Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Broccoli Microgreen Seeds

Grow dense, crisp broccoli microgreens in around 8–12 days. Choose New Zealand Calabrese/Bullet or Australian Green Sprouting seed for easy tray growing in home and bulk quantities.

Description

Broccoli Microgreen Seeds for Fast, Reliable Tray Growing

Broccoli Microgreen Seeds produce dense trays of tender green microgreens with bright cotyledons, fine pale stems and a mild, fresh broccoli flavour with a lightly peppery finish.

Broccoli is one of the most straightforward microgreens to grow. The small seed is sown dry without pre-soaking, germinates quickly and can generally be harvested in approximately 8–12 days. This makes it particularly suitable for beginners as well as growers producing trays regularly.

Choose Your Broccoli Microgreen Seed

Type 1 – New Zealand Calabrese/Bullet

A reliable option for tray-grown broccoli microgreens, producing classic bright green shoots with a mild brassica flavour. Choose Type 1 if you want the established New Zealand Calabrese/Bullet seed option for regular home or commercial microgreen production.

Type 2 – Australian Green Sprouting

An Australian-grown alternative suited to the same tray-growing method. Choose Type 2 if Australian origin is important to you while still wanting fast-growing broccoli microgreens with the same general flavour, texture and harvest style.

Both types are suitable for the same microgreen growing method, including dry sowing, short blackout, bottom watering once established and harvest at approximately 8–12 days. The main difference for customers is the seed type and country of origin.

Microgreens Grown Specifically for Tray Harvest

Unlike broccoli sprouts grown in jars, broccoli microgreens are sown densely onto a growing medium, given a short covered germination period and then exposed to light. At harvest, the tender stems and leaves are cut above the growing medium while the roots and seed remnants remain behind.

Broccoli performs well in coco coir, fine seed-raising mix and other suitable microgreen media. A drainable microgreen grow tray makes it easy to manage drainage and switch to bottom watering once the roots are established.

Mild Broccoli Flavour for Everyday Meals

Fresh broccoli microgreens have a clean, mild brassica flavour with a subtle peppery edge and a tender, lightly crisp texture. Their gentle flavour makes them easy to use without overpowering other ingredients.

Add them to salads, sandwiches, wraps, tacos, grain bowls and eggs, or scatter them over soups and savoury dishes immediately before serving. They also combine well after harvest with stronger crops such as Daikon Radish Microgreen Seeds for extra crunch and peppery flavour.

Broccoli Microgreen Seeds for Home & Bulk Growing

OzSprout Broccoli Microgreen Seeds are available from 100g through to 24kg, with pack sizes suited to home growers, regular tray production and commercial microgreen growing.

If you want to grow short jar-grown broccoli sprouts rather than tray-grown microgreens, see the separate Broccoli Sprouting Seeds product and its sprout-specific instructions.

How to Grow Broccoli Microgreens

Broccoli is one of the easiest microgreens to learn because the small seed requires no pre-soaking, germinates quickly and develops into a dense green crop within a relatively short growing cycle.

If this is your first tray, the OzSprout Best Microgreens for Beginners guide explains why broccoli is a good starting crop.

What You Need

  • Broccoli Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow growing tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • A second tray or blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or a suitable grow light
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

28g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the growing surface.

Broccoli is grown densely, but avoid thick overlapping patches. Even distribution helps produce a uniform canopy and reduces pockets of trapped moisture.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soak required.

Broccoli is a small, fast-germinating brassica seed and should normally be sown dry directly onto the prepared growing medium.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the growing tray, lower tray, blackout cover and tools.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be damp throughout without being saturated.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 28g of dry seed for a 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Sow evenly. Broadcast the seed across the surface and break up any thick patches.
  6. Press gently. Lightly press the seed against the growing medium to improve seed-to-medium contact.
  7. Mist if required. Apply a fine mist of clean water without washing the seed into clusters.
  8. Cover the tray. Place another tray or suitable opaque cover over the crop for approximately 2–4 days.
  9. Check moisture daily. Keep the growing medium evenly moist without continually adding water to an already damp tray.
  10. Move into light. Once the seedlings are well rooted and beginning to push upward, remove the cover and place the tray into good natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  11. Maintain airflow. Provide gentle airflow around the developing canopy.
  12. Bottom water once established. Once roots have developed through the growing medium, switch primarily to watering from below.

Blackout

Keep covered for approximately:

2–4 days

A normal blackout cover or second tray is sufficient.

Heavy weighting is generally unnecessary for broccoli.

Remove the cover once:

  • most viable seed has germinated;
  • the roots are anchored into the growing medium; and
  • the seedlings are beginning to push strongly upward.

Freshly uncovered seedlings may appear pale or yellow. This is normal and they should green quickly after exposure to sufficient light.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

2–4 days

Broccoli normally germinates quickly and relatively evenly under suitable conditions.

Maintain consistent moisture without flooding the seed layer.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–24°C

Broccoli grows well under moderate indoor temperatures.

Excessive warmth combined with high humidity, overcrowding and excess moisture can increase crop problems.

Light & Airflow

Once uncovered:

  • provide bright natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain consistent light each day;
  • provide gentle airflow;
  • avoid excessively hot direct sunlight; and
  • prevent established foliage from remaining continually wet.

Good light encourages compact growth, bright green cotyledons and a sturdy canopy.

Watering

During sowing and early germination, mist or gently surface-water when required.

Once roots are established, bottom watering is generally preferable because it directs water towards the root zone while reducing repeated wetting of the foliage.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

When bottom watering:

  • add a shallow amount of water to the lower tray;
  • allow the growing medium to absorb what it needs;
  • check moisture before adding more;
  • avoid leaving the tray permanently standing in deep water; and
  • keep the growing medium moist rather than saturated.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not pre-soak.
  • Use approximately 28g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Spread the seed evenly.
  • Avoid thick overlapping patches.
  • Use approximately 2–4 days of blackout.
  • Do not use heavy weighting.
  • Maintain even moisture during germination.
  • Provide good light after uncovering.
  • Maintain airflow around the canopy.
  • Switch to bottom watering once roots establish.
  • Harvest while the stems and cotyledons remain tender.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Broccoli often develops noticeable fine white root hairs that can be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly around the root zone; and
  • become less obvious after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between seeds, across the growing medium or onto plant tissue and may be associated with slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

If you are unsure, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

Look for:

  • fully opened cotyledons;
  • bright green foliage;
  • upright, tender stems;
  • an even established canopy; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

Broccoli is commonly harvested before or around the time the first true leaves begin to appear.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

The roots, growing medium and remaining seed material should stay in the tray.

For more detailed post-harvest guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate harvested microgreens promptly in a clean container. If washed before storage, drain and dry them thoroughly first.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting tools.

Maintain good drainage and airflow and avoid continuously saturated growing conditions.

At harvest:

  • cut above the growing medium;
  • keep roots and growing medium out of the harvested crop;
  • use clean scissors or a harvesting knife; and
  • refrigerate promptly.

Discard crops showing obvious mould, slime, decay, collapsed seedlings or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening the package to reduce condensation.
