Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Celosia Edible Flower Seeds

Celosia edible flower seeds produce compact plants with vivid, flame-shaped plumes. Grow them in sunny garden beds or containers for colourful edible garnishes, pollinator interest and fresh or dried displays.

Description

Celosia Edible Flower Seeds for Vibrant Flame-Shaped Blooms

Celosia edible flower seeds produce distinctive feathery flower plumes that bring intense colour and texture to edible gardens, flower beds and containers. The upright blooms resemble small flames and develop in a striking mixture of warm reds, oranges, yellows, pink tones and creams.

Young Celosia flowers are edible and have a mild, earthy flavour with subtle spinach-like notes. Their main culinary appeal is their vivid colour and unusual texture, making them particularly useful as decorative garnishes for salads, savoury plates, platters and other presentations.

Edible Young Flowers for Colourful Garnishes

For culinary use, harvest young, clean flower plumes or flower buds while they are still tender. Older flower heads become firmer and more fibrous as they mature and are generally better suited to ornamental or dried-flower use.

Use fresh young blooms to add colour and texture to salads, savoury dishes, platters and decorative garnishes. Harvest close to when they will be used for the best appearance and texture.

Compact Flowers for Pots & Garden Beds

Celosia is a warm-season annual that performs particularly well in full sun. Its compact, upright growth makes it suitable for patio pots, window boxes, garden borders, raised beds and mass plantings where concentrated colour is wanted without tall, sprawling growth.

The flowers are long lasting and can also attract visiting pollinators. Mature plumes can be cut for fresh arrangements or dried for decorative use after they are no longer suitable for culinary harvesting.

More Than an Ornamental Flower

Celosia belongs to the amaranth family and has additional edible uses beyond the flowers. Young leaves, tender shoots and young stems are also eaten as cooked leafy vegetables in several cuisines.

For this OzSprout product, however, the primary focus is growing colourful edible flower plumes for culinary and ornamental use.

Easy to Grow in Warm Conditions

Celosia prefers warm soil, strong light and reliable drainage. The tiny seeds should be sown shallowly at approximately 2–3mm deep and kept evenly moist during germination.

For seed raising, a light covering of Vermiculite Growing Medium can help maintain surface moisture without burying the fine seed too deeply.

Under suitable conditions, germination generally occurs in approximately 7–14 days. Seedlings are sensitive to cold, so outdoor planting should wait until temperatures have warmed and frost risk has passed.

Warm-Season Colour for Australian Gardens

Once established, Celosia handles warm conditions well and performs best with full sun, good airflow and moderate watering.

With suitable care, plants can produce long-lasting flower plumes throughout favourable warm weather, providing a combination of edible flowers, garden colour and decorative stems.

How to Grow Celosia Edible Flowers

For the most reliable establishment, start Celosia in trays, cells or small pots before transplanting. Direct sowing is also possible once the soil has warmed and all frost risk has passed.

Sowing Method

To raise seedlings:

  1. Fill trays, cells or small pots with a fine, free-draining seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
  3. Scatter or place the tiny seeds carefully across the surface.
  4. Cover very lightly with fine seed-raising mix or vermiculite.
  5. Mist gently or bottom-water so the seed is not displaced.
  6. Keep the growing medium consistently moist without saturating it.
  7. Maintain warm conditions during germination.
  8. Provide good light.
  9. Once seedlings emerge, maintain strong light and good airflow.
  10. Transplant while seedlings are actively growing and before they become crowded or root-bound.

Handle young seedlings carefully during transplanting because their developing roots can be sensitive to disturbance.

Sowing Depth

Sow approximately:

2–3mm deep

Celosia seeds are extremely small and should be only lightly covered.

Do not bury them deeply.

Best Sowing Season

Celosia is a warm-season annual and should be grown when temperatures are reliably warm.

As a practical Australian guide:

  • Cool climates: late spring to early summer
  • Temperate climates: spring through summer
  • Subtropical climates: spring through early autumn
  • Tropical climates: warm periods of the year, favouring less humid conditions where possible
  • Hot or arid climates: spring and early summer, with later sowings possible while warm conditions continue

Do not transplant outdoors while frost remains a risk.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Aim for a germination temperature of approximately:

21–27°C

During germination:

  • Maintain consistent warmth.
  • Keep the growing medium moist but not waterlogged.
  • Do not allow the surface to dry completely.
  • Mist gently or bottom-water.
  • Provide light.
  • Maintain airflow without exposing seedlings to cold draughts.

Plant Spacing

Space established plants approximately:

15–20cm apart

This provides enough room for compact plants to develop while maintaining airflow around the foliage and flower plumes.

