Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Black Sunflower Microgreen & Sprouting Seeds

Grow crisp, nutty sunflower microgreens with Australian-grown black sunflower seed. Ideal for tray growing, short sprouts and mature sunflowers, with bulk sizes available across Australia.

Description

Australian Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds for Thick, Crunchy Shoots

Grow substantial, crunchy greens with our Australian-grown Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds. Sunflower produces thick, crisp stems, broad green cotyledons and a mild, fresh and slightly sweet nutty flavour.

Sunflower is one of the larger and more substantial microgreens, making it particularly useful in salads, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, grain bowls and fresh savoury dishes where you want plenty of texture and crunch.

Grow Crisp, Nutty Sunflower Microgreens

Black sunflower is best grown as a tray-grown microgreen crop. Unlike small seeds such as broccoli, mustard and radish, sunflower benefits from pre-soaking before sowing and light-to-moderate pressure during early germination.

Once the roots are established, remove the weighted cover and provide bright light and good airflow. The broad green cotyledons develop quickly, and the crop is generally ready to harvest in approximately 8–12 days.

A drainable Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray is well suited to sunflower because the crop develops a substantial root system and benefits from effective drainage and bottom watering once established.

Why Sunflower Benefits from Weighted Germination

As the large sunflower seed germinates, the emerging root can push the seed upwards rather than anchoring firmly into the growing medium. Placing a second tray over the seed with light-to-moderate weight helps maintain seed-to-medium contact and encourages stronger, more even rooting.

The weight should provide gentle resistance rather than crushing the crop. Once the seedlings are strongly rooted and beginning to lift the upper tray, the weight can be removed.

Harvest Sunflower While Young & Tender

Harvest sunflower microgreens when the broad cotyledons are fully open, the stems are thick and crisp and most loose seed hulls have fallen away. For the best eating quality, harvest before the first true leaves become large or coarse.

Some black seed hulls may remain attached to the leaves. Allowing the cotyledons to expand, maintaining appropriate moisture and lightly misting stubborn hulls can help them loosen before harvest.

Looking for Sunflower Seeds for Jar Sprouting?

Black sunflower is primarily offered by OzSprout for tray-grown microgreens. If your main goal is to grow short sunflower sprouts in a jar rather than leafy sunflower shoots, choose Organic Grey Striped Sunflower Sprouting Seeds, which has a dedicated jar-sprouting method.

Grow Mature Sunflowers

The viable Black Sunflower seed can also be planted outdoors and grown beyond the microgreen stage into mature sunflower plants under suitable conditions.

Mature sunflowers produce flowers that can attract bees and other pollinators, while mature seed heads may also provide food for seed-eating birds.

Home & Bulk Australian Black Sunflower Seeds

How to Grow Black Sunflower Microgreens

Black sunflower produces thick, crunchy microgreens with broad green leaves and a mild, slightly sweet nutty flavour. The large seed needs pre-soaking and benefits from weighted germination before the crop is moved into light.

For a more detailed explanation of the crop, see OzSprout's How to Grow Sunflower Microgreens at Home guide.

What You Need

  • Black Sunflower Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow grow tray with drainage
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • A second tray for weighted germination
  • Approximately 2–4cm of suitable growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A modest flat weight
  • Bright natural light or a suitable grow light
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

100–140g of dry Black Sunflower seed

For your first crop, starting towards the lower end of the range can make moisture, airflow and seed-hull management easier.

For different tray sizes, adjust the quantity so the soaked seed forms a dense, reasonably even layer without being piled several seeds deep.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Thoroughly clean the grow tray, lower tray, soaking container, upper tray and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Use approximately 100–140g of dry seed per standard 25 × 50cm tray.
  3. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the sunflower seed several times using clean drinking-quality water.
  4. Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 8 hours.
  5. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse the seed again and allow it to drain well before sowing.
  6. Prepare the tray: Add approximately 2–4cm of moist growing medium and level the surface without heavily compacting it.
  7. Sow evenly: Spread the soaked seed densely across the surface in a reasonably even layer. Avoid thick piles of overlapping seed.
  8. Apply gentle pressure: Place a clean second tray directly over the seed and add a modest, evenly distributed weight.
  9. Weighted blackout: Keep the crop covered under light-to-moderate pressure for approximately 3–4 days, checking moisture and establishment each day.
  10. Remove the weight: Once the roots are well established and the seedlings are beginning to lift the upper tray, remove the weight and cover.
  11. Move into light: Place the crop in bright indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.
  12. Remove loose hulls: Allow the cotyledons to expand and gently brush away seed hulls that loosen naturally.
  13. Bottom-water: Once the root system is established, provide most water from the lower tray rather than continually wetting the foliage.
  14. Maintain temperature: Aim for approximately 18–24°C.
  15. Maintain airflow: Avoid hot, stagnant or excessively humid growing conditions.
  16. Harvest: Cut the stems just above the growing medium at approximately 8–12 days, while the cotyledons are broad and green and before the true leaves become large or coarse.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use approximately 100–140g per standard 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Soak for around 8 hours rather than leaving the seed submerged overnight for an unnecessarily long period.
  • Avoid sowing several layers of seed on top of each other.
  • Weighted germination should provide resistance, not heavy compression.
  • Check the crop daily during weighted blackout rather than relying only on the calendar.
  • Keep the medium moist but not saturated.
  • Switch to bottom watering after the roots are established.
  • Maintain good airflow around the dense sunflower canopy.
  • Do not leave the lower tray continuously full of deep water.
  • Some black hulls remaining on young leaves are normal.
  • Lightly mist stubborn hulls and allow them time to soften before gently removing them.
  • Harvest before the first true leaves become large or coarse.
  • Discard crops showing obvious mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

Why Use Weight During Germination?

Sunflower roots are strong enough to push the large seed upwards as they emerge.

Light-to-moderate pressure helps:

  • Keep the seed in contact with the growing medium
  • Encourage roots to grow downwards
  • Improve crop establishment
  • Produce a more even stand
  • Help loosen some seed hulls

Remove the weight once the crop has established firmly and is pushing upwards.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest with clean scissors or a clean sharp knife, cutting the stems just above the growing medium.

Avoid cutting soil, coco fibre or root material into the harvested crop.

Refrigerate harvested sunflower microgreens promptly in a clean food-safe container.

Keep them as dry as practical during storage and use while the stems remain crisp and the leaves fresh.

Clean Growing & Food Safety

Use clean trays, equipment and drinking-quality water.

Start with clean growing medium and maintain good drainage and airflow throughout the crop.

Avoid waterlogged conditions and continuously wet foliage.

Discard the entire affected portion or crop if you observe obvious mould, slime, decay, collapsing seedlings or an unpleasant smell.

Growing Mature Sunflowers

The same viable seed can also be planted outdoors and grown towards maturity.

Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and allow adequate spacing as the plants develop.

Plant height, flowering time and mature seed-head size will depend on growing conditions and the characteristics of the seed variety.

Storage

Store unused sunflower seed tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns towards room temperature before opening the container to help reduce condensation.

R
Ross Cotton Sunkist Micro-herbs & Sprouts

I have a good following for Sunflower Sprouts they take an extra 2 days to sprout to the size we prefer and they are a lot harder to hull but well worth it
Strike rate is pretty good I have also grown them as a Micro on a Felt base with an excellent strike rate. I have had a retail customer say they are the best Sunflowers he has ever had, so that encouraging worth the extra effort. Air flow is critical.
