Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Blue Cornflower Edible Flower Seeds

Blue cornflower edible flower seeds produce vivid sapphire-blue blooms with delicately flavoured petals. Ideal for colourful garnishes, cottage gardens, cut flowers and pollinator-friendly planting in sunny garden beds.

Description

Blue Cornflower Edible Flower Seeds for Vivid Culinary Blooms

Blue cornflower edible flower seeds produce striking sapphire-blue blooms on slender upright stems, combining classic cottage-garden colour with genuine culinary use. The distinctive flowers rise above attractive grey-green foliage and create an eye-catching display in edible gardens, borders, raised beds and mixed flower plantings.

The blue petals and florets are edible and have a mild flavour with subtle sweet, spicy and clove-like notes. Their main culinary appeal is their intense natural colour, making them particularly useful when a dish needs a decorative finishing touch without a strongly perfumed floral taste.

Edible Blue Petals for Garnishes & Drinks

Fresh cornflower petals can be scattered over salads, cakes, desserts, cheese boards, canapés and savoury dishes. They can also be used to decorate cocktails, mocktails and other drinks, or frozen into ice cubes for colourful presentation.

For culinary use, separate the blue petals and florets from the tougher lower flower structure before serving.

Excellent for Fresh & Dried Culinary Use

Cornflower petals retain their vivid blue colour particularly well when properly dried, making them useful in tea blends, baking decorations, edible flower mixes and dessert garnishes.

Harvest clean, healthy flowers while they are dry, remove the edible petals and dry them thoroughly in a shaded, well-ventilated location before storage.

Cottage Garden Flowers for Cutting & Pollinators

Cornflowers develop an upright, branching habit with slender stems that also make them useful as fresh cut flowers. Mature blooms can be dried for decorative arrangements while retaining much of their distinctive colour.

The flowers attract bees, butterflies and other visiting pollinators, making cornflowers a useful addition around vegetable gardens, herb beds and other flowering plants.

Easy to Grow from Seed

Cornflowers are particularly well suited to direct sowing where they are to flower. The seeds should be planted approximately 3–5mm deep in well-drained soil and kept evenly moist during germination.

For seedling trays or container growing, a suitable seed-raising mix can be amended with Vermiculite Growing Medium where additional moisture retention is useful.

Under suitable conditions, germination generally occurs in approximately 7–14 days. Once established, plants prefer plenty of sunlight, moderate fertility, good airflow and reliable drainage.

Best Grown in Mild Conditions

Cornflowers favour cool to mild growing conditions and generally perform best when established outside periods of extreme summer heat.

Regular harvesting and deadheading can help extend flowering. If you would like plants to self-seed naturally, allow selected flower heads to mature and dry towards the end of the flowering period.

How to Grow Blue Cornflower Edible Flowers

Cornflowers are particularly well suited to direct sowing where they are to flower, although they can also be raised in trays, cells or small pots before transplanting.

Sowing Method

Direct sowing is often preferred because cornflowers develop a taproot and establish well when left relatively undisturbed.

To direct sow:

  1. Prepare a fine, weed-free seedbed.
  2. Water the soil before sowing if it is dry.
  3. Sow seeds approximately 3–5mm deep.
  4. Cover lightly with fine soil.
  5. Water gently so the seeds remain in place.
  6. Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination.
  7. Thin seedlings once established.
  8. Maintain approximately 20–30cm between mature plants.

To raise seedlings:

  1. Fill trays, cells or small pots with quality seed-raising mix.
  2. Moisten the mix before sowing.
  3. Sow seeds approximately 3–5mm deep.
  4. Cover lightly with seed-raising mix.
  5. Water gently.
  6. Keep consistently moist without waterlogging.
  7. Provide good light once seedlings emerge.
  8. Transplant while seedlings are young and actively growing.
  9. Avoid leaving plants crowded in small cells for extended periods.

Sowing Depth

Sow approximately:

3–5mm deep

Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil or seed-raising mix.

Avoid planting excessively deeply, as this can slow or reduce emergence.

Best Sowing Season

Cornflowers favour cool to mild conditions.

As a practical Australian guide:

  • Cool climates: early spring, with autumn sowing also possible where winters are not excessively severe
  • Temperate climates: late summer through autumn and again in early spring
  • Subtropical climates: autumn to early winter
  • Tropical climates: cooler, drier season
  • Hot or arid climates: autumn through early spring, avoiding extreme summer heat

Autumn sowings in suitable climates can establish through cooler weather and flower strongly in spring.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

7–14 days

Aim for a germination temperature of approximately:

18–21°C

During germination:

  • Maintain even moisture.
  • Do not allow the seedbed to dry completely.
  • Avoid saturated soil.
  • Keep trays or garden beds well ventilated.
  • Provide good light after emergence.

Plant Spacing

Space established plants approximately:

20–30cm apart

Closer spacing can create a denser cottage-garden effect, while wider spacing can improve airflow and stem development.

