Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Onion Chive Herb Seeds

Onion Chive Herb Seeds grow into hardy perennial clumps with slender, hollow green leaves and a mild fresh onion flavour. Ideal for salads, eggs, potatoes, soups, dips and garnishes, with edible flowers and excellent suitability for pots or garden beds.

Description

Onion Chive Herb Seeds for Fresh Culinary Herbs

Onion Chive Herb Seeds grow into neat perennial clumps of slender, hollow green leaves with a fresh, mild onion flavour. Easy to harvest and highly versatile in the kitchen, chives are an excellent addition to herb gardens, vegetable beds, raised beds and containers.

Fresh leaves can be finely chopped over baked potatoes, eggs, salads, soups, sauces and vegetables, or stirred into dips, soft cheeses and savoury butters. Their mild flavour makes them particularly useful where you want fresh onion character without overpowering other ingredients.

Onion Chives vs Garlic Chives

Onion Chives produce slender, hollow leaves with a mild sweet onion flavour. For flatter leaves with a more pronounced garlic-onion character, see our Garlic Chive Herb Seeds.

Both are hardy, clump-forming perennial herbs that can provide repeated harvests once established, but their different leaf shape and flavour make them useful for different culinary purposes.

Perennial Herbs for Repeat Harvests

Once established, Onion Chives gradually develop into productive clumps that can return for multiple seasons. Regular cutting encourages fresh leaf growth and allows repeated harvesting throughout their active growing period.

The plants also produce attractive rounded purple to mauve flower heads. The flowers are edible when clean and suitable for culinary use, and individual florets can be used in salads, savoury dishes and garnishes.

Easy to Grow in Garden Beds or Pots

Chives grow well in full sun to partial shade and prefer fertile, consistently moist but freely draining soil. Seeds can be direct sown in small clusters or raised in trays and transplanted once seedlings are established.

Allow approximately 15–30cm between established clumps. Plants generally reach around 25–40cm tall, making Onion Chives particularly suitable for containers, small gardens and spaces close to the kitchen.

Harvest Fresh Chives for Months or Years

Begin useful harvesting once plants are well established, generally from approximately 60–90 days after sowing. Cut healthy leaves close to the base and allow fresh foliage to regrow before another heavy harvest.

Older clumps can eventually become crowded. Dividing established plants periodically helps maintain vigorous growth and also provides additional plants for the garden or containers.

How to Grow Onion Chives

Onion Chives are hardy, clump-forming perennial herbs grown for their slender hollow leaves, mild onion flavour and edible purple flowers. Once established, they can provide repeated harvests for several seasons.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring, summer and autumn
  • Sowing depth: 5–6mm
  • Germination: 7–14 days; allow up to 21 days in cooler conditions
  • Germination temperature: approximately 18–21°C
  • Plant spacing: 15–30cm between established clumps
  • Position: Full sun to partial shade
  • Mature height: approximately 25–40cm
  • First useful harvest: approximately 60–90 days
  • Life cycle: Hardy perennial

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow during:

Spring, summer and autumn

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring through early autumn
  • Temperate climates: spring through autumn
  • Subtropical climates: a broad sowing period, particularly autumn through spring
  • Tropical climates: sow during suitable mild conditions
  • Hot and arid climates: favour spring and autumn rather than extreme summer heat

Sowing

Onion Chives can be direct sown or raised as seedlings.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare fertile, loose, well-drained soil.
  2. Sow several seeds together to form small clusters.
  3. Plant approximately 5–6mm deep.
  4. Water gently.
  5. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
  6. Thin or reposition seedlings if required.

For tray sowing:

  1. Fill cells or small pots with fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Sow several seeds together in each cell.
  3. Cover approximately 5–6mm deep.
  4. Keep evenly moist.
  5. Provide good light after germination.
  6. Transplant the small clumps once established.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Allow up to 21 days in cooler conditions.

Aim for approximately:

18–21°C

Maintain even moisture while seedlings establish.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun to partial shade

Allow approximately:

15–30cm between established clumps

Closer spacing suits smaller plants or edging, while 25–30cm gives mature clumps more room to expand.

Use fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

Watering

Keep the soil reasonably moist during establishment and active leaf production.

Water thoroughly when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain.

Avoid:

  • repeated severe wilting;
  • permanently waterlogged soil; and
  • leaving containers sitting in water.

Container-grown chives may need more frequent watering during hot weather.

Feeding

Chives perform well in fertile soil containing organic matter.

Incorporate mature compost or another suitable soil amendment before planting where required.

Established container plants can be fed periodically during active growth, particularly after repeated harvesting.

Harvesting

Begin useful harvesting from approximately:

60–90 days after sowing

Cut healthy leaves close to the base using clean scissors.

Avoid removing all foliage at once. Allow fresh leaves to develop before another heavy harvest.

Regular cutting encourages tender replacement growth.

Flowers

Mature Onion Chives produce rounded purple to mauve flower heads.

The flowers are edible when clean and suitable for culinary use.

Individual florets can be used in salads, egg dishes, potatoes, soups, dips and savoury garnishes.

If leaf production is the priority, remove flower stems as they develop.

Growing Onion Chives in Pots

Onion Chives are particularly well suited to containers.

Use a pot approximately:

20–30cm wide or larger

with:

  • good drainage holes;
  • quality potting mix;
  • full sun to partial shade; and
  • regular watering.

Several seedlings can be grown together to create one productive clump.

Dividing Established Clumps

Older plants can eventually become crowded.

Every few years, lift established clumps, separate them into healthy sections and replant with adequate spacing.

This helps rejuvenate the plants and provides additional chive clumps.

Onion Chives vs Garlic Chives

Onion Chives have slender hollow leaves and a mild sweet onion flavour.

For flatter leaves and a stronger garlic-onion character, see Garlic Chive Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Fresh Onion Chives are best harvested close to when they will be used.

Keep cut leaves cool and avoid crushing the hollow foliage.

Chives can also be finely chopped and frozen. Drying is possible, but fresh or frozen chives generally retain more of their characteristic flavour.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