Position

Grow Celosia in:

Full sun

Aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Celosia prefers:

  • Warm growing conditions
  • Well-drained soil
  • Moderate fertility
  • Consistent moisture during establishment
  • Good airflow

Insufficient light can produce weaker plants and reduce flowering.

Soil & Drainage

Celosia performs best in fertile but well-drained soil.

Choose soil that is:

  • Loose and workable
  • Moderately fertile
  • Well drained
  • Not permanently saturated

Improve very poor soil with mature compost or another suitable amendment before planting if required.

Avoid locations where water regularly pools after irrigation or rain.

Watering

Keep Celosia evenly moist during establishment.

Once established:

  • Water when the upper soil begins to dry.
  • Water deeply rather than applying frequent tiny amounts.
  • Check container-grown plants regularly during hot weather.
  • Avoid leaving pots standing permanently in water.
  • Direct water towards the root zone where practical.
  • Reduce watering during prolonged wet weather.

Avoid continuously saturated soil.

Feeding

Celosia responds well to moderate fertility but does not require excessive fertiliser.

Before planting, improve depleted soil where necessary with mature compost or another suitable amendment.

Container-grown plants may benefit from periodic light feeding during active growth.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft leafy growth rather than balanced flowering.

Growing Celosia in Pots

Celosia is well suited to container growing.

It can be grown in:

  • Patio pots
  • Window boxes
  • Planter troughs
  • Mixed flower containers
  • Edible garden containers

Choose:

  • A pot approximately 20cm wide or larger
  • Good drainage holes
  • Quality potting mix
  • A full-sun position
  • Reliable access to water

Several plants can be combined in a larger container for a dense display of differently coloured plumes.

Encouraging Strong Flowering

For the best flowering display:

  • Provide full sun.
  • Maintain moderate soil fertility.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Keep plants actively growing during warm weather.
  • Remove damaged foliage.
  • Remove declining flower plumes where required.

Celosia naturally flowers strongly under warm, bright conditions and does not require complicated maintenance.

Removing Spent Flowers

Older plumes can be removed once they fade or begin producing mature seed.

Removing spent flowers can help:

  • maintain a tidy appearance;
  • reduce unwanted self-seeding; and
  • encourage continued flowering where conditions remain favourable.

Use clean scissors or snips to remove old flower stems.

Harvesting Edible Celosia Flowers

For culinary use, harvest young flower plumes or flower buds while they remain tender.

Choose flowers that are:

  • Young
  • Healthy
  • Clean
  • Free from obvious damage
  • Dry rather than wet from irrigation or rain

To harvest:

  1. Use clean scissors or snips.
  2. Cut young flower plumes or buds.
  3. Inspect carefully for insects.
  4. Remove damaged or discoloured material.
  5. Rinse gently in clean water where required.
  6. Use fresh for the best texture.

Young Celosia flowers can be used in:

  • Salads
  • Savoury dishes
  • Platters
  • Decorative garnishes
  • Culinary presentations

Older flower heads become firmer and more fibrous and are better suited to ornamental use.

Other Edible Parts

Young Celosia plants also provide edible:

  • Leaves
  • Tender shoots
  • Young stems

These are generally used as cooked leafy vegetables rather than decorative garnishes.

The primary purpose of this product remains growing edible flowers.

Fresh & Dried Flower Use

For fresh decorative flowers:

  1. Cut stems once the plume is well developed.
  2. Harvest while the foliage and flowers are dry.
  3. Remove lower leaves.
  4. Place stems promptly into clean water.

For dried flowers:

  1. Harvest mature, well-developed plumes before they begin shedding seed.
  2. Remove excess foliage.
  3. Tie stems loosely in small bunches.
  4. Hang upside down in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated location.
  5. Allow the flowers to dry completely.

Food Safety for Edible Flowers

Only consume Celosia that has been correctly identified and intentionally grown for food use.

  • Use clean gardening and harvesting equipment.
  • Do not consume plants treated with chemicals that are not approved for edible crops.
  • Avoid flowers grown beside busy roads or in areas exposed to unknown sprays or contamination.
  • Inspect harvested flowers carefully for insects.
  • Rinse gently with clean water where appropriate.
  • Refrigerate harvested edible flowers promptly.
  • Discard flowers that are slimy, mouldy, badly damaged, discoloured or deteriorating.

Harvest & Storage

Edible Celosia flowers are best harvested close to when they will be used.

For short-term storage:

  1. Harvest clean, dry young flowers.
  2. Remove damaged material.
  3. Place in a clean container.
  4. Refrigerate promptly.
  5. Protect the plumes from crushing.
  6. Avoid storing them while excessively wet.
  7. Use while fresh and visually appealing.
