Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Black Chia Seeds

Organic black chia seeds for puddings, smoothies, yoghurt, porridge, baking and plant-based egg substitutes. Use whole, soaked or ground, with bulk sizes available across Australia.

Description

Organic Black Chia Seeds for Everyday Cooking & Baking

Add versatility to your pantry with organic black chia seeds, a mild-tasting whole seed that can be used whole, soaked, blended, ground or added to cooking and baking. Chia works easily across breakfast foods, smoothies, baked goods, desserts and savoury recipes.

Unlike linseed or flaxseed, chia does not need to be ground before use, although grinding is another useful option when you want a finer texture for smoothies, baking or other recipes.

Use Chia Seeds Whole, Soaked or Ground

Sprinkle whole chia seeds over yoghurt, porridge, overnight oats, muesli, breakfast bowls, salads and cereals, or blend them into smoothies and shakes. Their mild flavour makes them easy to combine with both sweet and savoury ingredients.

When mixed with liquid, chia develops its characteristic gel-like texture. This makes it useful for chia pudding, overnight breakfasts, thickening smoothies and sauces, and plant-based egg substitutes in suitable baking recipes.

Chia seeds can also be ground into chia meal using a suitable grinder or blender. Ground chia can be incorporated into breads, muffins, pancakes, crackers, energy balls and other baked goods where a finer texture is preferred.

Build Your Breakfast & Smoothie Seed Mix

Chia also pairs well with other versatile pantry seeds. Add ground Organic Brown Linseed (Flaxseed) to smoothies, yoghurt, porridge or cereal, or sprinkle Organic Raw Pumpkin Seed Kernels (Pepitas) over muesli, granola and breakfast bowls for extra texture and crunch.

For another versatile seed-based pantry staple, try Organic White Quinoa Seeds. Quinoa can be cooked into breakfast porridge or lightly toasted or popped for use in cereals, snack mixes and toppings.

Chia Seeds for Baking, Binding & Thickening

The natural gel formed by hydrated chia makes it a useful functional ingredient in the kitchen. One tablespoon of chia mixed with approximately three tablespoons of water can be allowed to thicken and used as a binding substitute for an egg in many muffins, pancakes, quick breads and other dense baked recipes.

Whole or ground chia can also be added to bread doughs, biscuits, homemade snack bars and granola, or used to add body to soups, sauces and dressings.

Grow Chia Microgreens

These viable chia seeds can also be grown as chia microgreens. Chia is a mucilaginous seed, meaning it develops a jelly-like coating when wet, so it should not be pre-soaked or grown using a conventional wet sprouting jar method.

Instead, sow the dry seed across a moist microgreen tray, growing mat or suitable medium. Keep the surface evenly damp without waterlogging, provide good airflow and move the developing seedlings into bright light once established. Chia microgreens are generally ready to harvest in approximately 10–15 days.

How to Use & Grow Chia Seeds

Chia is a versatile pantry seed that can be used whole, soaked to form a gel, ground into chia meal, incorporated into cooking and baking, or grown as microgreens.

For other seeds suited to breakfast bowls and smoothies, see Organic Brown Linseed (Flaxseed) and Organic Raw Pumpkin Seed Kernels (Pepitas).

Ways to Use Chia Seeds

  • Sprinkle whole chia seeds over yoghurt, porridge, muesli, cereal and breakfast bowls.
  • Stir into overnight oats.
  • Blend into smoothies and shakes.
  • Soak in milk, plant-based milk or another suitable liquid to make chia pudding.
  • Use hydrated chia to add body to smoothies, sauces and other recipes.
  • Add whole seeds to breads, muffins, crackers, biscuits, granola and snack bars.
  • Grind dry chia seeds into chia meal for a finer texture in baking and smoothies.
  • Use hydrated chia as a plant-based binder in suitable baking recipes.
  • Grow the seeds as chia microgreens.

For another versatile grain-like seed, Organic White Quinoa Seeds can be cooked for breakfast bowls or porridge and can also be lightly toasted or popped for toppings.

Make a Chia Egg for Baking

A chia egg can work as a binder in recipes such as muffins, pancakes, quick breads and some biscuits.

  1. Measure: Combine 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water.
  2. Stir: Mix thoroughly so the seeds are evenly distributed.
  3. Allow to thicken: Leave for approximately 10–15 minutes until a thick gel forms.
  4. Use in your recipe: Substitute for one egg where the egg's main purpose is binding.

A chia egg does not provide the same lift or structure as a chicken egg, so it is not suitable for every baking recipe.

How to Grow Chia Microgreens

Chia is a mucilaginous seed and should not be pre-soaked for microgreen growing. Once wet, the seeds rapidly develop a gel-like coating.

  1. Prepare the tray: Fill a shallow tray with approximately 3–4cm of moist seed-raising mix, coco fibre or another suitable microgreen growing medium.
  2. Sow the seed dry: Sprinkle chia seeds evenly across the surface. Aim for dense, even coverage without creating thick piles.
  3. Mist gently: Mist the seeds with clean drinking-quality water. Avoid flooding the tray.
  4. Maintain moisture: Keep the surface consistently damp while the seeds germinate, but do not allow the growing medium to become waterlogged.
  5. Provide airflow: A ventilated cover can help maintain moisture during early germination. Remove it once the seedlings become established.
  6. Provide light: Move established seedlings into bright indirect light or beneath a suitable grow light.
  7. Continue watering carefully: Keep the growing medium moist while avoiding excessive moisture around the stems and seed layer.
  8. Harvest: Chia microgreens are generally ready in approximately 10–15 days. Cut the young shoots just above the growing medium once they are green and well developed.

Tips for Chia Microgreens

  • Do not soak chia seed before sowing.
  • Do not use a conventional wet sprouting jar.
  • The jelly-like coating that forms around wet chia seeds is normal.
  • Avoid thick piles of seed.
  • Keep the growing surface damp rather than saturated.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Avoid excessive heat and harsh direct sunlight.
  • Discard crops showing obvious mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.
  • Harvest the microgreens above the growing medium, leaving the roots and medium behind.

Storage

Keep dry chia seeds tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can be used. Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return towards room temperature before opening the container to help reduce condensation.
