Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

White Linaria Edible Flower Seeds

White linaria edible flower seeds produce masses of delicate snapdragon-like blooms with a mild, lightly sweet flavour. Ideal for garnishes, borders, containers and cool-season colour.

Description

White Linaria Edible Flower Seeds for Delicate Culinary Blooms

White Linaria edible flower seeds produce masses of petite, snapdragon-like flowers on compact plants with fine green foliage. Also known as Moroccan toadflax or baby snapdragon, Linaria brings a light, airy appearance to edible gardens, borders, pots and mixed flower displays.

The small white flowers have a mild, delicately sweet flavour and are particularly useful when you want an edible garnish that adds visual detail without dominating a dish. Their miniature size makes them easy to scatter individually or use whole.

Edible White Flowers for Garnishes & Desserts

Fresh Linaria flowers can be used to decorate salads, cakes, desserts, cheese boards, canapés, platters and other plated dishes. Their delicate shape also works well floating on drinks or as a finishing detail on celebration cakes and other culinary presentations.

For the best appearance, harvest clean flowers when they are freshly opened and use them relatively soon after picking.

Compact Colour for Borders, Pots & Mass Plantings

Linaria is a cool-season annual with a compact, branching habit that works particularly well along garden edges, in rockeries, planter boxes, hanging baskets and mass plantings.

Planting several together creates a soft flowering display, while their fine stems and miniature blooms also make them suitable for small posies and delicate fresh arrangements.

The flowers attract visiting pollinators, making Linaria a useful addition to edible flower gardens and productive garden areas.

Easy to Grow from Fine Seed

Linaria seed is extremely small and requires light for germination, so it should be surface sown rather than buried. Press the seed gently into moist growing medium and keep the surface consistently moist while germination takes place.

Where a very light moisture-retaining covering is helpful, an extremely fine dusting of Vermiculite Growing Medium can be used without completely covering the seed from light.

Under suitable conditions, germination generally occurs in approximately 15–20 days.

Best Grown Through Cool to Mild Conditions

Linaria performs best in cool to mild weather with good light, well-drained soil and regular moisture during establishment.

In warmer Australian regions, autumn through winter is particularly suitable, while cooler climates generally achieve good results from spring sowings.

Established plants tolerate some light frost, but prolonged hot conditions can reduce flowering and eventually cause plants to decline.

Encourage a Longer Flowering Display

Regular harvesting and deadheading can help extend flowering. A light trim after the first major flush may encourage fresh branching and another display of flowers while conditions remain cool and favourable.

If you would like Linaria to self-seed naturally, leave selected flower stems to mature towards the end of the season.

How to Grow White Linaria Edible Flowers

Linaria can be direct sown where it is to flower or raised in trays, cells or small pots before transplanting.

Sowing Method

Linaria seeds are extremely small and require light during germination.

To raise seedlings:

  1. Fill trays, cells or small pots with a fine, free-draining seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
  3. Scatter the tiny seeds thinly across the surface.
  4. Gently press the seeds into contact with the moist growing medium.
  5. Do not cover them with a normal layer of soil.
  6. Mist gently or bottom-water so the seed is not displaced.
  7. Keep the surface consistently moist during germination.
  8. Place the tray in a bright position with cool-to-mild temperatures.
  9. Provide good airflow once seedlings emerge.
  10. Transplant once seedlings are established and large enough to handle.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare a fine, weed-free seedbed.
  2. Water beforehand if the soil is dry.
  3. Scatter the seed thinly over the surface.
  4. Press gently into the soil.
  5. Do not bury the seed.
  6. Water with a very gentle mist or fine rose.
  7. Maintain consistent surface moisture until seedlings establish.

Sowing Depth

Sow:

On the surface without covering

Linaria is a light-germinating seed.

Press the seed gently against the moist growing medium rather than burying it.

If additional moisture protection is needed, use only an extremely fine dusting of a suitable material so the seed remains exposed to light.

Best Sowing Season

Linaria is a cool-season flowering annual.

As a practical Australian guide:

  • Cool climates: early spring to early summer; autumn sowing may also be possible in sheltered areas
  • Temperate climates: autumn and early spring
  • Subtropical climates: autumn through winter
  • Tropical climates: coolest and driest months
  • Hot or arid climates: autumn through early spring, avoiding extreme summer heat

In mild climates, autumn sowing can provide winter and spring flowers.

In colder areas, spring sowing is generally more reliable.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

15–20 days

Aim for a germination temperature of approximately:

20–21°C

During germination:

  • Keep the surface consistently moist.
  • Do not allow the seed to dry completely.
  • Avoid waterlogging.
  • Provide light throughout germination.
  • Use gentle watering.
  • Maintain good airflow after seedlings emerge.

Because the seed is surface sown, moisture can evaporate quickly, so check trays and garden beds regularly.

Plant Spacing

Space established plants approximately:

10–15cm apart

This allows the compact plants to form a dense flowering display while maintaining adequate airflow.

For mass planting, plants can be positioned towards the closer end of this range.

