • Maintain good airflow throughout germination.
  • Growing away from strong direct light helps keep the young shoots tender.
  • Short sprouts generally provide the firmest texture.
  • For mixed batches, keep the total seed quantity low enough to allow expansion and airflow.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop a sour, rotten or unusually musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Other Growing Uses

Brown Maple peas can also be grown beyond the short sprout stage as pea shoots or mature field peas.

Those methods use different sowing densities, growing media and harvest stages from the jar-sprouting method described here.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
