Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Please do not attend the warehouse without an appointment. All pickups are strictly by prior arrangement.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Sweet Alyssum Edible Flower Seeds

Sweet alyssum edible flower seeds produce compact, fragrant blooms with a mild sweet-peppery flavour. Ideal for colourful garnishes, garden borders, pots, hanging baskets and pollinator-friendly planting.

Description

Alyssum Seeds for Fragrant Edible Flowers

Alyssum seeds grow into compact, low-growing plants covered with masses of small, fragrant edible flowers. Sweet Alyssum is well suited to garden borders, edging, pots, window boxes and hanging baskets, where its spreading habit creates a soft display of colourful blooms.

The flowers have a distinctive sweet, honey-like fragrance and a mild flavour combining floral sweetness with light peppery and mustard-like notes. Their small size makes them particularly useful as an edible garnish where you want to add colour and flavour without overwhelming the dish.

Edible Flowers for Salads, Desserts & Garnishes

Fresh Alyssum flowers can be scattered over salads, cakes, desserts, canapés, platters and savoury dishes. Because the individual flowers are tiny, whole flower clusters can also be used to create a more noticeable decorative effect.

For culinary use, harvest clean, fully opened flowers shortly before they are required. Use only correctly identified Sweet Alyssum flowers that have been grown for edible use and have not been treated with chemicals unsuitable for edible crops.

Compact Colour for Borders, Pots & Hanging Baskets

Sweet Alyssum develops a naturally low, mounding and spreading habit that works particularly well along garden edges, paths, raised beds, rockeries and around taller plants.

It also performs well in pots, window boxes and hanging baskets, where the flowering stems can soften the edges of containers.

The abundant flowers attract bees, hoverflies and other visiting insects, making Alyssum a useful addition around productive gardens as well as an attractive edible flower crop.

Easy Edible Flowers to Grow from Seed

Alyssum can be direct sown where it is to flower or raised in trays, cells or small pots before transplanting. The tiny seeds should be surface sown or covered only very lightly, as deep planting can reduce germination.

For seed raising, a thin layer of Vermiculite Growing Medium can be used where appropriate to help maintain surface moisture without heavily burying the fine seed.

Under suitable conditions, germination generally occurs in approximately 7–14 days. Once established, plants prefer good drainage, plenty of light and moderate watering.

Long-Flowering & Easy to Maintain

Regular flower harvesting and occasional light trimming can help plants remain compact and encourage additional flowering during favourable growing conditions.

Sweet Alyssum can also self-seed where conditions are suitable. Allow some flowers to mature if you would like plants to return naturally, or remove fading flower heads before seed develops where greater control is preferred.

How to Grow Sweet Alyssum from Seed

Sweet Alyssum can be direct sown where it is to flower or started in trays, cells or small pots before transplanting.

Sowing Method

For seedling trays or pots:

  1. Fill trays, cells or small pots with a fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
  3. Scatter the seeds thinly across the surface.
  4. Gently press the seeds into contact with the moist growing medium.
  5. Cover only very lightly, if at all.
  6. Mist gently or bottom-water so the tiny seeds are not washed away.
  7. Keep the surface consistently moist during germination.
  8. Provide good light once seedlings emerge.
  9. Transplant when seedlings are established and strong enough to handle.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare a fine, weed-free seedbed.
  2. Scatter the seeds thinly.
  3. Press them gently against the soil surface.
  4. Apply only a very fine covering where necessary.
  5. Water gently and maintain consistent moisture until established.

Sowing Depth

Surface sow to approximately 2mm deep.

Alyssum seeds are very small and should not be buried deeply.

Press them gently onto moist soil or seed-raising mix and apply only a very fine covering where required.

Best Sowing Season

Sweet Alyssum performs best during mild conditions.

As a general Australian guide:

  • Cool climates: spring to early summer
  • Temperate climates: spring and autumn
  • Subtropical climates: autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: cooler, drier months
  • Hot or arid climates: autumn and spring, avoiding extreme summer heat

In mild frost-free areas, sowing may be possible over a longer period.

