Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Garlic Chive Herb Seeds

Garlic Chive Herb Seeds grow into hardy perennial clumps with flat green leaves, edible white flowers and a mild garlic-onion flavour. Ideal for stir-fries, dumplings, eggs, soups and salads, with plants suited to garden beds and containers.

Description

Garlic Chive Herb Seeds for Fresh Culinary Herbs

Garlic Chive Herb Seeds grow into hardy perennial herbs with long, flat green leaves and a distinctive mild garlic-onion flavour. Also known as Chinese chives, they are particularly useful in Asian-inspired cooking and make a productive addition to herb gardens, vegetable beds and containers.

Snip fresh leaves into stir-fries, dumplings, noodle dishes, soups and egg dishes, or use them raw in salads, sauces and savoury garnishes. Their fresh allium flavour is stronger and more garlicky than common onion chives without being as intense as mature garlic.

Garlic Chives vs Onion Chives

Garlic Chives produce flat, strap-like leaves with a mild garlic-onion flavour. If you prefer slender, hollow leaves with a milder sweet onion flavour, see our Onion Chive Herb Seeds.

Both types form perennial clumps and can provide repeated harvests once established, but their different leaf shape and flavour make them useful for different culinary purposes.

Grow Garlic Chives as Herbs or Microgreens

This product is intended for growing mature perennial Garlic Chive plants in garden beds, raised beds or containers. Once established, the plants can provide repeated leaf harvests over multiple seasons.

If you prefer to grow young tray-grown shoots for an earlier harvest, see our Garlic Chive Microgreen Seeds.

Perennial Herbs for Repeat Harvests

Garlic Chives gradually develop into productive clumps that can return for multiple seasons. Once plants are established, regular cutting encourages fresh leaf growth and allows repeated harvesting throughout their active growing period.

The plants also produce attractive clusters of white, star-shaped flowers. Clean flowers can be used as an edible garnish, while flowering plants also add ornamental interest to herb and vegetable gardens.

Easy to Grow in Beds or Containers

Sow directly into the final growing position or raise seedlings in pots or trays before transplanting. Garlic Chives prefer full sun to partial shade, fertile soil and consistent moisture with good drainage.

Allow approximately 15–20cm between plants so the developing clumps have room to expand. Mature plants can reach approximately 40–60cm tall under suitable conditions.

Allow Time for Plants to Establish

Garlic Chives establish more slowly from seed than fast annual herbs such as basil. Allow approximately 60–90 days before substantial first harvesting, then cut leaves regularly as fresh growth develops.

How to Grow Garlic Chives

Garlic Chives are hardy, clump-forming perennial herbs grown for their flat green leaves, mild garlic-onion flavour and edible white flowers. They establish relatively slowly from seed but can provide repeated harvests for multiple seasons.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring, summer and autumn
  • Sowing depth: 5–8mm
  • Germination: 14–21 days
  • Germination temperature: approximately 15–21°C
  • Plant spacing: 15–20cm
  • Position: Full sun to partial shade
  • Mature height: approximately 40–60cm
  • First substantial harvest: approximately 60–90 days
  • Life cycle: Hardy perennial

When to Sow

For much of Australia, sow during:

Spring, summer and autumn

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring to summer
  • Temperate climates: spring through autumn
  • Subtropical climates: a broad sowing period, particularly autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: favour the milder parts of the year
  • Hot and arid climates: avoid extreme heat during establishment

Sowing

Garlic Chives can be direct sown or raised as seedlings.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained soil.
  2. Sow approximately 5–8mm deep.
  3. Cover lightly and water gently.
  4. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination.
  5. Thin seedlings once established.

For seedling raising:

  1. Fill cells or small pots with fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Sow several seeds per cell or pot.
  3. Keep evenly moist.
  4. Provide good light after emergence.
  5. Transplant once seedlings are well established.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

14–21 days

Aim for approximately:

15–21°C

Garlic Chives can emerge more slowly than many annual herbs, so maintain moisture and allow adequate time before assuming seed has failed.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun to partial shade

Allow approximately:

15–20cm between plants

Plants gradually form expanding clumps, so additional room can be provided where larger long-term clumps are desired.

Use fertile, consistently moist but well-drained soil.

Watering

Keep the soil reasonably moist during establishment and active leaf growth.

Water thoroughly when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess moisture to drain.

Avoid:

  • prolonged waterlogging;
  • repeated severe drying; and
  • constantly wet foliage.

Container-grown plants usually require more frequent moisture checks than garden-grown plants.

Feeding

Garlic Chives respond well to fertile soil.

Incorporate mature compost or another suitable soil amendment before planting where required.

Established plants can be fed periodically during active growth, particularly when they are being harvested regularly.

Harvesting

Allow young plants to establish before heavy cutting.

Begin substantial harvesting from approximately:

60–90 days after sowing

Cut mature leaves close to the base while leaving enough foliage for continued growth.

Established clumps can then be harvested repeatedly as fresh leaves develop.

Flowers

Garlic Chives produce white, star-shaped flower clusters.

The flowers are edible when clean and suitable for culinary use.

If leaf production is the priority, remove developing flower stalks. If you want flowers, seed or natural self-sowing, allow selected stems to mature.

Growing Garlic Chives in Pots

Garlic Chives grow well in containers.

Use a pot approximately:

20–30cm wide or larger

with:

  • good drainage holes;
  • quality potting mix;
  • full sun to partial shade; and
  • regular watering.

As perennial clumps expand, divide or move crowded plants into larger containers where required.

Dividing Established Clumps

Older clumps can eventually become crowded.

Lift and divide established plants periodically, then replant healthy sections with enough space for renewed growth.

Garlic Chives vs Onion Chives

Garlic Chives have flat leaves and a stronger garlic-onion flavour.

For a milder chive with slender, hollow leaves and a sweet onion character, see Onion Chive Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Fresh Garlic Chives are best harvested close to when they will be used.

Keep cut leaves cool and protected from dehydration, and refrigerate promptly if they are not being used immediately.

Leaves can also be chopped and frozen, although their texture softens after freezing.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
