Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouting Seeds

Australian-grown organic Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouting Seeds for crisp short sprouts with a mild, fresh and subtly nutty flavour. Large striped seeds suited to jar sprouting, tray-grown microgreens and mature sunflower growing.

Description

Australian Organic Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouting Seeds

Grow substantial, crunchy sunflower sprouts at home with our Australian-grown Organic Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouting Seeds. These large whole sunflower seeds germinate into short sprouts with a crisp texture and mild, slightly sweet and naturally nutty sunflower flavour.

This product is specifically suited to short jar-grown sunflower sprouts. The large seed benefits from a thorough pre-soak followed by regular rinsing, excellent drainage and plenty of airflow throughout germination.

Large Organic Seeds for Short Sprouting

Grey Striped sunflower seeds have a substantial outer hull and generally benefit from an 8–12 hour soak before sprouting. Because the seeds and developing seedlings are much larger than alfalfa, broccoli or clover, avoid overcrowding the jar.

A Glass Sprouting Jar provides a simple way to soak, rinse and drain the seeds while maintaining airflow around the developing sprouts.

Mild, Nutty Flavour & Crisp Texture

Young sunflower sprouts have a fresh crunch with mild sweetness and subtle nutty notes. Harvest while the emerging roots and shoots remain relatively short and crisp rather than allowing the seedlings to become long and crowded inside the jar.

Use sunflower sprouts in salads, sandwiches, wraps and savoury bowls, or combine them with other home-grown sprouts. Remove loose hulls and any damaged, ungerminated or deteriorating seeds where practical before use.

Best Harvested as Short Sunflower Sprouts

Sunflower behaves differently from small sprouting seeds. The large hull remains attached during early germination and the seedlings become bulky quickly, so good drainage and airflow are particularly important.

For this reason, Grey Striped sunflower is best harvested as a short sprout at approximately 4–7 days rather than attempting to grow long green sunflower shoots inside the jar.

Want to Grow Sunflower Microgreens Instead?

Grey Striped sunflower can also be grown in trays, but if your main goal is producing thick green sunflower shoots, OzSprout's Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds are specifically offered for tray-grown microgreens.

For tray growing, a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray provides the drainage and growing space suited to substantial crops such as sunflower shoots. Fill the tray with soil, coco fibre or another suitable microgreen growing medium, then follow the dedicated Black Sunflower growing method.

Grow Mature Sunflowers

Viable Grey Striped sunflower seed can also be planted outdoors and grown through to mature sunflower plants under suitable warm, sunny conditions.

Mature sunflowers provide ornamental flowers and can attract bees and other pollinators, while mature seed heads may also provide a natural food source for visiting seed-eating birds.

How to Grow Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouts

Organic Grey Striped sunflower seeds are large sprouting seeds that need considerably more space than small seeds such as alfalfa or broccoli. Keep the sprouts short and maintain excellent drainage and airflow throughout growing.

What You Need

  • Approximately 15–20g of dry Grey Striped sunflower seed
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A sprouting lid or draining screen
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Sort the seed: Remove any visibly damaged, broken or deteriorated seeds.
  3. Measure the seed: Use approximately 15–20g per 500ml jar. Do not overcrowd the jar.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse several times with cool drinking-quality water.
  5. Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  6. Drain completely: Discard the soaking water, rinse again and drain thoroughly.
  7. Position for drainage: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess water can escape and air can circulate.
  8. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain approximately 2–3 times daily.
  9. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep at approximately 16–24°C, away from hot direct sunlight.
  10. Watch for germination: Small white roots should begin appearing within approximately 2–4 days.
  11. Harvest young: Harvest while the roots and shoots remain relatively short and crisp, generally around 4–7 days from the beginning of soaking.

Why Keep Sunflower Sprouts Short?

Sunflower seedlings become bulky very quickly.

Keeping them short helps:

  • Maintain airflow inside the jar
  • Reduce crowding
  • Make thorough rinsing and drainage easier
  • Retain a crisp texture
  • Avoid long, tangled seedlings and attached hulls

For larger leafy sunflower shoots, use the tray-growing method rather than extending the jar-sprouting period.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use only approximately 15–20g per 500ml jar.
  • Do not overfill the jar.
  • Soak for approximately 8–12 hours.
  • Drain extremely well after every rinse.
  • Never leave the seeds sitting in standing water.
  • Rinse approximately 2–3 times daily.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Handle germinating seeds gently.
  • Loose sunflower hulls can be removed during rinsing where practical.
  • Harvest before the seedlings become long and crowded.
  • Discard sprouts showing obvious mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

Sunflower Sprouts vs Microgreens

These instructions are for short Grey Striped sunflower sprouts grown in a jar.

For thick green sunflower shoots grown in a tray, choose Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds.

The microgreen method uses a growing medium, weighted early germination and a later harvest once the broad green cotyledons have opened.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse.

Remove loose hulls and any damaged or deteriorating seeds where practical.

Drain as thoroughly as possible before transferring the sprouts to a clean covered container.

Refrigerate promptly and use while fresh.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always:

  • Wash your hands before handling seeds or sprouts.
  • Use clean equipment.
  • Use drinking-quality water.
  • Maintain thorough drainage.
  • Avoid standing water.
  • Refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.

Storage

Store unused sunflower seed tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain germination performance. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns towards room temperature before opening the container to reduce condensation.
