Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Please do not attend the warehouse without an appointment. All pickups are strictly by prior arrangement.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Daikon Radish Sprouting Seeds

Australian-grown daikon radish seeds for peppery sprouts, fast microgreens, crisp daikon roots and cover-crop growing. Versatile seed for home growers and bulk plantings across Australia.

Description

Daikon Radish Sprouting Seeds for Spicy, Crunchy Sprouts

Grow crisp, peppery sprouts at home with our daikon radish sprouting seeds. Daikon germinates quickly and produces crunchy pale stems with fresh green leaves and the distinctive spicy flavour associated with radish. It is well suited to indoor jar sprouting and is generally ready to harvest in approximately 3–6 days.

Regular rinsing, thorough drainage and good airflow are the main requirements for reliable results, making daikon a straightforward choice for both new and experienced home sprouters.

Fresh, Peppery Daikon Radish Sprouts

Daikon sprouts have a crisp texture and fresh peppery bite that works particularly well in salads, sandwiches, wraps, rice bowls and savoury garnishes.

Their stronger flavour also makes them useful in sprout blends. Combine harvested daikon sprouts with milder varieties such as Broccoli Sprouting Seeds to balance the radish heat with a milder brassica flavour.

Designed for Jar-Grown Daikon Sprouts

This product page is specifically focused on growing short daikon sprouts in a jar or suitable sprouter. The seeds are soaked first, then rinsed and thoroughly drained several times each day until crisp young shoots have developed.

Once the cotyledons begin to open, brief exposure to bright indirect light can encourage greener leaves before harvest.

Daikon Sprouts vs Daikon Microgreens

The same type of seed can also be grown for longer in trays, but the method is different. Daikon microgreens are sown onto a growing medium without pre-soaking and harvested later as larger leafy shoots.

If you want to grow tray-grown radish greens, see Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds for the dedicated microgreen product and growing method.

Grow Mature Daikon Radishes

Viable daikon seed can also be planted outdoors and grown through to maturity to produce the familiar long white radish root. Mature daikon has a crisp texture and mild peppery flavour and can be eaten raw, grated, pickled, fermented or cooked.

The leaves are also edible and can be harvested as a leafy vegetable where suitable.

Daikon for Cover-Crop Growing

Daikon can also be grown as a cover crop or green manure. Its substantial taproot can penetrate the soil and leave channels and organic matter behind as the crop breaks down.

For serious agricultural soil-conditioning applications, purpose-bred tillage radish cultivars may be preferable, but daikon remains a useful option for general garden and cover-crop growing.

How to Grow Daikon Radish Sprouts

Daikon radish is a fast-growing seed that produces crisp sprouts with a fresh, peppery flavour. These instructions are specifically for short jar-grown daikon sprouts rather than tray-grown daikon microgreens.

What You Need

  • Approximately 1.5 tablespoons / 15g of daikon radish seed
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or draining screen
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 1.5 tablespoons / around 15g of daikon radish seed to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged or deteriorated seeds.
  3. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the seed with cool drinking-quality water.
  4. Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 6–8 hours.
  5. Drain completely: Discard the soaking water, rinse again and drain thoroughly.
  6. Position for airflow: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess moisture can escape and air can circulate.
  7. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain approximately 2–3 times each day. Do not leave the sprouts sitting in pooled water.
  8. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. A growing temperature of approximately 15–29°C is suitable.
  9. Green before harvest: Once the seed leaves begin to develop, brief exposure to bright indirect light can encourage greener cotyledons.
  10. Harvest: Daikon radish sprouts are generally ready in approximately 3–6 days, depending on temperature and your preferred sprout length.

Tips for Best Results

  • Avoid overcrowding the jar.
  • Drain thoroughly after every rinse.
  • Maintain good airflow throughout growing.
  • Do not leave standing water around the sprouts.
  • Daikon grows quickly, so check the crop daily.
  • Shorter sprouts generally have a crisp texture and pronounced radish flavour.
  • Bright indirect light near harvest can encourage greener leaves.
  • Daikon's peppery flavour works particularly well when combined after harvest with milder Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds or Broccoli Sprouting Seeds. For a stronger radish flavour and contrasting purple colour, you can also grow Purple Sango Radish Sprouting Seeds separately and combine the finished sprouts after harvest.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop a sour, rotten or unusually musty smell.

Daikon Sprouts vs Microgreens

Jar-grown daikon sprouts and tray-grown daikon microgreens use different growing methods.

For sprouts:

  • Pre-soak the seed.
  • Grow without soil in a jar or sprouter.
  • Rinse and drain several times each day.
  • Harvest at the short sprout stage.

For larger tray-grown greens, use Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds. Daikon microgreens are dry-sown onto a growing medium and harvested later after larger stems and leaves have developed.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

For an easy method of washing the finished crop, removing loose seed hulls and preparing sprouts for refrigeration, see How to Harvest, Wash & Store Sprouts After Growing.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
