Marjoram Herb Seeds for Fresh Aromatic Leaves
Marjoram Herb Seeds grow into compact, highly aromatic plants with soft grey-green foliage and a delicate sweet, citrusy flavour. Closely related to oregano but noticeably milder, marjoram is a versatile culinary herb for Mediterranean-inspired cooking and a useful addition to home herb gardens.
Harvest the fragrant leaves fresh for pasta sauces, soups, stews, roasted vegetables, tomato dishes, fish, eggs and salad dressings. Marjoram also dries well, making it practical to preserve surplus leaves for cooking throughout the year.
Marjoram vs Oregano
Marjoram has a softer, sweeter flavour with delicate citrus and floral notes, while oregano has a stronger, more robust and peppery character. If you prefer the bolder Mediterranean flavour commonly used on pizza and in tomato-based dishes, see our Oregano Herb Seeds.
Both herbs are closely related and can be used fresh or dried, but Marjoram is particularly useful where a gentler herb flavour is preferred.
Compact Herb for Garden Beds & Pots
Marjoram develops into a bushy plant that performs best in a warm, sunny position with freely draining soil. It can be grown in garden beds, raised beds or containers and is particularly suitable for pots where drainage and winter protection are easier to manage.
Once established, Marjoram prefers conditions slightly on the drier side and should not be kept permanently wet. Regular trimming encourages compact, branching growth and a steady supply of fresh leaves.
Perennial in Warm Conditions, Often Grown as an Annual
Marjoram is botanically a frost-tender perennial. In warm, sheltered Australian climates it may persist for several seasons, while gardeners in colder or frost-prone areas often grow it as an annual or protect container plants during winter.
Small Seeds, Reliable Warm-Season Growth
The very small seeds should be surface sown or covered only lightly. Under suitable warm conditions, germination generally occurs within 7–14 days.
Begin substantial leaf harvesting from approximately 60–80 days after sowing, then continue cutting young stems and leaves as fresh growth develops.
