Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Brown Linseed (Flaxseed)

Australian-grown organic brown linseed for grinding, baking, smoothies, porridge and flax microgreens. Mild nutty flavour with versatile culinary uses, available in bulk sizes across Australia.

Description

Organic Brown Linseed (Flaxseed) for Grinding, Baking & Everyday Use

Organic brown linseed, also widely known as flaxseed, is a versatile whole seed with a mild, earthy and nutty flavour. Use it whole, grind it into flax meal, add it to smoothies and breakfast foods, incorporate it into cooking and baking, make a flax gel for binding, or grow the viable seed as flax microgreens.

Grinding the whole seed produces a finer texture that is particularly useful for porridge, yoghurt, smoothies, cereals and baking, while whole linseed can be used when you prefer the crunch and appearance of the intact seed.

Grind Brown Linseed into Flax Meal

Whole linseed can be ground into flax meal using a coffee grinder, high-speed blender or suitable grain mill. Freshly ground linseed can be stirred into porridge, yoghurt, smoothies and cereals or incorporated into breads, muffins, pancakes, crackers, biscuits and other baked goods.

Whole linseed can also be sprinkled over breakfast bowls, muesli, salads and baked foods. If you enjoy versatile seeds for breakfasts and smoothies, Organic Black Chia Seeds are another useful pantry option with different preparation and texture characteristics.

Use Ground Flaxseed for Baking, Binding & Thickening

Ground flaxseed develops a gel-like consistency when mixed with water, making it useful as a plant-based binding ingredient in suitable recipes.

A simple flax egg can be made by combining approximately 1 tablespoon of finely ground linseed with 3 tablespoons of water and allowing the mixture to thicken for around 10–15 minutes. It can then be used as a binder in many muffins, pancakes, quick breads, biscuits and similar recipes.

Ground linseed can also add body to smoothies, batters, homemade snack bars, crackers and savoury recipes.

Grow Brown Linseed as Flax Microgreens

Whole viable brown linseed can also be grown as flax microgreens. Linseed is highly mucilaginous, meaning the seed develops a slippery gel coating after contact with water, so it requires a different growing method from conventional jar-sprouting seeds.

Do not pre-soak linseed or grow it in a wet sprouting jar. Instead, sow the dry seed evenly across a moist growing surface, keep it consistently damp without waterlogging and maintain good airflow. Young flax microgreens can generally be harvested once green cotyledon leaves have developed, typically in approximately 5–6 days under suitable conditions.

How to Use & Grow Brown Linseed (Flaxseed)

Brown linseed, also known as flaxseed, is a multipurpose seed that can be used whole, ground into flax meal, incorporated into cooking and baking, or grown as flax microgreens.

Ways to Use Brown Linseed

  • Grind whole seeds into flax meal using a coffee grinder, blender or grain mill.
  • Stir ground linseed into smoothies, yoghurt, porridge and cereal.
  • Mix ground linseed into breads, muffins, pancakes, crackers and biscuits.
  • Sprinkle whole seeds over breakfast bowls, muesli, salads and baked foods.
  • Use ground linseed and water to make a plant-based flax egg.
  • Use ground linseed as a thickening or binding ingredient in suitable recipes.
  • Grow the whole viable seed as flax microgreens.

How to Make a Flax Egg

A flax egg is useful as a binder in many muffins, pancakes, quick breads and similar recipes.

  1. Grind the seed: Finely grind whole linseed if you are starting with intact seeds.
  2. Add water: Combine approximately 1 tablespoon of ground linseed with 3 tablespoons of water.
  3. Stir thoroughly: Mix until evenly combined.
  4. Allow to thicken: Leave the mixture for approximately 10–15 minutes until it develops a gel-like consistency.
  5. Use in your recipe: Use where an egg is primarily providing binding and moisture.

A flax egg does not provide the same aeration, lift or structure as a chicken egg, so it is not suitable for every baking recipe.

How to Grow Flax Microgreens

Linseed is a mucilaginous seed and should not be pre-soaked or grown in a conventional wet sprouting jar.

For larger crops, a Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray or another shallow tray with suitable drainage can be used.

  1. Prepare the growing surface: Add approximately 2–3cm of moist growing mix to a shallow tray. For very small crops, a saucer lined with folded paper towel can also be used.
  2. Sow the seed dry: Spread the linseed evenly across the moist surface. Avoid thick piles or heavy overlapping because the seed becomes sticky when wet.
  3. Do not bury deeply: Leave the seeds on or very close to the surface.
  4. Moisten gently: Mist carefully with clean drinking-quality water without flooding the seeds.
  5. Maintain moisture: Keep the growing surface consistently damp but not saturated.
  6. Provide airflow: Good ventilation is important because wet linseed naturally develops a sticky, gelatinous coating.
  7. Maintain suitable temperature: Grow at approximately 16–25°C and avoid excessively hot conditions.
  8. Provide light: Once seedlings emerge, provide bright indirect light or a suitable grow light.
  9. Harvest: Flax microgreens can generally be harvested in approximately 5–6 days once the green cotyledon leaves have developed. Cut the shoots cleanly just above the growing surface.

Suggested Seeding Quantity

For a small saucer lined with folded paper towel, approximately 1 tablespoon of linseed is a practical starting quantity.

For larger trays, spread the seed evenly and relatively sparsely across the surface rather than forming thick layers. Leave visible space around the seeds to help manage the mucilage and airflow.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not soak linseed before sowing microgreens.
  • Do not use a conventional wet sprouting jar.
  • The slippery gel coating around wet seeds is normal.
  • Avoid thick piles of seed.
  • Keep the growing surface damp rather than waterlogged.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Avoid excessive heat.
  • Harvest once the green cotyledon leaves have developed.
  • Discard any crop showing obvious mould, decay, slime or an abnormal smell.

Storage

Store whole brown linseed in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed quality. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns towards room temperature before opening the container to help reduce condensation.

Once ground, flax meal has considerably more surface area exposed to air. Keep freshly ground linseed tightly sealed and refrigerated or frozen if it will not be used promptly.
