Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Green Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds

Green Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds grow into compact, fresh green microgreens with tender stems and a mild, slightly sweet mustard flavour. Ideal for salads, sandwiches, wraps, soups, stir-fries and mixed microgreen trays.

Description

Green Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds for Mild, Fresh Asian Greens

Green Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds produce compact, attractive microgreens with tender pale-green stems, rich green foliage and a mild brassica flavour with subtle mustard and sweet notes. Tatsoi is an excellent choice for growers who want a gentler flavour than spicy radish or mustard while still adding freshness and texture to meals.

Tatsoi is a fast-growing Asian green in the same broad plant family as pak choi, mizuna and turnip. As a microgreen it develops rounded green cotyledons, followed by the characteristic darker, spoon-shaped true leaves for which mature Tatsoi is known.

Mild Mustard Flavour & Versatile Culinary Uses

The flavour is fresh and mild with a light mustard character and subtle sweetness. This makes Tatsoi particularly easy to combine with other microgreens rather than dominating a dish.

Use freshly harvested Tatsoi microgreens in salads, sandwiches, wraps and grain bowls, or scatter them over noodles, soups, eggs and Asian-inspired dishes immediately before serving. They can also be combined with stronger crops such as radish, rocket or mustard to balance a mixed microgreen tray.

For a contrasting Tatsoi crop with darker purple-toned foliage, see our Purple Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds.

Fast-Growing Tray Microgreens

Tatsoi seed does not require pre-soaking and is straightforward to grow in a fine growing medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium. A short covered establishment period followed by bright light, good airflow and bottom watering generally produces a compact, even crop.

Harvest can begin at the cotyledon stage, but allowing the first true leaves to appear produces a more distinctive Tatsoi microgreen. A practical harvest window is approximately 10–14 days from sowing.

Compact Growth with Distinctive Spoon-Shaped Leaves

As the crop develops, the early rounded cotyledons give way to darker green true leaves with the characteristic spoon-shaped form associated with Tatsoi. Allowing some true-leaf development gives the crop a more recognisable appearance while maintaining a tender texture and mild flavour.

Grow Beyond the Microgreen Stage

The same seed can also be grown for baby leaves or allowed to mature into full-sized Tatsoi. Mature plants form compact rosettes of dark green, spoon-shaped leaves and are commonly used fresh or lightly cooked.

How to Grow Green Tatsoi Microgreens

Green Tatsoi is a fast-growing microgreen with tender pale-green stems, rich green foliage and a mild brassica flavour with subtle mustard and sweet notes. It requires no pre-soaking and can generally be harvested in approximately 10–14 days.

What You Need

  • Green Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • A second tray or suitable blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

10–12g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the growing surface and avoid dense clumps.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow Green Tatsoi seed dry directly onto the prepared growing medium.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, covers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread approximately 10–12g of dry seed evenly across the surface.
  5. Gently press the seed into contact with the growing medium.
  6. Mist lightly with clean drinking-quality water.
  7. Cover with another tray or suitable blackout cover.
  8. Keep covered for approximately 2–3 days.
  9. Remove the cover once most seedlings have germinated and are beginning to push upward.
  10. Move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  11. Maintain good airflow.
  12. Bottom water once the roots establish.
  13. Harvest at approximately 10–14 days.

Blackout

Keep the tray covered for approximately:

2–3 days

Light tray pressure can help maintain good seed-to-medium contact, but heavy weighting is unnecessary.

Remove the cover promptly once the crop establishes.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

3–7 days

Tatsoi generally establishes quickly under suitable conditions.

Maintain even moisture without keeping the growing medium permanently saturated.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Tatsoi performs well under cool to moderate growing conditions.

Light & True-Leaf Development

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The crop begins with rounded green cotyledons and later develops darker, spoon-shaped true leaves.

Allowing the first true leaves to begin forming can produce:

  • a more recognisable Tatsoi appearance;
  • darker green foliage;
  • a slightly more substantial crop; and
  • continued mild flavour.

Watering

During early germination, mist gently if required.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without leaving standing water beneath the tray.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

10–14 days from sowing

Green Tatsoi microgreens are generally ready when:

  • cotyledons are fully open;
  • foliage is healthy green;
  • stems remain tender;
  • shoots are approximately 4–7cm tall; and
  • early true leaves may be beginning to develop.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Green Tatsoi vs Purple Tatsoi

Green Tatsoi produces fresh green foliage with a mild brassica flavour.

For a darker crop with purple-toned foliage and stronger visual contrast, see Purple Tatsoi Microgreen Seeds.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between seedlings;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur alongside slime, discolouration or unpleasant smells.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Growing Green Tatsoi as Baby Leaf

For baby-leaf production:

  1. Sow at a substantially lower density than for microgreens.
  2. Allow individual plants more room.
  3. Continue growing beyond the microgreen stage.
  4. Maintain consistent moisture.
  5. Provide good light.
  6. Harvest tender leaves progressively.

Growing Green Tatsoi to Maturity

Tatsoi can also be grown into mature rosettes.

For mature plants:

  1. Direct sow or raise seedlings.
  2. Sow approximately 5–6mm deep.
  3. Thin or transplant plants to approximately 20cm apart.
  4. Allow approximately 30–40cm between rows.
  5. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil.
  6. Provide full sun to partial shade.
  7. Maintain consistent moisture.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage, controlled moisture and adequate airflow.

Discard microgreens showing mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Green Tatsoi seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
