Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Please do not attend the warehouse without an appointment. All pickups are strictly by prior arrangement.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Red Clover Sprouting Seeds

Grow mild, crisp red clover sprouts in 4–6 days with red clover sprouting seeds for easy home growing and sprout mixes. Bulk sizes available across Australia.

Description

Red Clover Sprouting Seeds for Mild, Crisp Home-Grown Sprouts

Grow fresh, delicate sprouts at home with our red clover sprouting seeds. Red clover produces slender pale stems and fresh green leaves with a mild, slightly nutty flavour similar to alfalfa. It is easy to grow indoors using a Glass Sprouting Jar or another suitable sprouter and is generally ready to harvest in approximately 4–6 days.

Its mild flavour, delicate crunch and straightforward jar-growing method make red clover a good choice for beginners as well as customers who grow sprouts regularly.

A Mild Alternative to Alfalfa Sprouts

Red clover sprouts have a light, clean flavour that works particularly well in sandwiches, wraps, salads, grain bowls and savoury garnishes. Their delicate texture provides fresh crunch without the stronger flavour of crops such as radish, mustard or fenugreek.

If you enjoy mild leafy sprouts, Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds are a closely related option with a similarly delicate flavour and texture.

Create Your Own Sprout Mix

Red clover can be combined with other compatible small-seeded sprouting varieties to create homemade blends with different flavours and textures. Pair it with mild alfalfa or add Broccoli Sprouting Seeds for a slightly more pronounced fresh, peppery flavour.

When combining different seeds, begin with a small test batch and account for any differences in soaking time and growth rate. Seeds can also be sprouted separately and combined after harvest for greater control over each crop.

Primarily for Jar-Grown Red Clover Sprouts

This listing is specifically focused on growing red clover sprouts in a jar or sprouter, using a short soak followed by regular rinsing and thorough drainage.

The same viable seed can also be grown in trays for young clover greens or planted through to maturity, but those growing methods differ from the jar-sprouting instructions provided here.

Red Clover for Garden & Cover-Crop Growing

Red clover can also be grown beyond the edible sprout stage as a mature legume. It is commonly used for cover cropping, green manure, ground cover and forage, and mature plants develop distinctive pink-red flowers that attract pollinating insects.

For this OzSprout product, however, the primary focus is fresh edible red clover sprouts grown indoors.

Home & Bulk Red Clover Sprouting Seeds

OzSprout red clover sprouting seeds are available from 250g through to 24kg bulk quantities, making them suitable for home sprouters, regular growers, retailers, resellers and larger-volume users.

How to Grow Red Clover Sprouts

Red clover is a small, fast-growing seed that is sprouted in much the same way as alfalfa. Regular rinsing, thorough drainage and adequate airflow help produce crisp, evenly developed sprouts.

A Glass Sprouting Jar works well for red clover. If you are new to the process, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for the general jar-sprouting method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 1 tablespoon of red clover sprouting seed for a 500ml jar
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and any utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 1 tablespoon of dry red clover seed to a 500ml sprouting jar. Avoid overcrowding because the small seeds produce a substantial volume of sprouts.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse thoroughly, then cover generously with clean drinking-quality water. Soak for approximately 4–6 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse again and allow the seed to drain completely. Position the jar at an angle with the opening facing downward so excess water can escape.
  5. Rinse regularly: Rinse and drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times each day. Always drain thoroughly after every rinse.
  6. Allow the sprouts to develop: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated location away from hot direct sunlight. A growing temperature of approximately 18–22°C is suitable.
  7. Green before harvest: Once the seed leaves begin to develop, give the sprouts some bright indirect light if you prefer greener leaves. Avoid excessive heat or prolonged direct sunlight.
  8. Harvest: Red clover sprouts are generally ready after approximately 4–6 days. Harvest when they are crisp, leafy and have reached your preferred size.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not overcrowd the jar.
  • Keep the jar tilted between rinses for continued drainage.
  • Do not leave the sprouts sitting in pooled water.
  • Maintain good airflow throughout the growing period.
  • Fine white root hairs may develop around healthy roots and can sometimes be mistaken for mould.
  • If you are unsure what you are seeing, refer to Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious decay or develop a sour, rotten or strongly musty smell.

Mixing Red Clover with Other Sprouts

Red clover works particularly well with mild Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds and slightly stronger Broccoli Sprouting Seeds.

When growing a mixed batch, make sure the varieties have compatible soaking and harvest requirements. Alternatively, grow them separately and combine the finished sprouts after harvest.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

To remove loose seed hulls, place the sprouts in a bowl of cool drinking-quality water and gently move them around. Many of the empty hulls will float towards the surface where they can be skimmed away. See How to Harvest, Wash & Store Sprouts After Growing for the complete washing, hull-removal, draining and storage method.

Drain the sprouts thoroughly, then transfer them to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly. Use them while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria, and careful home-growing practices cannot guarantee that sprouts will be bacteria-free.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
