Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Golden Linseed (Flaxseed)

Australian-grown organic golden linseed for grinding, baking, smoothies, flax eggs and microgreens. Mild nutty flavour with versatile culinary uses, available from 500g to 20kg Australia-wide.

Description

Organic Golden Linseed (Flaxseed) for Grinding, Baking & Everyday Use

Organic golden linseed, also known as golden flaxseed, is a versatile whole seed with a mild, slightly nutty flavour and distinctive golden colour. Use it whole, grind it into flax meal, add it to smoothies and breakfast foods, incorporate it into cooking and baking, make a flax gel for binding, or grow the viable seed as flax microgreens.

Golden linseed can be used in much the same way as brown linseed, with its lighter colour making it particularly useful in breads, muffins, smoothies, porridge and other recipes where a paler seed is preferred.

Grind Golden Linseed into Flax Meal

Whole golden linseed can be ground into flax meal using a coffee grinder, high-speed blender or suitable grain mill. Freshly ground linseed can be stirred into porridge, yoghurt, smoothies and cereals or incorporated into breads, muffins, pancakes, crackers, biscuits and other baked goods.

The whole seeds can also be sprinkled over muesli, breakfast bowls, salads and baked foods when you prefer their light crunch and intact texture.

Golden Linseed vs Brown Linseed

Golden and brown linseed can generally be used in similar ways for grinding, baking, breakfast foods and flax-egg preparation. Golden linseed has a lighter appearance, which can make it preferable in pale breads, cakes, smoothies and other recipes where you want the seed to be less visually prominent.

For the darker traditional variety, see Organic Brown Linseed (Flaxseed).

Use Golden Flaxseed for Baking, Binding & Thickening

Ground flaxseed develops a gel-like consistency when mixed with water, making it useful as a plant-based binding ingredient in suitable recipes.

A simple flax egg can be made by combining approximately 1 tablespoon of finely ground linseed with 3 tablespoons of water and allowing the mixture to thicken for around 10–15 minutes. It can then be used as a binder in many muffins, pancakes, quick breads, biscuits and similar recipes.

Ground golden linseed can also add body to smoothies, batters, homemade snack bars, crackers and savoury recipes.

Grow Golden Linseed as Flax Microgreens

Whole viable golden linseed can also be grown as flax microgreens. Linseed is highly mucilaginous, meaning the seed develops a sticky gel coating after contact with water, so it requires a different growing method from conventional jar-sprouting seeds.

Do not pre-soak linseed or grow it in a conventional wet sprouting jar. Instead, sow the dry seed evenly across a moist growing surface, keep it consistently damp without waterlogging and maintain good airflow. Young flax microgreens are generally ready to harvest in approximately 6–8 days under suitable conditions.

How to Use & Grow Golden Linseed (Flaxseed)

Golden linseed, also known as golden flaxseed, is a multipurpose seed that can be used whole, ground into flax meal, incorporated into cooking and baking, or grown as flax microgreens.

Ways to Use Golden Linseed

  • Grind whole seeds into flax meal using a coffee grinder, blender or grain mill.
  • Stir ground linseed into smoothies, yoghurt, porridge and cereals.
  • Sprinkle whole seeds over muesli, breakfast bowls, salads and baked foods.
  • Add whole or ground seed to breads, muffins, pancakes, crackers and biscuits.
  • Mix ground linseed with water to make a plant-based flax egg.
  • Use hydrated ground linseed as a binding or thickening ingredient in suitable recipes.
  • Grow the whole viable seed as flax microgreens.

How to Make a Flax Egg

A flax egg can provide binding and moisture in many muffins, pancakes, quick breads, biscuits and similar recipes.

  1. Grind the seed: Finely grind the linseed if you are starting with whole seeds.
  2. Add water: Combine approximately 1 tablespoon of ground linseed with 3 tablespoons of water.
  3. Stir thoroughly: Mix until evenly combined.
  4. Allow to thicken: Leave for approximately 10–15 minutes until a thick gel forms.
  5. Use in your recipe: Add where an egg is primarily being used for binding and moisture.

A flax egg does not provide the same aeration, lift or structure as a chicken egg, so it is not suitable for every baking recipe.

How to Grow Golden Flax Microgreens

Linseed is highly mucilaginous and should not be pre-soaked or grown in a conventional wet sprouting jar.

For larger crops, a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray or another shallow tray with suitable drainage can be used.

  1. Prepare the growing surface: Add approximately 2–3cm of moist growing mix, coco fibre or another suitable microgreen medium to a shallow tray.
  2. Sow the seed dry: Spread the golden linseed evenly across the surface. Avoid thick piles or heavy overlapping because the seeds become sticky when wet.
  3. Keep the seed near the surface: Do not bury the seed deeply.
  4. Moisten gently: Mist with clean drinking-quality water without flooding the tray.
  5. Maintain moisture: Keep the growing surface consistently damp but not saturated.
  6. Provide airflow: Good ventilation is particularly important with mucilaginous seeds such as linseed.
  7. Maintain suitable conditions: Grow at approximately 16–25°C and avoid excessive heat.
  8. Provide light: Once the seedlings emerge, provide bright indirect light or a suitable grow light.
  9. Harvest: Golden flax microgreens are generally ready in approximately 6–8 days once the green cotyledon leaves have developed. Cut the shoots just above the growing medium.

Seeding

For a small saucer or similar growing surface, approximately 1 tablespoon of seed is a practical starting quantity.

For larger trays, scale the quantity to the growing area rather than using a fixed volume. Aim for an even layer with minimal overlapping rather than a thick mat of seed.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not pre-soak linseed before growing microgreens.
  • Do not use a conventional wet sprouting jar.
  • The sticky or slippery coating that forms around wet seed is normal.
  • Avoid thick piles of seed.
  • Keep the surface damp rather than waterlogged.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Avoid excessive heat.
  • Harvest while the shoots are young and tender.
  • Discard crops showing obvious mould, decay, slime or an abnormal smell.

Storage

Store whole golden linseed tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed quality. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns towards room temperature before opening the container to reduce condensation.

Once ground, flax meal has considerably more surface area exposed to air. Keep freshly ground linseed tightly sealed and refrigerated or frozen if it will not be used promptly.
