Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley Herb Seeds

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley Herb Seeds grow into upright plants with aromatic, deep green flat leaves and a fresh, robust parsley flavour. Ideal for sauces, salads, soups, pasta and everyday cooking, with repeat harvesting from garden beds or containers.

Description

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley Herb Seeds for Fresh Culinary Leaves

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley Herb Seeds grow into upright, leafy plants with smooth dark green foliage and a fresh, aromatic flavour. Also widely known as Continental Parsley, this classic culinary herb has a stronger, more pronounced parsley character than curled types and is particularly useful for everyday cooking.

Fresh leaves and tender stems can be chopped into pasta dishes, sauces, soups, salads, dressings, marinades, vegetables and savoury dishes. Flat Leaf Parsley also stands up well to cooking, while freshly chopped leaves make an excellent finishing herb when added just before serving.

Italian Flat Leaf vs Curled Parsley

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley produces broad, smooth leaves with a stronger parsley flavour and is particularly useful for chopping into sauces, soups, salads and cooked dishes. If you prefer tightly curled foliage with a milder flavour and traditional garnish appearance, see our Curled Parsley Herb Seeds.

Both parsley types can be harvested repeatedly and grow well in garden beds, raised beds and containers.

Productive Parsley for Garden Beds & Containers

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley grows well in fertile, consistently moist but freely draining soil and performs in full sun to partial shade. Seeds can be direct sown or raised as seedlings before transplanting.

Allow approximately 20–30cm between plants. Under suitable conditions, leafy plants generally reach around 30–60cm tall.

Harvest Fresh Leaves Again & Again

Begin light harvesting once plants are well established, with substantial regular harvesting generally possible from approximately 70–90 days after sowing.

Cut mature outer stems close to the base while leaving the younger central growth intact. This allows new foliage to continue developing for repeated harvests.

A Biennial Commonly Grown for First-Year Leaves

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley is naturally a biennial, producing its best leafy growth during the first year before progressing towards flowering and seed production in its second season.

For culinary production, many growers replace older flowering plants with fresh seedlings once leaf quality and production begin to decline.

How to Grow Italian Flat Leaf Parsley

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley is a biennial culinary herb grown for its broad, aromatic green leaves and robust parsley flavour. It prefers fertile soil, consistent moisture and cool to moderate growing conditions.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring and autumn
  • Sowing depth: approximately 3mm
  • Germination: 14–28 days
  • Germination temperature: approximately 18–24°C
  • Plant spacing: 20–30cm
  • Position: Full sun to partial shade
  • Mature height: approximately 30–60cm
  • First substantial harvest: approximately 70–90 days
  • Life cycle: Biennial, commonly grown for first-year foliage

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow during:

Spring and autumn

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring through summer
  • Temperate climates: spring and autumn
  • Subtropical climates: autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: favour the cooler months
  • Hot and arid climates: favour autumn and spring

In mild areas, parsley can often be grown through much of the year.

Sowing

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley can be direct sown or raised as seedlings.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil.
  2. Sow approximately 3mm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with fine soil.
  4. Water gently.
  5. Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination.
  6. Thin seedlings once established.

For seedling raising:

  1. Fill trays or small pots with fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Sow approximately 3mm deep.
  3. Keep evenly moist.
  4. Provide good light after emergence.
  5. Transplant carefully once seedlings have several true leaves.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

14–28 days

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Parsley is naturally slower to germinate than many common herbs. Maintain steady moisture and allow adequate time for emergence.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun to partial shade

Allow approximately:

20–30cm between plants

Use fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

In hot Australian conditions, some afternoon shade can help reduce wilting and maintain tender foliage.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist without leaving the root zone waterlogged.

Water thoroughly when required and avoid repeatedly allowing plants to wilt.

Container-grown parsley may need more frequent watering during hot weather.

Feeding

Parsley performs best in fertile soil containing organic matter.

Incorporate mature compost or another suitable soil amendment before planting where required.

Frequently harvested container plants can be fed periodically during active growth.

Harvesting

Substantial regular harvesting can generally begin from approximately:

70–90 days after sowing

Light picking can begin earlier once plants have developed enough established foliage.

To harvest:

  1. Select mature outer stems.
  2. Cut them close to the base.
  3. Leave younger central growth intact.
  4. Allow replacement stems to develop before another heavy harvest.

Italian Flat Leaf vs Curled Parsley

Italian Flat Leaf Parsley has broad smooth foliage and a stronger parsley flavour suited to sauces, soups, salads and cooking.

For tightly curled leaves and a milder flavour, see Curled Parsley Herb Seeds.

Flowering & Second-Year Growth

Parsley is naturally a biennial.

During its second growing season, established plants may produce tall flower stalks and eventually seed.

As flowering progresses, leaf production generally declines and foliage becomes coarser.

For the best culinary leaves, replace older flowering plants with fresh seedlings.

Growing Flat Leaf Parsley in Pots

Use a pot approximately:

20–30cm wide or larger

with:

  • sufficient depth for the root system;
  • good drainage holes;
  • quality potting mix;
  • full sun to partial shade; and
  • consistent watering.

Several plants can be grown in a larger container where adequate spacing is maintained.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest healthy leaves and tender stems as required.

Fresh parsley is best used soon after picking and should be refrigerated promptly for short-term storage.

Leaves can also be chopped and frozen. Drying is possible, although fresh or frozen parsley generally retains more of its characteristic flavour.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
