Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Sweet Green Basil Herb Seeds

Sweet Green Basil Herb Seeds grow into compact, aromatic plants with lush mid-green leaves and a mild, sweet basil flavour. Ideal for pesto, pasta, pizza, salads, sauces and fresh kitchen harvesting from garden beds or containers.

Description

Sweet Green Basil Herb Seeds for Fresh Kitchen Gardens

Sweet Green Basil Herb Seeds grow into aromatic, leafy plants with attractive mid-green foliage and a mild, distinctly sweet basil flavour. This productive warm-season herb is an excellent choice for vegetable gardens, raised beds, balcony pots and containers kept close to the kitchen.

The tender leaves have the familiar fragrance of sweet basil with a soft, sweet character and subtle clove and anise notes. Pick fresh leaves for pesto, pasta, pizza, tomato dishes, salads, sandwiches, dressings and sauces, or use whole leaves as an aromatic finishing herb.

Compact, Productive Basil for Pots & Garden Beds

Plants typically grow to approximately 50cm tall, developing a bushier habit when regularly harvested and pinched. Their moderate size makes this basil particularly practical for containers while still producing plenty of fresh leaves when grown in fertile garden soil.

Basil thrives during warm weather. Sow after frost has passed into a sunny position with fertile, freely draining soil and maintain consistent moisture throughout active growth. Seeds can be direct sown or raised in trays before transplanting.

Compare Other Basil Varieties

For a larger-leaved sweet basil particularly well suited to pesto and Mediterranean cooking, see our Large Leaf Sweet Basil Herb Seeds.

For a more distinctive basil with pronounced anise and liquorice notes suited to Thai, Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian dishes, see our Thai Basil Herb Seeds.

Regular Harvests Through the Warm Season

Begin picking leaves once plants are well established. Harvest young stems just above a pair of leaves to encourage new side shoots and a fuller, more productive plant.

If your priority is continuous leaf production, pinch out developing flower buds as they appear. Regular harvesting helps maintain a steady supply of tender aromatic foliage through suitable warm conditions.

Classic Sweet Basil Flavour

Fresh leaves can be used immediately or preserved for later use. For the strongest fresh aroma, add basil towards the end of cooking or use it uncooked in pesto, salads, tomato dishes and garnishes.

How to Grow Sweet Green Basil

Sweet Green Basil is a frost-tender annual herb that grows best in warm conditions, full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Regular harvesting encourages bushy growth and a steady supply of fresh aromatic leaves.

Quick Start

  • Sowing season: Spring to summer after frost
  • Sowing depth: 2–5mm
  • Germination: 5–10 days
  • Germination temperature: 20–30°C
  • Plant spacing: approximately 30cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Mature height: approximately 50cm
  • Maturity: approximately 60–80 days
  • Harvest: begin light picking once plants are well established

Sowing

Sweet Green Basil can be direct sown or raised as seedlings.

For direct sowing:

  1. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil.
  2. Wait until frost risk has passed and conditions are warm.
  3. Sow approximately 2–5mm deep.
  4. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
  5. Thin seedlings once established.

For seedling raising:

  1. Fill trays or small pots with fine seed-raising mix.
  2. Sow approximately 2–5mm deep.
  3. Keep warm and consistently moist.
  4. Provide bright light after germination.
  5. Transplant once seedlings are established and outdoor conditions are reliably warm.

When to Sow

For most Australian climates, sow:

Spring through summer

General guidance:

  • Cool climates: spring to early summer
  • Temperate climates: spring through summer
  • Subtropical climates: late winter through summer where frost risk is low
  • Tropical and frost-free climates: a broader sowing window is possible, avoiding periods of excessive heat or prolonged wet-season humidity where necessary

Basil dislikes cold soil and frost.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

5–10 days

Aim for approximately:

20–30°C

Warm conditions promote reliable establishment. Avoid cold, saturated growing media.

Position & Spacing

Grow in:

Full sun

Aim for around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily where practical.

Allow approximately:

30cm between plants

If planting rows, allow around 30–45cm between rows.

In very hot conditions, light afternoon protection can help reduce stress, particularly for plants growing in containers.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

For garden-grown basil:

  • water deeply when the upper soil begins to dry;
  • direct water towards the root zone;
  • avoid repeatedly wetting the foliage;
  • use mulch where useful to reduce moisture loss.

For containers:

  • check moisture more frequently during hot weather;
  • water thoroughly when required;
  • ensure excess water drains freely;
  • do not allow pots to sit permanently in water.

Repeated severe wilting can slow growth and encourage premature flowering.

Feeding

Basil benefits from reasonably fertile soil.

Incorporate mature compost or another suitable soil amendment before planting where required.

Container-grown plants can be fed periodically during active growth according to the fertiliser manufacturer's directions.

Pinching & Harvesting

Once plants have several established sets of leaves:

  1. Find a healthy pair of leaves.
  2. Cut or pinch the stem just above that pair.
  3. Allow the side shoots below the cut to develop.
  4. Repeat regularly as the plant grows.

This encourages branching and a fuller plant.

Begin light harvesting once plants are well established rather than waiting for full maturity.

Managing Flowers

If leaf production is your priority, remove developing flower spikes before flowering becomes extensive.

Leave some flowers if you want blooms for pollinators or intend to save seed.

Growing Sweet Basil in Pots

Sweet Green Basil is well suited to containers.

For one well-developed plant, use a pot approximately 20–30cm wide or larger with:

  • good drainage holes;
  • quality potting mix;
  • a sunny position; and
  • regular watering.

Container-grown basil may need more frequent watering than plants in garden beds.

Succession Sowing

For a longer supply of fresh basil, sow smaller batches approximately every:

3–4 weeks

during suitable warm weather.

Other Basil Varieties

For broader leaves and classic pesto use, see Large Leaf Sweet Basil Herb Seeds.

For sweet anise and liquorice notes suited to Asian cooking, see Thai Basil Herb Seeds.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest healthy young leaves and stems as required.

Fresh basil is best used soon after picking.

Avoid prolonged storage at very low temperatures because basil foliage can darken and suffer chilling injury.

For longer storage, basil can also be frozen, dried or incorporated into pesto and sauces.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