Position

Grow Linaria in:

Full sun to partial shade

For strong flowering during cool weather, provide plenty of direct sunlight.

Linaria prefers:

  • Full sun during mild conditions
  • Light partial shade in warmer conditions
  • Well-drained soil
  • Consistent moisture during establishment
  • Good airflow
  • Protection from prolonged extreme heat

Soil & Drainage

Linaria grows successfully in a range of soils where drainage is reliable.

Choose soil that is:

  • Well drained
  • Loose and workable
  • Moderately fertile
  • Moisture retentive without remaining saturated

Before direct sowing:

  1. Remove weeds.
  2. Break up large soil clumps.
  3. Rake the surface reasonably fine.
  4. Water dry soil before sowing.

Avoid areas that remain waterlogged after rain.

Watering

During germination and establishment, keep the soil:

Consistently moist but not waterlogged

For best results:

  • Check newly sown areas frequently.
  • Mist or water gently during germination.
  • Avoid washing surface-sown seeds away.
  • Maintain regular moisture while seedlings establish.
  • Reduce watering frequency once roots are stronger.
  • Increase watering during dry or windy conditions.
  • Ensure containers drain freely.

Feeding

Linaria does not require excessively rich soil.

Moderately fertile soil is usually sufficient.

Poor soil can be improved with a modest amount of mature compost or another suitable soil amendment before planting.

Container-grown plants may benefit from occasional light feeding during active growth and flowering.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of compact flowering.

Growing Linaria in Pots

Linaria's compact habit makes it particularly suitable for containers.

It can be grown in:

  • Pots
  • Window boxes
  • Planter troughs
  • Hanging baskets
  • Mixed edible flower containers

Choose:

  • A pot approximately 20cm wide or larger
  • Good drainage holes
  • Quality potting mix
  • A sunny to lightly shaded position
  • Reliable access to water

Several plants can be combined in a larger container for a fuller flowering display.

Borders & Mass Plantings

Linaria is particularly effective when several plants are grown together.

Suitable locations include:

  • Garden-bed fronts
  • Path edges
  • Raised beds
  • Rockeries
  • Cottage gardens
  • Edible flower gardens
  • Gaps between taller seasonal plants

Space seedlings approximately 10–15cm apart and allow their branching growth to fill the planting area.

Encouraging More Flowers

To encourage continued flowering:

  1. Harvest edible flowers regularly.
  2. Remove fading flowers.
  3. Lightly shear plants after the first major flowering flush.
  4. Water after trimming if the soil is dry.
  5. Apply a light feed only where needed.
  6. Allow fresh shoots to develop.

A light trim can stimulate new branching and another flush of flowers while cool growing conditions continue.

Managing Heat

Linaria performs best in cool to mild weather.

During warmer conditions:

  • Provide some afternoon shade where practical.
  • Maintain regular moisture.
  • Avoid severe drying in containers.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Harvest flowers regularly.
  • Lightly trim declining flower growth.

In hot regions, Linaria is generally better treated as an autumn-to-spring crop rather than a midsummer flower.

Frost Tolerance

Established Linaria can tolerate light frost and brief cold conditions.

Young seedlings are more vulnerable.

Where severe frost is expected:

  • Raise seedlings under protection.
  • Harden plants gradually before transplanting.
  • Protect very young plants during severe cold.
  • Avoid waterlogged planting sites during winter.

Harvesting Edible Linaria Flowers

Harvest flowers when they are:

  • Freshly opened
  • Clean
  • Undamaged
  • Dry rather than wet from irrigation or rain
  • Grown specifically for culinary use

The small flowers can be used whole.

To harvest:

  1. Pick flowers with clean fingers or small scissors.
  2. Inspect carefully for insects.
  3. Remove damaged blooms.
  4. Rinse gently in clean water where required.
  5. Allow excess water to drain.
  6. Use relatively soon after harvesting.

Linaria flowers have a:

Mild, delicately sweet flavour

They are suitable for:

  • Cakes
  • Desserts
  • Salads
  • Canapés
  • Cheese boards
  • Platters
  • Drinks
  • Cocktails and mocktails
  • Decorative garnishes

Food Safety for Edible Flowers

Only consume Linaria flowers that have been correctly identified and intentionally grown for culinary use.

  • Use clean gardening and harvesting equipment.
  • Do not consume flowers treated with chemicals that are not approved for edible crops.
  • Avoid ornamental flowers from florists or nurseries where treatment history is unknown.
  • Avoid flowers collected beside busy roads or from contaminated areas.
  • Inspect carefully for insects.
  • Rinse gently in clean water where appropriate.
  • Discard flowers showing mould, slime, severe discolouration or deterioration.
  • Use the flowers rather than assuming other parts of the plant are intended for culinary use.

Harvest & Storage

Linaria flowers are delicate and are best harvested close to when they will be used.

For short-term storage:

  1. Pick clean, dry flowers.
  2. Remove damaged material.
  3. Place them in a clean container.
  4. Refrigerate promptly.
  5. Protect the flowers from crushing.
  6. Avoid excessive free moisture.
  7. Use while they remain fresh and visually appealing.