Position

Grow cornflowers in:

Full sun to light partial shade

For the strongest stems and heaviest flowering, full sun is preferred.

Cornflowers grow best with:

  • Plenty of direct sunlight
  • Well-drained soil
  • Moderate fertility
  • Good airflow
  • Regular moisture during establishment

Plants grown in excessive shade may become taller and weaker.

Soil & Drainage

Cornflowers are adaptable and do not require extremely rich soil.

Choose soil that is:

  • Well drained
  • Loose and workable
  • Moderately fertile
  • Not permanently waterlogged

They are suitable for:

  • Garden beds
  • Raised beds
  • Cottage gardens
  • Wildflower-style plantings
  • Edible flower gardens
  • Large containers

Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can encourage soft, overly lush growth.

Watering

Keep young plants consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Once established:

  • Water deeply when required.
  • Allow excess water to drain freely.
  • Increase watering during extended dry or windy conditions.
  • Check container-grown plants more frequently.
  • Avoid maintaining permanently saturated soil.

Feeding

Cornflowers generally perform well without heavy feeding.

In reasonably fertile garden soil, additional fertiliser may not be necessary.

If soil is poor, incorporate mature compost or another suitable amendment before planting.

Container-grown plants may benefit from occasional light feeding during active growth.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage tall, soft growth.

Growing Cornflowers in Pots

Cornflowers can be grown successfully in containers.

Choose:

  • A pot approximately 25–30cm wide or larger
  • A reasonably deep container
  • Good drainage holes
  • Quality potting mix
  • A sunny position

Larger containers are preferable when growing several plants together.

Supporting Tall Plants

Cornflowers develop slender upright stems and may lean in exposed or windy locations.

To help maintain upright growth:

  • Grow plants in groups so neighbouring stems provide some support.
  • Choose a position protected from severe wind.
  • Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser.
  • Use discreet stakes where required.
  • Provide plenty of sunlight to encourage stronger stems.

Encouraging More Flowers

Regular harvesting and deadheading can extend flowering.

To encourage continued blooms:

  1. Harvest fresh flowers regularly.
  2. Remove fading flower heads before mature seed develops.
  3. Cut flower stems back to a healthy branching point.
  4. Maintain moisture during prolonged dry conditions.
  5. Remove damaged or declining growth.

If you want natural self-seeding, leave selected healthy flowers on the plant towards the end of the flowering period.

Harvesting Edible Cornflower Petals

For culinary use, harvest the colourful petals and florets rather than eating the entire flower head.

Harvest flowers when they are:

  • Fully opened
  • Freshly coloured
  • Free from obvious damage
  • Dry rather than wet from rain or irrigation

To prepare:

  1. Harvest flowers with clean scissors or snips.
  2. Inspect each bloom for insects.
  3. Gently remove the blue petals and florets from the lower flower head.
  4. Discard the tougher base.
  5. Use the petals fresh or prepare them for drying.

Fresh petals can be used with:

  • Salads
  • Cakes
  • Desserts
  • Cheese boards
  • Canapés
  • Savoury dishes
  • Drinks
  • Cocktails and mocktails
  • Decorative ice cubes

Drying Cornflower Petals

To dry the petals:

  1. Harvest healthy flowers while they are dry.
  2. Remove the edible petals from the lower flower head.
  3. Spread them loosely in a single layer.
  4. Place them in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated location.
  5. Allow them to dry completely.
  6. Transfer only fully dried petals to storage.

Dried petals can be used in:

  • Tea blends
  • Baking decorations
  • Edible flower mixes
  • Dessert garnishes
  • Decorative culinary presentations

Store dried petals away from heat, moisture and strong light.

Fresh & Dried Cut Flowers

For fresh arrangements:

  1. Harvest stems when flowers are freshly opened.
  2. Use clean snips.
  3. Remove foliage that would sit below the water line.
  4. Place stems promptly into clean water.

For dried arrangements:

  1. Cut healthy stems.
  2. Gather into small loose bunches.
  3. Hang upside down in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated area.
  4. Allow them to dry completely.

Food Safety for Edible Flowers

Only consume cornflowers that have been correctly identified and intentionally grown for edible use.

  • Use clean gardening and harvesting equipment.
  • Do not consume flowers treated with chemicals that are not approved for edible crops.
  • Avoid flowers from roadsides or areas exposed to unknown sprays or contamination.
  • Inspect flowers carefully for insects.
  • Rinse gently with clean water where appropriate.
  • Use the edible petals and florets rather than the tougher lower flower head.
  • Discard flowers showing mould, slime, severe discolouration or deterioration.

Harvest & Storage

Fresh cornflower petals are best harvested close to when they will be used.

For short-term storage:

  1. Harvest clean, dry flowers.
  2. Separate the edible petals if desired.
  3. Remove damaged material.
  4. Place in a clean container.
  5. Refrigerate promptly.
  6. Protect delicate petals from crushing.
  7. Avoid storing them while excessively wet.

For longer storage, dry the petals thoroughly before sealing them in a clean container away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
