Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds

Grow bright green Daikon Radish microgreens with crisp pale stems and a fresh peppery bite. Fast-growing and ideal for salads, sandwiches, wraps, rice bowls, avocado toast, garnishes and colourful microgreen mixes.

Description

Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds for Fast, Peppery Greens

Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds produce fast-growing microgreens with crisp pale stems, bright green leaves and the distinctive fresh, peppery flavour of radish. They are an excellent choice for growers looking for a quick, reliable tray crop with plenty of flavour and a clean green appearance.

These are the same Daikon Radish seeds that can also be grown as sprouts. The difference is how they are grown and harvested. For microgreens, the seeds are sown onto a growing medium, allowed to establish roots, exposed to light and harvested above the growing surface once the bright green cotyledons have developed.

Bright Green Microgreens with a Peppery Bite

Daikon Radish microgreens develop fresh green leaves above crisp white to pale green stems. Their flavour is pleasantly spicy and peppery, delivering the familiar character of radish in a tender young shoot.

Use them fresh in salads, sandwiches, wraps and grain bowls, or add them to avocado toast, eggs, noodles, poke bowls and savoury dishes. Their bright green colour also provides an attractive contrast when mixed with darker varieties such as Purple Radish Microgreen Seeds.

Fast & Easy to Grow in Trays

Daikon Radish is one of the quicker microgreens to produce. The seeds require no pre-soaking when grown in trays, germinate rapidly and can generally be harvested in approximately 7–10 days under suitable conditions.

For a simple growing setup, sow into a fine, well-drained medium such as Coco Fibre Growing Medium. Once established, bright light, good airflow and bottom watering help produce a crisp, healthy green crop.

One Seed, Different Growing Methods

Daikon Radish seed can be grown as microgreens, sprouts or mature radish plants, but each method uses a different growing process and harvest stage. This listing is specifically focused on tray-grown microgreens.

Microgreens are grown on a medium under light and harvested by cutting the stems above the growing surface. Sprouts are germinated using a sprouting method and harvested much earlier, while mature Daikon is grown in soil for its long edible root.

How to Grow Daikon Radish Microgreens

Daikon Radish is a fast-growing microgreen with crisp pale stems, bright green cotyledons and a fresh peppery radish flavour. It requires no pre-soaking and is generally ready to harvest in approximately 7–10 days.

What You Need

  • Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • A second tray or suitable blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

22–28g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the growing surface, aiming for dense coverage without thick piles or heavily overlapping patches.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow Daikon Radish seed dry directly onto the prepared growing medium.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, covers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable growing medium.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread approximately 22–28g of dry seed evenly across the surface.
  5. Gently press the seed into contact with the medium.
  6. Mist lightly with clean drinking-quality water.
  7. Cover with another tray or suitable blackout cover.
  8. Keep covered for approximately 2–3 days.
  9. Remove the cover once most seedlings are rooted and pushing upward.
  10. Move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  11. Maintain good airflow.
  12. Bottom water once the roots are established.
  13. Harvest at approximately 7–10 days while the crop remains crisp and tender.

Blackout

Keep the tray covered for approximately:

2–3 days

Light tray pressure can help maintain seed-to-medium contact, but heavy weighting is unnecessary.

Remove the cover once the majority of seedlings are established and beginning to push upward.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

2–4 days

Daikon Radish usually germinates quickly under suitable conditions.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Avoid excessive heat combined with stagnant humidity, particularly during the covered germination period.

Light

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

Good light helps produce:

  • bright green cotyledons;
  • compact stems;
  • an even canopy; and
  • strong overall growth.

Watering

During early germination, mist gently if required.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without leaving standing water beneath the tray.

Colour & Crop Characteristics

Daikon Radish develops:

  • vivid green cotyledons;
  • pale white to light green stems;
  • compact upright growth; and
  • a fresh peppery radish flavour.

For a contrasting radish crop with stronger purple colouring, see Purple Radish Microgreen Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

7–10 days from sowing

The crop is generally ready when:

  • cotyledons are fully open;
  • leaves are bright green;
  • stems are pale, crisp and upright;
  • shoots are approximately 5–8cm tall; and
  • the characteristic peppery flavour has developed.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Daikon Radish can produce fine white root hairs that are sometimes mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly around individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between seedlings;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur alongside slime, decay or unpleasant smells.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Growing Daikon to Maturity

Daikon Radish can also be grown as a mature root vegetable.

For mature plants:

  1. Direct sow into loose, well-prepared soil.
  2. Sow approximately 10–15mm deep.
  3. Thin seedlings to approximately 10–15cm apart.
  4. Allow approximately 30–45cm between rows.
  5. Grow in full sun.
  6. Maintain consistent moisture during root development.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow, and discard crops showing mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Daikon Radish seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
