Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Oregano Herb Seeds

Oregano Herb Seeds grow into hardy perennial plants with aromatic green leaves and a robust, savoury Mediterranean flavour. Ideal for pizza, pasta, tomato sauces, vegetables and marinades, with compact plants suited to garden beds, raised beds and pots.

Description

Oregano Herb Seeds for Fresh & Dried Culinary Herbs

Oregano Herb Seeds grow into hardy, aromatic perennial plants with small green leaves and the bold savoury flavour associated with Mediterranean cooking. Oregano is an excellent herb for garden beds, raised beds and containers, providing leaves that can be harvested fresh or dried for later use.

The leaves have a robust, peppery and slightly earthy flavour that pairs particularly well with tomato, garlic and olive oil. Use Oregano in pizza, pasta sauces, roasted vegetables, marinades, soups, grilled dishes and Mediterranean-inspired recipes.

Oregano vs Marjoram

Oregano has a stronger, more robust and peppery flavour than its close relative Marjoram. If you prefer a softer, sweeter herb with delicate citrus and floral notes, see our Marjoram Herb Seeds.

Both herbs can be used fresh or dried, but Oregano is generally the better choice where a bold Mediterranean flavour is wanted.

Hardy Perennial for Repeat Harvests

Once established, Oregano develops into a compact, spreading clump that can remain productive for several years. Regular trimming encourages branching and produces fresh leafy growth for repeated harvesting.

Plants also develop small pink, mauve or white flowers as they mature. If culinary leaves are the priority, harvest regularly and trim spent flower stems to encourage fresh growth.

Ideal for Sunny, Well-Drained Gardens

Oregano performs best in a warm, sunny position with freely draining soil. Once established, it becomes relatively drought tolerant and generally prefers slightly drier conditions than moisture-loving herbs.

Allow approximately 20–30cm between plants. Mature plants generally reach around 30–60cm tall under suitable conditions.

Well Suited to Pots & Small Gardens

Oregano grows well in pots, balcony herb gardens and sunny spaces close to the kitchen. Choose a free-draining potting mix and avoid keeping established plants permanently wet.

Begin substantial harvesting from approximately 80–100 days after sowing, although light picking can begin earlier once plants are well established. Harvest young shoots as required or cut larger quantities shortly before flowering for drying and storage.

How to Grow Oregano

Oregano is a hardy perennial culinary herb that prefers full sun, warm conditions and freely draining soil. Once established, it can provide repeated harvests of aromatic leaves for several years.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring to summer; autumn also suitable in mild climates
  • Sowing depth: Surface sow to approximately 1–2mm
  • Germination: 7–21 days
  • Germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C
  • Plant spacing: 20–30cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Mature height: approximately 30–60cm
  • First substantial harvest: approximately 80–100 days
  • Life cycle: Hardy perennial

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow during:

Spring through summer

Autumn sowing is also suitable in mild to warm climates.

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring to early summer
  • Temperate climates: spring through summer, with autumn also possible
  • Subtropical climates: spring and autumn
  • Tropical climates: favour the cooler, drier months
  • Hot and arid climates: spring or autumn

Sowing

Oregano is easiest to establish in trays, cells or small pots because the seed is extremely fine.

  1. Fill containers with fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the mix before sowing.
  3. Scatter seeds thinly over the surface.
  4. Press gently into contact with the moist mix.
  5. Leave uncovered or apply only a very fine covering, approximately 1–2mm.
  6. Mist gently or bottom water so the seed is not displaced.
  7. Keep the surface evenly moist.
  8. Provide warmth and good light.
  9. Transplant once seedlings are established and sturdy enough to handle.

Direct sowing is also possible during suitable settled weather.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–21 days

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

Emergence can be uneven, so allow sufficient time before assuming seed has failed.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun

Allow approximately:

20–30cm between plants

Use warm, freely draining soil. Partial shade is tolerated, although plenty of sunlight generally encourages compact, aromatic growth.

Watering

Keep young plants evenly moist while they establish.

Once established, allow the upper soil to begin drying before watering again.

Avoid:

  • permanently wet soil;
  • poor drainage;
  • containers sitting in water; and
  • excessive watering during cool, wet periods.

Established Oregano generally tolerates slight dryness better than waterlogging.

Feeding

Oregano does not require heavily enriched soil.

Moderately fertile, freely draining soil is usually sufficient. Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can encourage soft, overly lush growth.

Pruning & Harvesting

Begin substantial harvesting from approximately:

80–100 days after sowing

Light picking can begin earlier once plants are well established.

Cut healthy leafy stems above lower leaves rather than stripping stems bare.

Regular trimming encourages branching and fresh growth.

Harvesting for Drying

Oregano dries particularly well.

For strong flavour, harvest larger quantities shortly before or as flowering begins.

  1. Cut healthy leafy stems.
  2. Tie into small loose bunches or spread on a drying rack.
  3. Dry in a shaded, well-ventilated location.
  4. Strip the leaves once completely dry.
  5. Store in an airtight container away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Growing Oregano in Pots

Oregano grows very well in containers.

Use a pot approximately:

20–30cm wide or larger

with:

  • good drainage holes;
  • free-draining potting mix;
  • a sunny position; and
  • moderate watering.

Avoid leaving the container standing in water.

Oregano vs Marjoram

Oregano has a stronger, more robust and peppery flavour.

For a sweeter, milder Mediterranean herb, see Marjoram Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest fresh leaves and tender stems as required.

Fresh Oregano is best used soon after picking. For longer storage, dry the leaves completely before placing them in an airtight container.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