Avoid establishing young seedlings during severe frost or prolonged extreme heat.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Aim for a germination temperature of approximately:

18–22°C

During germination:

  • Keep the surface consistently moist.
  • Do not allow newly germinating seed to dry out.
  • Avoid saturating the growing medium.
  • Use gentle watering so the tiny seeds remain in place.
  • Provide good light as seedlings emerge.

Plant Spacing

Once established, space plants approximately:

20cm apart

This allows the naturally spreading plants to develop into a dense flowering display without severe overcrowding.

Position

Grow Sweet Alyssum in:

Full sun to partial shade

For the heaviest flowering, provide plenty of direct sunlight.

In particularly hot conditions, light afternoon shade can help protect plants from heat stress.

Choose a position with:

  • Good drainage
  • Good airflow
  • Moderate moisture
  • Plenty of light

Soil & Drainage

Sweet Alyssum grows successfully in a range of garden soils provided drainage is good.

Choose a growing medium that is:

  • Free draining
  • Moderately fertile
  • Loose enough for healthy root development
  • Not permanently waterlogged

Heavy soils that remain saturated after rain are better avoided or improved before planting.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist during germination and early establishment.

Once plants are established:

  • Water according to soil moisture rather than a fixed schedule.
  • Allow excess water to drain freely.
  • Increase watering during extended hot or dry weather.
  • Check containers more frequently because they can dry faster than garden beds.
  • Avoid keeping the root zone permanently saturated.

Feeding

Sweet Alyssum generally does not require heavy feeding.

Moderately fertile soil or a suitable amount of mature compost before planting will usually provide a good foundation.

Container-grown plants may benefit from occasional light feeding during active growth.

Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Growing Alyssum in Pots

Sweet Alyssum is well suited to:

  • Pots
  • Window boxes
  • Planter troughs
  • Hanging baskets
  • Mixed containers

Choose containers with good drainage holes and a quality growing medium.

A container approximately 20cm wide or larger is suitable for a small planting, while larger containers allow several plants to create a fuller display.

Encouraging More Flowers

For continued flowering:

  1. Harvest flowers regularly.
  2. Remove badly faded growth where practical.
  3. Lightly trim plants if they become long or untidy.
  4. Water after trimming if the soil is dry.
  5. Apply a light feed where plants are growing in containers or depleted soil.
  6. Allow fresh shoots to develop.

Avoid cutting plants back heavily during periods of extreme heat or other stress.

Harvesting Edible Alyssum Flowers

Harvest flowers when they are:

  • Fully open
  • Fresh
  • Clean
  • Free from obvious insect damage
  • Dry rather than wet from irrigation or rain

For culinary use:

  1. Harvest with clean scissors or gently pinch off flower clusters.
  2. Pick relatively close to when the flowers will be used.
  3. Inspect carefully for insects and damaged material.
  4. Rinse gently in clean water where required.
  5. Allow excess surface moisture to drain before serving.

The flowers can be used in:

  • Salads
  • Cakes
  • Desserts
  • Canapés
  • Savoury dishes
  • Platters
  • Garnishes

Food Safety for Edible Flowers

Only eat flowers that have been correctly identified as edible Sweet Alyssum and grown for culinary use.

  • Do not consume flowers treated with chemicals that are not labelled for edible crops.
  • Avoid flowers collected from roadsides or areas exposed to unknown sprays or contamination.
  • Check blooms carefully for insects.
  • Use clean gardening and harvesting equipment.
  • Wash gently with clean water where appropriate.
  • Discard flowers that are slimy, damaged, discoloured or deteriorated.

Harvest & Storage

Alyssum flowers are best harvested close to when they will be eaten.

For short-term storage:

  1. Harvest clean, dry flowers.
  2. Remove damaged blooms and insects.
  3. Place in a clean container.
  4. Refrigerate promptly.
  5. Protect the delicate flowers from crushing and excess moisture.
  6. Use as soon as practical for the best appearance and texture.
